Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has denied allegations that he accepted money from African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, to mobilize support during the party’s recent primary election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday night, Lawal dismissed claims that he kept mobilization funds to himself, which critics alleged led to Hayatu-Deen’s defeat.

In the interview, Lawal boasted that if he needed money he could phone President Bola Tinubu immediately.

“If I want money to do politics, I’d phone Bola Tinubu here, and I am sure before I get home, they’d give me the money. Hayatu-Deen has no money to give now,” Lawal said.

There has been a growing dispute between Lawal and Atiku Abubakar in the wake of the ADC presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general election.

Lawal has since resigned from the ADC, alleging that the primary process was manipulated in favor of Atiku. He argued that Atiku’s candidacy would compromise the opposition’s ability to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming election.

During his public criticisms, Lawal referred to the former Vice President as “Kachalla Atiku” and accused elements of Atiku’s camp of driving ethnic and religious agendas, stating these factors influenced his decision to leave the party.

The camp of the former vice president has rejected Lawal’s claims. Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, countered the allegations, accusing Lawal of attempting to influence the primary outcome himself and characterizing his grievances as the reaction of a disappointed politician.
Furthermore, Atiku criticized Lawal’s public comments, accusing him of making ethnically divisive remarks regarding national insecurity.

Atiku maintained that criminality should not be attributed to any single ethnic group and described such rhetoric as harmful to national unity.

In the ADC primary election conducted in April, Atiku secured the party’s ticket after defeating Rotimi Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to sources available to us that time, Obasanjo said he will do a single term but after that, he decided to go for second term. I was physically present at Rivers state Governor’s Lodge when the heat became too much and Obasanjo in the presence of all of us knelt down in front of Atiku begging him to allow him do a second term. I think that was how Atiku missed the opportunity by agreeing to Obasanjo’s plea. His thought was that at least, if Obasanjo completes his second term, he will hand over to him but you all know the story of Third Term Agenda and that was how they fell apart. Atiku had the best opportunity to become president in 2003 and lost it. He had the support of PDP governors then.

Atiku believes in ranching, deserves our votes – Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has disclosed that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a sincere advocate of ranching as solution to the lingering herders crisis in the country.

The Governor who spoke Thursday at his reelection campaign rally in Katsina/Ala also stated that the former Vice President was not a religious fundamentalist.

He reiterated his appeal to the electorate in the state to vote massively for Atiku who was on the same page with the people of the state and all PDP candidates in the forthcoming election.

He observed that while President Muhammadu Buhari was canvassing for the opening up of cattle routes which would impact negatively on the land of the people of the state if implemented, Alhaji Atiku had been establishing ranches for his cattle and even proceeded to build feed-mills.

He said, “ranching is critical to the survival of our state because it remains the best solution to the incessant crises between farmers and herders with monumental loss of human lives and property over the years hence we must vote against those who opposed it.

What role did Bola Tinubu play in all of these?

At the very beginning, he was part of the Yar’Adua PF group from Jos. He was a senator then, and as far as the group went, we related. The crisis started post-election. When Abacha came, one of the things he wanted to do was to be the administrator for Lagos.

Yes. I am sure you have seen pictures of him and my dad. He was hoping that there would be civilian administrators like we had under IBB but Abacha said no, that he was going to have military administrators. So he (Tinubu) said okay, in that case, can I be a deputy administrator? But Abacha said that there wouldn’t be deputies. Then he wanted the post of a commissioner.

Yes. Then it was a choice between him and someone very close to Jakande who has passed on now. I can’t remember his name, but because Babagana was already in the government, that guy was picked as commissioner. But really, Senator Tinubu had lost out already.

Was Tinubu very close to MKO?

Yes, he was close enough. He and Adeniyi Adele, a very good guy, were close to my father. In fact, Adeniyi was closer to my father and more dedicated to the process than anyone of them. When my documentary comes out, you will see Tinubu’s take on issues. So once he lost out, automatically, he became a NADECO member and Adeniyi was incarcerated.
