I disagree with your opinion.
No school in Canada is facing financial pressure because even if the whole of Africa stop applying to Canadian institutions only China alone will cover the gap. Remember there are India, Arab nations, European countries, Brazil , Argentina and the Caribbeans etc. Therefore there is no shortage of international students enrolment in Canada.

As for Permanent Residency. The fact that every reader of this post should take is that if you are able to graduate successfully in any accredited canadian institution no matter the course of study your PR will eventually be established.

Lets focus on the main topic which is How to process the Canada study visa successfully. Anything the student face in Canada after study is irrelevant topic.
I respectfully disagree, though I don't know whether you are a visa agent or not.

The reality is that several Canadian colleges and institutions have already announced program cuts, staff layoffs, hiring freezes, and even campus closures following the reduction in international student permits. That alone shows that some schools were heavily dependent on international tuition revenue and are feeling the impact.

Also, graduating from a Canadian institution does not automatically guarantee permanent residence. There is no Canadian law or immigration policy that says a student will receive PR simply because they completed a program in Canada. Thousands of graduates are currently struggling to obtain enough CRS points or qualify under available immigration pathways.

Most importantly, what happens after graduation is not irrelevant. For many students and their families, studying in Canada is one of the biggest financial investments they will ever make. It is only fair that people understand both sides of the story: how to obtain a study permit and what the realities are after graduation, including employment opportunities, cost of living, work permits, and PR options.

People deserve complete information before spending tens of thousands of dollars, not just information about getting a visa approval.

Your claim that Canadian institutions are not under financial pressure is contradicted by what colleges and universities across the country have publicly announced.

Examples include:

• Seneca Polytechnic (Ontario) – Markham campus closure.

• Centennial College (Ontario) – 49 programs suspended.

• Fleming College (Ontario) – Nearly 30 programs suspended, staff reductions, merger discussions.

• Sheridan College (Ontario) – Multiple program suspensions and financial restructuring.

• Mohawk College (Ontario) – Program cuts and workforce reductions.

• Algonquin College (Ontario) – Program suspensions and budget reductions.

• Loyalist College (Ontario) – Program and staffing reviews due to lower enrolment.

• Lambton College (Ontario) – Program cuts and financial adjustments.

• Georgian College (Ontario) – Cost-cutting measures and program reviews.

• Canadore College (Ontario) – Program reductions and restructuring.

• Northern College (Ontario) – Program suspensions and budget measures.

• St. Lawrence College (Ontario) – Program reviews and financial restraint measures.

• Conestoga College (Ontario) – Significant decline in international student applications and enrolment.

• Fanshawe College (Ontario) – Budget adjustments and program reviews.

• Durham College (Ontario) – Financial restructuring and enrolment concerns.

• North Island College (British Columbia) – Ucluelet campus closure and staffing reductions.

• Selkirk College (British Columbia) – Hiring freeze, staff reductions, program intake suspensions.

• Vancouver Community College (British Columbia) – Revenue losses and enrolment reductions.

• College of New Caledonia (British Columbia) – Program and budget adjustments.

• Saskatchewan Polytechnic (Saskatchewan) – Enrolment and budget concerns linked to policy changes.

• Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (Manitoba) – Announced closure following a sharp decline in international student enrolment.

• Assiniboine College (Manitoba) – Public concerns about the impact of international student caps.

• Nova Scotia Community College (Nova Scotia) – Reported financial pressure from reduced international student intake.

• New Brunswick Community College (New Brunswick) – Raised concerns regarding international student policy impacts.

• Holland College (Prince Edward Island) – Enrolment and revenue concerns.

• College of the North Atlantic (Newfoundland and Labrador) – Adjustments due to changing international student numbers.

In addition:

• Colleges Ontario warned that the sector is facing one of the most severe financial crises in decades.

• OPSEU reported more than 10,000 college-sector job losses linked to international student cap impacts.

• Multiple institutions across Canada announced layoffs, hiring freezes, program cancellations, campus closures, and service reductions between 2024 and 2026.

Therefore, the argument that there is no shortage of international students and no financial pressure on Canadian institutions is not supported by the evidence. The challenges are being reported by colleges, universities, unions, provincial organizations, and the institutions themselves across Canada.

Be honest with urself!!

I can answer the first question to some degree. The competition is very strong. The best way to get a supervisor is to contact professors during research you are interested in. You have to show what you have done in your under grad that is related to the research. Many professors will indicate if they are accepting graduate students or not. You have to be very patient with them since they would be receiving many inquiries from other prospective students as well.

Jimmy17:
Hello Nairalanders,

I am a recent Geography graduate from the University of Ibadan (Second Class Upper) and I just completed my NYSC at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in Ibadan. I am currently targeting a funded thesis-based master's degree in Canada for Fall 2027, specifically in the area of environmental governance and sustainable development.

I have already identified some programs and schools I am interested in, including McGill University, University of Waterloo, Western University, Queen's University, and University of Ottawa. I am also currently applying for the McCall MacBain Scholarship at McGill.

I would love to hear from anyone who has gone through the Canadian graduate school process, especially:

1. How did you find and secure a supervisor? Did you cold email professors and did it work?
2. How long did your study permit take to process as a Nigerian applicant?
3. Any tips on writing a strong statement of purpose or personal statement?
4. Is there anything you wish you had known before applying or arriving in Canada?
5. Any experience with the McCall MacBain Scholarship specifically?

Any advice at all — about applications, funding, life in Canada, or anything in between — would be genuinely appreciated.

Thank you.

Oga, I know you're a visa agent or taking student application to generate income which is not bad, but let's be honest. The impact of reduced international student enrolment on Canadian colleges is not an opinion; it's a fact. Campus closures, program suspensions, staff layoffs, hiring freezes have been reported across Canada, pls google is ur friend.Your clients will still be your clients. There is no need to deny what is already in the public domain. People deserve honest information about both the opportunities and the challenges before investing their hard-earned money.Telling people the truth is not discouragement. It is responsible advice.

Can anyone recommend universities in canada for MSc who won't require your undergraduate uni to send transcript directly. I know that some UK universities don't require this.

My nephew graduated from uniben 2023, and got his transcript and cert then.

Since then he has applied to universities in canada but getting UNIBEN to send his transcript has been an uphill task

You are the real visa agent who is creating fear in the study visa thread in order to gain clients for the PR (Permanent Residency) section.

What is the business of Nigerian prospective study visa applicants with the closure of some campuses or laying off of staffs?

My friend, Canada is bigger than Nigeria almost 13 times and do you think (lets say) the whole of Nigeria and even Ghana stopping all student visa application to Canada will cause any public research University in Canada to lay off staffs or close their campuses 😀 ? If McGill University even has an annex campus in Abuja they wont close the campus because of that. Go and research the population of Chinese students alone in Canada not to talk of Japan, India, Thailand etc before we go to European countries.

All your postings is to create unnecessary fear in the mind of prospective student visa applicants and channel them into PR which is (PR) 100% harder to acquire. That apart, if any Nigerian student graduated in a Canadian University and find it difficult to stay behind then let him or her come back home and use the brain for our country or are not 85% of study visa applicants promising in their visa applications to return home after study ?

The fact that one graduated successfully from any Canadian reputable institution and return home is a life time feat that will always attract employers of labour or any organisation in your curriculum vitae ( rèsumè).

I am an independent observer and if you claim i am an agent kindly post the evidence . Besides there are lot of agents from other countries learning from Nairaland or do you think that Nairaland is a small village 😎

My friend lets focus on the goal of this thread. How to process Canada Student Visa. Not how to process PR or how the canadian Universities are laying off staffs.

You are being dishonest and trying to twist the facts.

First, you claimed that no Canadian university or institution is facing financial pressure due to reduced international student enrolment. Yet campus closures, program suspensions, hiring freezes, and staff layoffs have been widely reported and are publicly available for anyone to verify.

Second, you created ur profile less than 3 weeks ago attached your email address to your profile, making it easy for prospective gullible applicants to contact you privately, while presenting yourself as an "independent observer." People can draw their own conclusions about that.

The reality is simple: graduating from a Canadian institution does not automatically lead to PR. Many graduates today are struggling with low CRS scores, expiring permits, and uncertain immigration pathways.

There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to study in Canada. The problem is selling a dream while ignoring the challenges. Prospective students deserve the complete picture, not selective information that supports a particular business interest.

Am i supposed to have created my account 20 years ago ? Or has Nairaland stop accepting new member ? Or am i supposed to have used 10 years on Nairaland before i started contributing to the topics ?

If i am the only one on Nairaland with my email on my profile then let the admin delete my profile right now . Your contact on your profile does not mean advertising. We have various aims on Nairaland . An organisation may seek my service as a reviewer or admission Counselor etc so dont have the illusion that i am a travel agent. If nairaland is not doing anything positively in your life Mr i challenge you to delete your account right away. If you cannot do that it means you are in the same boat with all nairalanders.

am not selling any dream you are the one selling your dream. I am following and maintaining Nairaland policy by not derailing the thread. Go and advertise the closure of Universities and Canada economy in the politics section.

When a student got admitted into Canadian school and he or she was able to graduate successfully the Permanent Residency pathway will open automatically. Such student would have made friends with Canadians and Americans or even dating a citizen in the case of a single student so friends and school officials as well as natural immersion will teach such graduate with the next steps. Stop promoting PR on Student Visa thread indirectly .

Nobody said having a new account is a crime. The issue is that you are asking people to ignore publicly available facts while presenting opinions as facts.

And no, PR does not "open automatically" after graduation. That is exactly the kind of misleading statement people are correcting. Thousands of graduates have completed Canadian programs and are still struggling with CRS scores, work permits, and immigration pathways.

Making friends, dating a citizen, or hoping someone will show you the next steps is not an immigration strategy. Facts matter more than wishful thinking.

Prospective students deserve accurate information about both study permits and post-graduation realities. Hiding the challenges helps nobody.

That is a completely ignorant statement based on sentiment rather than facts and shows a poor understanding of how the Canadian immigration system works.
Who told you PR is automatic after graduation? If that were true, thousands of graduates would not be struggling today with expiring PGWPs and no clear immigration pathway.
And where exactly are all these Americans supposedly coming to Canada to study?
Immigration is based on meeting legal requirements, not on making friends, dating a citizen, or hoping someone will show you the next steps. That's wishful thinking, not immigration advice.

I think the problem is that whenever you are proven wrong, you always look for excuses to cover your tracks and avoid admitting your mistakes.

There is nothing wrong with accepting that you were mistaken or provided inaccurate information. Instead of making unnecessary allegations, acknowledge the facts and address the main topic being discussed. And stop using the title PHD as a shield for poor research methodology. And

Let me soften my english grammer for you. When a Nigerian sss 3 student is done with waec. Admission into University will come automatically : The meaning of the sentence is that friends, family, teachers etc and the student natural inclination will tell him or her when to go and obtain UTME form and when to start jamb lesson. and the rest is a story if he or she pass the jamb once or 10 times.

Mr. Leave the prospective student visa applicants on this thread alone. Let them focus on how to process admissions and visa. Stop creating the fear of what awaits them during PR process.
