In a country like Nigeria, proposals for state police often generate debate because they offer potential benefits (such as local security responsiveness) but also raise concerns. Some commonly cited disadvantages include:

1. Political Abuse by State Governments

Critics worry that governors could use state police to harass political opponents, suppress dissent, influence elections, or intimidate critics. Given the strong influence many governors already have over state institutions, this is often the most frequently mentioned concern.

2. Uneven Standards Across States

Nigeria's states differ significantly in wealth and administrative capacity. Wealthier states might be able to recruit, train, equip, and pay officers effectively, while poorer states could struggle, leading to major differences in policing quality.

3. Funding Challenges

Running a police force is expensive. Costs include salaries, training, vehicles, communications systems, forensic services, and equipment. Some states already face difficulties paying civil servants regularly, which could affect police effectiveness and increase corruption risks.

4. Risk of Ethnic or Communal Bias

Nigeria is ethnically and religiously diverse. There are concerns that state police forces could favor particular ethnic, religious, or political groups, especially during local conflicts, potentially worsening tensions rather than reducing them.

5. Coordination Problems

Many security threats—such as kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, and organized crime—cross state boundaries. Multiple state police forces could create coordination difficulties, intelligence-sharing gaps, and jurisdictional disputes.

6. Increased Corruption Risks

Creating additional police structures could create more opportunities for corruption if oversight mechanisms are weak. Without strong accountability systems, misconduct might become harder to monitor.

7. Potential Threat to National Unity

Some argue that highly autonomous state police forces could weaken centralized security control and, in extreme circumstances, be used to support separatist or anti-federal political agendas.

8. Human Rights Concerns

If oversight institutions are weak, state police could become tools for arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, or excessive use of force. Effective independent complaints and judicial review systems would be essential.

9. Duplication of Security Structures

Maintaining both federal and state police forces may increase bureaucracy and administrative costs. Responsibilities could overlap, creating confusion about who handles particular crimes or emergencies.

10. Difficulty in Establishing Effective Oversight

For state police to work well, strong institutions would be needed to investigate misconduct and enforce accountability. Building such systems across all states would be challenging and costly.

The Counterargument

Supporters of state police argue that local officers understand local languages, cultures, and security challenges better than a centralized force, which could improve crime prevention and response times. The debate in Nigeria is therefore often less about whether state police are good or bad in principle and more about whether adequate safeguards can be created to prevent abuse.

In summary, the main concerns are political misuse, unequal state capacity, funding difficulties, ethnic bias, coordination challenges, corruption, and weak oversight. Whether these disadvantages outweigh the potential benefits depends largely on the legal and institutional safeguards put in place.
State governors are still under FG. So it will be hard for them to do such successfully..

It’s wont be that easy as you’re thinking it is

Its a welcome idea.let each state setup their own security police architecture, with well laid out laws and juridictions.the fg should have no business with state security when the governors are getting huge security votes

a post I’m waiting for. It will never see the light of the day before the elections.

Because it will be against Tinubu. Tinubu will rather prefer to use the police to control and help him rigg the 2027 election than implementing it.

It will only be a campaign tool to decieve the gullible. Tinubu will implement it into law towards the end of his 2nd tenure. That if he wins
Thank you

This is one huge step towards true federalism and solving insecurity
Observers have seen how this government is moving to devolve power to the subnationals.
States can now generate their own power
States will soon have their police
LG autonomy wil be a done deal soon

State governors would start feeling the heat now. They've allowed to go away with less scrutiny.
God bless you , Tinubu is quietly putting governors on the hot seat , after that oyo kidnap and makinde wanted to play politics he was simply shown receipts of how he was against lg autonomy and state police , he has quickly calmed down, by the time state police is fully approved and passed in all states no governor will have excuse after collecting security votes .

Stop pretending as if you are laughing but rather gnashing of teeth.

No Nigerian citizen of any region hates Nigeria rather they hate the POLITICIANS making life difficult for them in their own country.

Have you seen any Ghanian citizen say he or she hates his country Ghana before ? No! Because politicians in Ghana are up and doing and are not corrupt like Nigeria politicians.

Have you seen a Kenyan, Rwandan, South African and Gabon citizens saying they hate their country ? NO!

The Nigerian politicians and corruption is our number 1 problem in this country, and that is what we hate not Nigeria!

I know you knew all this things, but your hate for some regions won't let you speak the truth.
😂😂😂😂😂😂

Pain is that you? You can tell that gibberish to the marines…..I won’t even bother to dignify you with a response and let wallow in your lies and deception……who no know Una before😂😂😂

You guys should please stop giving this guy relevance. He has no business meddling in our political affairs: he should instead focus on his constituents in West Virginia who actually voted him into office to represent them.

Passing a bill is one thing, implementation is another thing entirely

With the state policing now, it means states will provide whatever equipments needed for the state police to function. Who will fund it?
States have money and they can generate more. All the security votes of the governors, what have they been using it for? Lazy governors will no longer sit in their states and accuse Abuja when there is security lapse.

Lagos the ever forward looking state is fairly ready. They have state security trust fund where the government and private sector contributes money. This was established during Tinubu's time when robbery was much. It funds the RRS that he established. That's why the federal police in Lagos is the best equipped. Others should learn.

I hope Senate will pass it into bill. This is the only way terrorism can be stopped. It will only thrive in states where both the federal government security and state security are the very sponsors of terrorism.

This is the type of practical solutions we need. i am happy we have almost a united house party wise, this kind of bill may face political undertone hindrance with heavily divided party lines. with 70% of the house APC, it was easier to pass, and it will be useful that over 70% of states are APC as well when it goes to the state of house of assemblies. Many people simply think tinubu will fiatly annouce state police for states. as a military president. grin grin grin

It is easy to criticise and spew jargons about problems, it becomes crickets when practical solutions are requested.

There was over 70 pages framework provided on how federal police will need to work in conjunction with state police. The next concern after state implementation will be appropriate recruitment and funding.

When we have problem, we create another one out of it.

We have policemen under a bastardized institution - that have mostly become criminals or aiding and abetting criminality due to lack of proper funding(poor remuneration) and corruption. Instead repositioning the existing one to meet up with our current security challenges, we're creating ones that would end up not getting paid and might use access to guns to work with criminals to feed.

How many states can pay the minimum wage? Can they pay police already taught how to handle guns? What happens when he's salary is being owed? We're not serious.
