The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has disclosed how he would have removed the subsidy on petroleum products if he was the president.

Obi disclosed that he would have removed the subsidy on fuel in an organized manner and not on the day of his presidential inauguration.

In 2023, President Bola Tinubu had removed the subsidy on fuel during his inauguration as Nigeria’s president.

However, Obi said he would have met with stakeholders in the Petroleum sector first before announcing the subsidy removal.

Obi spoke in an interview with Rufai Oseni while dismissing claims that he criticized Tinubu over the manner he removed the subsidy on fuel.

He said: “I didn’t criticize Tinubu for removing the subsidy. I said I would have removed it, but in an organized manner. I wouldn’t have announced it at my inauguration.

“I would have first sat down with operators in the industry because we know there is a lot of criminality around the subsidy.

“I would remove it to determine the exact amount being spent on subsidy and also address the issue of exchange rate deregulation. But in doing these things, the most important thing is to fight corruption head-on.

“Since the subsidy was removed, what has been the impact on the average Nigerian? We have even borrowed more money than we used to when subsidy was still in place.”

How can you just come on your day of inauguration and say subsidy is gone without sitting down for a day in office to study the optics and implement a strategy for removal?

He will call the same people who benefit from the present corrupt system and tell them.

"Guys, I want to remove food from your mouth, tell me the best way to do it?"

And the same stakeholders (NNPC, NUPENG, and co) will now smile back at him and tell him, 'yeah, you can go ahead'

If anyone was ever in doubt, it is now very clear, this man does not have what it takes to even be an estate chairman not to talk of president of Nigeria.

The same set of people who almost frustrated Dangotte refinery is the same set of people he would have gone to seek permission from to remove the subsidy in an organized way.

I thought he would have had the courage to condemn the exchange rate policy.

The problem was by August 2022, debt servicing was eating 97% of government reveneue, and a big cause of the debt was the subsidy we were keeping on fuel.(Add oil prices being so low in 2020 and 2021, due to covid, which harmed our budget badly and forced us to take loans massively)>

For all those blasting GEJ for removing subsidy, there was a good reason why he wanted to do it in 2012, it was to avoid a situation where subsidy was indirectly eating most government revenue, forcing us to borrow even more. But, yeah, people could not see it. Had subsidy gone in 2012, we might have been in a better place by now. The issue of debt eating most government revenue may not have even arisen

Well, you cannot determine the exact amount spent on subsidy because fuel consumption is not static, nor is the estimated amount of money needed for subsidy in a given year static, because of production costs, and at the same time, the issue of naira value falling because forex is being spent paying for subsidy...which also affects the cost.

ALso, smuggling. A lot of Nigerians think that big marketers were doing the smuggling, but the vast majority, north and south were small scale smugglers. That forces subsidy costs up, and since it is nigh impossible to know how many of them were doing it, that makes estimating subsidy costs problematic

Finally, illicit fuel was being smugglied out as far as Central African republic and Ghana. That makes estimating subsidy costs even more difficult because we do not know how many people in foreign african countries are using smuggled Nigerian fuel.

“Since the subsidy was removed, what has been the impact on the average Nigerian? We have even borrowed more money than we used to when subsidy was still in place.”

Borrowing is happening because the years of paying subsidy helped to increase our debt...meaning we had to use government revenue to pay off those debts.

Meanwhile,we still need monies for budget. Otherwise no salary payment, no projects done, nothing...and since income from personal tax is too low to fund our budget...and oil income is also very low...more borrowing. ANd we still have to service the debt..more borrowing.

Still, we got to vote out APC, because they were responsible for the mess as detailed above. But Obi should stop this populism and tell us hard truths. We Nigerians can take it.

Do a supplementary budget, if you have to. Give yourself time to study the books to know what you have or don't have, then take a STRUCTURED approach that won't kill the people you want to lead.

If I were to be a member of obi team, I will tell him to stop granting interviews for now.

My friend, there's no organized way in removing fuel subside, it's either partial removal that will still be abused by marketers or full removal. It's not everything the dull Obi says that you guys will applaud. Question some of his answers and solutions. Stop believing like Tinubu supporters that praise everything Tinubu does. The country can't move forward with people like Tinubu and Obi supporters
