As A Nurse, These 7 Health Mistakes I See Nigerians Make Too Often by nkirukaloveth(op): 2:18am On May 28
I am writing this not to scare anyone, but because many health problems we battle today could have been prevented with early awareness.

As a Nurse, there are some mistakes I keep seeing people make over and over again.

1. Ignoring symptoms for too long
Many people wait until a sickness becomes unbearable before seeking help. That persistent headache, unusual bleeding, constant weakness, or repeated fever should not always be ignored.

2. Self-medication without proper guidance
Because “someone used it and got better,” many people take random medications. Sometimes symptoms may reduce while the actual problem continues underneath.

3. Not drinking enough water
You’ll be surprised how many people function daily while severely dehydrated. Water affects energy, skin, concentration, digestion, and even headaches.

4. Poor sleep habits
Sleeping at 2–3am daily and expecting your body to cooperate forever is risky. Rest is not laziness; your body repairs during sleep.

5. Ignoring preventive checkups
Many illnesses are easier and cheaper to handle when discovered early.

6. Normalizing stress
Everything cannot be “I’m managing.” Constant stress affects both mind and body.

7. Waiting for sickness before caring for health
Health is not only about treatment. Prevention matters too.

Health problems don’t always start loudly.

Sometimes your body whispers before it screams.

What health mistake do you think Nigerians make the most?

Let’s discuss.

As with most things in Nigeria, I think the number one health mistake is not having money - or health insurance.

But another very important point - the body is designed to heal itself. If you keep running to doctors they'd keep finding and treating issues that'd have cleared by themselves - or that were never there in any meaningful way in the first place. Our past generations survived without constantly running to doctors.

I'm really guilty of the poor sleep habits. I sleep late and wake up early. My body is so used to the system that I don't need an alarm to wake up. I only sleep early when I'm weak or about to fall sick.

On the days that I want to sleep for long hours like public holidays or some weekends, it's really tough.

Trust me, I've tried sleep techniques, apps to improve sleep quality and the likes.
On the flipside, I've succeeded in maintaining sleep on Sunday afternoons, no matter how short it is.

Self medication is the most risky. But most times, it's not our fault. Hospital bills are way too high thereby making poor man to resort to self-help.

Good writeup but you see that number 2, it's going to be hard for people to stop most especially cos many people cannot even afford to consult a general practitioner talk more of a specialist. Many people are scared of the bill they might incur just by walking into a health facility. The worst part is nurses and pharmacists are now engaging in so much quack practices. especially as they are closer to the community than doctors. Even doctors have followed suit cos they want to make money for their respective health facilities. I went to a facility in Lagos where I saw a GP prescribing azithromycin, amoxicillin and metronidazole for peptic ulcer. Luckily for him, he was on leave the next day. I don't know where this country is headed honestly.

You are right but you have to live a healthy lifestyle and also still have to do routine medical checkups even if it is once a year or in 2 years or so. Why? Because our past generations did not use the kind of technological advancement we currently have which have their pros and cons. For instance Air conditioners, use of high powered phones, automobiles with their exhaust pipes, those who have industries close to their homes, etc. our daily activities now inculcates potential hazards with them requiring both preventive measures and also need to detect ailments early before disaster.

Of course, goes without saying: diet, sunshine, exercise, sleep, no stress, sex, etc But bryond those don't forget you cam also catch infection at doctor's and they can also misdiagnose you, mistakenly treat you, or treat find and start treating something benign
