The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission says Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) generated N203.61 billion from electricity consumers in April.

The commission disclosed this in its Commercial Performance Factsheet for April, published on its X handle on Tuesday.

The factsheet showed that the 11 DisCos collected N203.61 billion out of total billings of N252.43 billion during the month under review.

“Collection efficiency recorded an increase to 80.66 per cent, resulting in total revenue collection of N203.61 billion for the month,” it stated.

According to the report, the DisCos received electricity worth N302.96 billion and billed customers N252.43 billion, out of which N203.61 billion was collected.

It stated that the collection translated to a collection efficiency of 80.66 per cent, up by 1.07 percentage points from the previous month.

The report added that the billing efficiency stood at 83.32 per cent, representing a slight decline of 0.57 percentage point from the previous month.

It further stated that the industry’s revenue recovery efficiency stood at 82.11 per cent, with an average actual collection of N102.13 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), compared to the allowed average tariff of N124.39/kWh.

The report listed Eko DisCo (102.09 per cent), Abuja DisCo (89.77 per cent) and Ikeja DisCo (88.89 per cent) as the top performers in revenue recovery efficiency for April.

According to the factsheet, these DisCos recorded the highest recovery efficiency levels during the month.

Meanwhile the actual cost needed to fix power supply would be 5 billion dollars yearly if we want the sector fixed in 20 years, 10 billion dollars yearly if we need it to be fixed in 10 years.

Most of these discos are making money from blackout. That's why they are reluctant to give prepaid meters to their customers.

1. GENCOS collectively need 5.6-6.5 billion naira a day to settle gas costs. That amounts to, in one month, 195 billion naira.

2. Again, the amount made for April 2026 was...201 billion naira.

3. Assuming DISCOS remitted all their money to the gencos for them to pay for the gas, that means....that there would be 6 billion naira left over.

4. So, many GENCOS do not pay for the gas they use because monies remitted from the DISCOS are not going to be enough to pay for all the gas...so debt accumulates.

Infact GENCOS had a shortfall of 200 billion naira monthly in 2025.


There is a good reason why Prof Nnaji called for cost reflective tarrifs in 2025.

Some olodo will think and conclude this is a lot of money to distribution companies without putting into consideration cost of gas, infrastructure and overhead costs.

Im more curious about the money consumers owe, especially those of them on postpaid. I know Nigerians, many of us, have a very strong sense of entitlement. We believe everything should be given to us, for free.

That's the amount that enter official coffers. The other one pass this figure.

The fact is that the leakages are much. Some lost through those who bypass their meters (more than 80%) and collection's filtering into private pockets. If it were possible to check these illegalities, they will realize almost a trillion monthly.

A DISCO that is serious will give all customers prepaid meter.

But they know they generate a significant revenue from estimated billing from blackout supplied.

Myopic to look at the population, you should focus on the output in the national grid.

I always use telecoms as an example
MTN was bleeding the land dry until Glo came along yet NIGERIANS paid the exorbitant fees they demanded
Like someone said right now people collude with corrupt staff of the said Discos to bypass meters so why won't revenue be short.
Hope you saw the uproar when telcos canceled their airtime loans?
That's what would happen when DISCOS join the 21st century and stop lying to themselves

Well, I have told you the truth

Also, even with prepaid meters, bypass rates reach 60%, as at 2024. It is not just to give prepaid meters, but to enforce rules against power theft....which makes life difficult for everyone.

Well, all I have said is the truth, and most of the information is publicly available.

A cost reflective tarrif would encourage more investment, and more revenue, and make things better for everyone.

What government is doing is killing the electricity subsector, and making life worse for everyone including the poor, by not allowing cost reflective tarrifs, enforcing metering, AND...crucially...forcing people who do not pay, to pay.

Well, here is the issue

GENCOS Need about 195-200 billion naira alone monthly to pay for the gas they get. That means that if GENCOS took all the revenue earned by the discos and paid off their gas costs, there would just be 1-6 bn naira left.

Salaries, wages, pensions, taxes, etc have to be paid, as do maintenance costs, and so forth.

The money looks like it is enough, but once the costs for XYZ are deducted, it looks like chicken feed

Then gas companies charge in dollars. DOLLARS.
