Nigerian varsity cracks down on lecturers who absconded after sponsored programmes By Daily Trust Thu, 25 Jun 2026 15:44:21 WAT The management of the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, has published the names of members of staff who failed to return to duty after completing academic programmes sponsored by the institution. The names were contained in a public notice signed by the university’s Registrar, Alhaji Abubakar Mijinyawa. According to the notice, the affected staff breached the terms of bond agreements signed with the university by either resigning from service or failing to resume duty after completing their studies. Those listed include Afolabi Lukman Olalekan of the Department of Chemistry, with a liability of N12.04 million; Muhammad A. Alhassan of the Department of Computer Science, who resigned and owes N14.56 million; Yakubu Sani Wudil of the Department of Physics, with a liability of N18.26 million; and Ramla Muhammad Kama of the Department of Pharmacology, who owes N16.34 million. The university said the affected staff cut across several departments, including Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Soil Science, Pharmacology and Environmental Sciences. FUD said measures taken against the defaulters include suspension of salaries, issuance of notices of indebtedness and referral of cases to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC). The notice showed that the outstanding liabilities range from about N3.8 million to over N18 million, with some of the affected staff already making partial refunds. For instance, Bala Ismail Adamu of the Department of Physics was reported to have refunded N988,195.94 out of a total liability of N12.9 million, while Abdulhamid Aliyu Ardo of Computer Science refunded N1 million out of N14.51 million owed to the institution. The university reiterated that beneficiaries of its staff development sponsorship programmes are required to return and serve the institution in line with the terms of their bond agreements, warning that defaulters would face disciplinary action and recovery measures. https://dailytrust.com/nigerian-varsity-cracks-down-on-lecturers-who-absconded-after-sponsored-programmes/

Serve ke? The fastest way to kill any organization is to fill it up with disloyal staff. This disloyal group must never be allowed back into that school system. Refer them to ICPC and EFCC jor! The minister of education and NUC should blacklist them from working in any Nigerian university for life! |

If they're smart then forcing 10 handouts on each of their students this semester will clear the debt.

When we were to leave Nigeria, my wife tried to secure a Nigerian government scholarship from either ABSU (Abia State Government in the darks day of Okezie) or via TEFUND but I vehemently refused. Because I don’t want to have my family name listed like this in a newspaper. I didn’t want to be held to any contract or clause. We simply self sponsored and are better off without any feelings of indebtedness or allegiance towards Nigeria, Abia state or ABSU. Lots of Nigerian scholars here were sponsored but have no plans of returning to Nigeria or even repaying their debts. They’re simply happy to play the system. |

duduade:Study leave without pay wont benefit many of them as they would like to travel with their families to a new clime that they will need accommodation and feeding fees to adapt to. They camt even work full hours in many climes, so they do not make much while rheyre studying. |

Facts remain that promises and oath made should be honoured. If those involved are not honouring their promises, what makes them different from the leaders we a complaining about today? Integrity and discipline should be cultured into our system. |

It is a major betrayal because education is important for the well-being of society. Educators must have a motivation that goes far beyond making money. |

This is a welcome development. I know someone who went abroad for his PhD. After completing it, he got a job as an airport porter in Germany, helping travellers with their luggage, and also secured scholarship for another master's programme without notifying his institution. Meanwhile, his salary was still being in Nigeria. Last year, when the NUC directed universities to conduct a staff headcount, he was among those who were discovered. The implication of what these guys are doing is that they end up blocking opportunities for the unemployed. |

We have them all over the Nigeria institutions. Many lecturers will travel abroad and wouldn't come back to Nigeria. Some will marry their citizens to get green card |
| Re: FUD Cracks Down On Lecturers Who Absconded After Sponsored Programs by thesicilian: 8:23pm On Jun 26 |
There should be a way to get them repatriated to face punishment if they were sponsored abroad, and if their training was in Nigeria they should be sued immediately. It's behaviours like this that makes it difficult for others to receive similar benefits. |

Trusting a Nigerian man is the hardest thing. Anything you're doing for a Nigerian, don't expect anything in return in advance if you want peace. |

Lol. They sponsor them abroad for programs and they absconded and refused to come back. This is what happens when one's country of origin fails to provide a livable atmosphere for her citizens. However, what they did was wrong. There is an agreement before you were sent abroad. It's reasonable you return to fullfil the agreement so that if you later want to leave, you resign. |
