Tell me why Nigerian universities and polytechnics are still running the below programs if not that they have swore to destroy Nigeria:

Marketing
Mass Communication
Public Administration
Animal Husbandry
Guidance and Counseling
Sociology
Bee Rearing
Physical Education
Literature
etc
etc
Well, if you don't have animal husbandry who will marry the animals?? grin

I have never earn shishi with it and it has become useless. what a waste of 4 years of my life
Take heart, you're not alone. Even some who are successful never used their degree - take Oyakhilome and Oyedepo, both of whom studied and graduated a hard course like architecture. See below

First thing that came to your mind is "China is ahead world". You don't have any right to compare, because you don't know anything.

The knowledge from these courses may be important, inspiring and uplifting but they should be studied outside the 4 walls of a university; and these should be studied only by those who automatically just have passion and interest in them.

AI helps, not absolute as such. AI will not go into the field, gather data, and implement the outcome of such. Original ideas remain to be investigated in those fields.
AI is growing. The story will be different in a year from now, versus some school curriculums that have been stagnant for decades. Many teachers and professors teach same thing every term/semester without paying attention to growing trends.

How many schools teach social media or AI in Nigeria? Yet, several people see them as a means of income today. Sometimes, we just need to adapt to the tide and not stay buried in some analog mindsets.

Even all organizations that want to stay competitive prioritize AI in their organizations, so theres nothing wrong with nations prioritizing AI to stay competitive with other nations that may think backward.

1. People who use the phrase "useless degrees" don't realize how stupid they sound.

2. If more Nigerian politicians and the average person had these "useless" degrees, maybe there would be less chaos, violence, and poverty.

3. China is the same country full of depraved idiots who do this:

Why study Zoology when we have Vet medicine

Well Zoology is study of animals
TheStoriesOfMan:
Zoology? No

Anatomy? Yes. The anatomy should be divided into human anatomy, animal anatomy and organical anatomy.

Even before the advent of AI, some courses ought to have been relegated or dropped. Why go to the university and spend 4/5 years to study courses like Sociology and Anthropology, Music, History, International Relation, English, Political Science, etcetera. Can't we just have one or two institutes(either at the national or int'l level) that focus or specialize on each of those disciplines? These institute will do the research work, publish it online and those who have interest or passion on any of the disciplines will learn from it. Also, feedback, contribution, reassessment can also be relayed to the institutes.
Because those subjects are actually important.

We need Arts, Humanities as well as STEM for balance.

You don't want STEM running the world. Tech bros are running the world currently and look at how horrible it is. They keep creating products that destroy humanity. They've calculated humans as necessary and unnecessary and Black people of all backgrounds are unnecessary because we contribute the least to humanity yetbour continent sits on vast resources.

I am a STEM professional, I'm trained to be as black-and-white as possible rather than look at the full picture.

Arts looks at the value of things and people and deems us all as worthy of life. Science weighs and measures everything precisely.

It is why AI is so dangerous: eventually it gets things wrong and works purely on Logic. Asking it personal questions for advice always leads to it making brutal inhuman decisions. I'm speaking from experience. It's why you shouldn't take blind advice from the internet: strangers don't know you and can't see the whole picture. AI works that way, it was written by people who needed it to give answers in a straightforward manner whilst sounding human.

Title of a course does not set its value. Study what you want and use technology to do things.

Automation is not everything

If no one is studying these courses in the university, who will eventually do the research in these institutes?

A lot of people don't even practice what they studied in the university, so what's the need of scraping any course??

Let whoever wants to study any course in the university, study it. He/She would eventually find his/her path in life.

when they are still teaching FORTRAN & COBOL in Nigerian universities.
Why shouldn't they be taught?
Are they not part of computer science?

You have to understand that university is not a boot camp but a research institute, where every thing that concerns a particular topic has to be taught, regardless of economic value or what you think is important.

This does really make sense, and while I do advocate for math education to be learned by everyone, we need the arts to balance things out. I do think my academic background of life sciences enable me to ask questions beyond the surface compared to if I were a pure math grad. Topical issues need to be looked at holistically and follow-up questions to fully assess them.

However, at Nigeria's stage of development, we need more STEM (technical and research) grads than any other category.

But we don't have the infrastructure to push STEM and we're not interested in doing so. Even your elites and upper middle class who can afford it, will pay for shabby STEM primary and secondary school education than actual serious work.

I work in STEM education, my colleague is pushing it at Primary and Secondary level and I know how hard it is for her to convince parents to invest.

Even Nigerian tech bros that are young are giving side chics N500,000 to come and see them than cobble money together to invest in a public 3D lab in Yaba or research into any of our indigenous plants good for healthcare.

We don't value education here tbh.

Education is not a prority in nigeria, the gubbmint prefers oil than education. Cameroon takes education way more serious than nigeria. Cameroon has poor gdp but their hdi is way more than nigeria own because education is literally free there.

Untill nigeria get education right, we forever remain a massive turd hole.

So, it is a cultural issue, not a money problem.

It might be your trade secret, but what is that significant difference in math pedagogy between top schools (say Loyola or any good Catholic school) in Nigeria vs say the Singaporean public school system (which you have referenced)?

The difference is how Math Sense is built from Primary School.

We're taught the "How To Solve", not "Why are We Doing This". Our questions are also very straightforward: "1+1 =2" versus "Mary had one apple, Uche has another, how many apples in total?".

By the time the kids get to Secondary school in Nigeria, it's mostly crammed work. So no matter how good Loyola is, they're cramming compared to Singaporean schools.

My kids did entrance exams this year and more expensive Catholic schools, Corona Secondary and James Hope College were the most challenging.
