Hmmmm!
Funny thing we had no shots in the second half the first half was more balanced between the sides.

Portugal had six shots two on target to our five shots two on target.

Anyway it's just a friendly we did well plus Chelle experimented that's what friendly matches are for.

Overall, it was a good, friendly game. The Super Eagles used to have so many weak points, but this team is coming together. There is no shame in losing to this Portuguese team that I believe, along with Spain and France, is one of the three World Cup favorites. The left-back position on this team needs to be addressed. Zaidu Sanusi is just not the solution, and he should be thanked and retired from the national team. Semi Ajayi's lack of ball-playing makes it hard on this team to build from the back. I like Semi Ajayi as a defender, but he is in his 30s, and with the emergence of Benjamin Federicks and Chibuike Nwaiwu, I think it is time to allow him to concentrate on his club football. He has done a very good job for Nigeria, but this team is transitioning into a major global force, and he is simply not at the required level to tag along. The right back, Akpan, was thrown into a deep blue sea today, and it showed. He is a young, talented player; he will improve, but he is not at the level required for the Super Eagles at the moment. Bruno Onyemachi is an okay player, but he is simply not good enough to be in the Super Eagles starting team if we are really about competing with the best teams in the world. The Super Eagles desperately need a Mikel Obi-profiled midfielder on this team. The development of Ebenezer Akinsamiro is very important for the future of this team since he is the closest profile to Mikel that I can see on the horizon. Eric Chelle needs to scout far and wide and see if he can get a Mikel Obi-kind profile player for the team. If we can get an elite left back and an elite-level box-to-box midfielder, then the Super Eagles will be a formidable team for any team in the world. The boys tried today; they were not embarrassed or humiliated playing away to a formidable Portuguese team.

Games like this are for learning purposes and to compare with other games. You can check stats posted above and assess
The stats are secondary to the eye test really. We didn't play ultra defensive, could have done better with possession when we had it but generally we had times we played our own game, twice lost a definite goal scoring counter attack chance, all while playing against Portugal.

Calling it terrible is a stretch. In fact, that we actually think we could have done better tells me we actually did decently.

I pray we get our own Bernado Silva one day. We need this possession and recycling revolution for all national teams. No be run run counter and individual brilliance abeg. Philosophy that hurts opponents is why Morocco and Senegal are currently powerhouses on the global stage. One day sha. This coach looks hungry.
Morocco is not even among the traditional powerhouse in African football talk less of world football.
They belong to the second tier powerhouse.
They need to maintain this form a bit longer to be among the main powerhouse.

No African team is qualified as powerhouse in senior world football.

main powerhouse
Nigeria
Cameron
Egypt
CIV
Ghana
Senegal

Second tier
Algeria
Morocco
Tunisia
SA
etc

Some of the odds were moving up and down before the match, but the bookmakers still gave the Super Eagles odds of 1.28 against Portugal, which basically suggested that we had little or no chance of winning.

Personally, I believe one area the team still needs to improve is its mentality. Showing too much respect to so-called "big teams" is not a good thing. The Super Eagles need more players with the mentality and courage of Bassey and Frederick—players who are fearless and willing to compete regardless of the opponent standing in front of them.

I point this out because I've noticed this attitude in many of our big matches . We cannot become a world-beating team if we continue approaching "elite opponents" with a sense of inferiority.

That said, I have to give credit to Chelle. He has done an excellent job turning the team around. For the first time in a while, the Super Eagles are playing with a clear identity, and the fans have far more confidence in the team than they did before.

Before the match, I told a friend that Portugal would not score three goals against this Super Eagles side. The team has grown beyond that stage, and that's a positive sign. We may still have areas to improve, but the progress is undeniable, and the foundation being built is encouraging.

Alhassan Yusuf and Nnadi bring the physicality, energy, and aggression we desperately need in midfield. They can win battles, protect the defense, and dominate the center of the park.
Iwobi should be given the freedom to operate higher up and provide those killer passes that unlock defenses. He has the vision and creativity to make things happen in the final third.
That said, Alhassan Yusuf also has quality on the ball and can pick out decisive passes when needed. This combination gives us the perfect balance of steel, energy, and creativity in midfield.

Sadly this team will remain Osimehen fc still for a long while

Most of our Attackers cum Strikers bar Akor are not serious

That's why we didn't do well in tough games especially during the qualifiers without Osimehen

Biggest culprits are Simon, Onuachu, Terem, Awoniyi, Boniface and Chuckwueze(very unserious human being).

Our strikers cannot fight their way to winning goals for us when Osimehen is not around, they will be strolling all around the pitch.

See the way Akor fought all through until he left the pitch. I dare say that if Akor started the qualifiers just like the others in the absence of Osimehen, we would have been at this world cup.

I like Alhassan, but he is not a ball carrier, he does not have the passing range, and he is not a tempo-dictating midfielder. That is the profile that we desperately need.

Misses is part of the game. The point I'm making is that we didn't abandon our game. I admit the 2nd half had us doing less going forward (no surprise seeing the quality gap and the motivation to please home fans) but I could as well say that the chance squandered by Chuks would have changed the conversation.

Apart from Benjamin and Akor, Chelle has not really introduced any new players into the starting 11 in competitive matches. He is still largely relying on the players he inherited from Peseiro. He is gradually building his own team, and hopefully he gives his newly discovered players a chance in the starting 11 when the AFCON qualifiers begin in September. He should also consider retiring a few of the players who have nothing to offer to the team again.

To be honest, we may have missed out on Carney Chukwuemeka. He has the profile that could have solved a lot of those problems in our midfield. If Nigeria had qualified for the World Cup, we might have had a better chance of convincing him to commit to us ahead of Austria. A midfield with his ball-carrying ability, creativity, and technical quality would have added a different dimension to the team.

Abdullahi Bewene has more topflight football experience in the Czech Liga than Christian Akpan has in Belgium.

Both are 21 yrs but we are talking 23 topflight league games vs 1 topflight game.

And the difference shows but to be fair, Bewene had 90mins on his debut unlike Akpan who had 60 today.
Bewene had a mixed 1st 45 but blew us away with his 2nd 45.
Akpan's 1st 45 was more underpar than the few times he did okay. His 2nd 45 only lasted 15mins.

I would like to keep seeing more of them. Bewene is already ahead and I hope he builds on this experience.

Akpan needs more topflight games at club level to catch up and show his true potential.

I've noticed that the goals Okoye concede on gwg are mostly worldies. Very sweet and insane goals.
Maybe our opponents like attempting such against him.
