1988 Article About Homosexual Prostitutes In Kano (Throwback) by BlackViper(op): 11:00am On Jul 02
Throwback: See 1988 Article About Homosexual Prostitutes In Kano

In the Sabon-Gari area of Kano are four streets: Abadie, Freetown, Santgiwa and Weatherhead. Apart from Weatherhead which is about 600 metres away, the three other streets are adjacent to each other. One common feature of these four streets is the proliferation of dingy hotels and brothels.

This is a Kano red area which is different from red areas all over the world in one unique feature. The prostitutes with light make-up, feminine-looking clothes and who effect feminine voices are males.

They are the dan-daodus, who, unlike regular homosexuals, peddle their male flesh, not for fun, but for cash.

And every evening these streets are filled with different cars coming to pick a dan-daodu or a girl, depending on the patron’s tastes or choice.

Dan-daodu is an Hausa name for homosexual.

This is a trade or profession practised by young men between the ages of 14 and above. There are two categories: Those who pay ₦10.00 for a small room per day in a hotel or rent a room among innocent tenants. And there are others who come from their homes to this area from 6.00 p.m. hanging around for prospective customers. And even those in hotels or rented houses are not allowed to perpetrate their act in their rooms, thus a customer has to take his ‘dan-daodu’ to his own rented accommodation or home.

Also there are times when ‘dan-daodus’ don’t have customers and on such occasions they resort to acting as intermediary for men who want girls and since they (dan-daodus) know these girls, they easily persuade such girls to follow the men after collecting their commission on the deal which ranges from ₦5.00 — ₦10.00 depending on their influence on the girl.

Prime People kept vigil for
three nights to study their modus
operandi before this reporter
later talked to some of them.
Most of them agreed that they
came into the business because
of poverty and others because of interest which they developed from information earlier gotten on this act.

For example, Taula agreed to follow this reporter who posed as a customer after so many meetings (dan-daodus don't normally follow a stranger except those they've known or those they had seen with other dan-daodus) to his hotel room on an agreed fee of ₦40.00 a night which was paid before leaving his rented hotel room. And so we set off but since I didn't know how to go about it I told my guide and interpreter to tell Taula that I needed to be taught the act first before I could do it properly.

Before Taula started 'working' on me while my guide waited outside the door, he agreed to relate how he became a dan-daodu.

According to him ... "I came into this pofession sometime in 1987 after leaving my trading business and ever since I've been making nothing less than ₦100.00 on the average, daily." His customers are mainly rich men with Merçedes Benz who pay higher. than people like you," referring to the amount I paid for his service.

And when asked how much these rich men pay he said "some pay ₦100.00 — ₦400.00 a night since they know the gain in form of business yields."

But do you enjoy it? "Haba! If I no enjoy am how I go do am? I enjoy it more than eight years ago when I used to have fun with women and because of this I don't regret my inability to have fun with girls or bear children in life."

As to what it takes to be a 'dan-daodu' this reporter was told by other dan-daodus, as was buttressed by Taula, that all one needs to do is to first start by soliciting girls for men who need them and in this process men interested in men get to know one, before inviting one to do it with them; though initially some wouldn't lose his manhood, immediately one does it with a man who intends to use one's sperm-duct for his business to flourish, one ceases to be a man again.

I have so many questions after reading this article. For example, what do the two quoted statements below actually mean?

some pay ₦100.00 — ₦400.00 a night since they know the gain in form of business yields
immediately one does it with a man who intends to use one's sperm-duct for his business to flourish, one ceases to be a man again
I've also heard that the Hisbah who enforce Sharia law typically target bars and restaurants in these areas of Kano for selling alcohol, but rather curiously they have a habit of leaving these dan daudus alone. How true is this?
Re: 1988 Article About Homosexual Prostitutes In Kano (Throwback) by Sheuns(m):
Dan Daudus still exist till today.

I was privileged to see a few in Daura during my service year.

This was my biggest cultural shock in the north

Funny thing they see it as normal and different from being gay

Can’t explain the idea it’s weird sha

I have no problem with anyone being gay but don’t involve underage that’s just my issue

Everyone deserve to be loved and love who they want as long as. It’s mutual and both are adults

…and somehow they’ll look at men from other regions as infidels. Islam tolerates such as well as our indigenous culture. Noise regarding attacks on gays started in 2015 — all for political benefit. Since Jonathan left office, attack a homosexual, let he/she report you. What the police will do with you will remain between you and God.

The very Day I see a Male Dog knacking another Male Dog....

Then I will start to understand a Man sleeping with another Man...

Any Man that is sleeping with another Man is lesser than a Goat or a Dog...

Goat and Dog get sense pass that person...

Okay, let's start with the history of Nigeria and the gays

The first time the gay thing entered Nigerian discourse was the 1998 Lambeth conference of the Anglican church where there were issues between developed and developing countries over gay issues. It got worse in 2003, when a gay bishop was chosen in the American anglican church...and then Obama travelled to Africa in 2012 and was lecturing the Senegal president in 2012 about gay rights..and the Senegal president told him no.

It got more intense, as most African coutnries began passing laws against gay rights from 2013-14. The GEJ government even passed a law which was voted for unaminously in the National Assembly...against Gay marriage

(Modifed..about the above law, there were moves to prevent it from being passed. QUiet moves, until one gay rights activist from the UK..very prominent, landed and began shouting up and down that Nigeria was a bad nation for hating gays. That scattered the quiet moves...)

Gay things did not play much of a role in 2015. Though both sides accused the other of being pro-gay.

As for dandauras...that it happens does not mean it is tolerated or wanted. They operate at night, not in the day.

Islam doesn't support homosexuality. That's just the injustice done by the Northerners.

Islam is free of their injustice.

Islam prescribes a very harsh punishment for whoever is caught in the act.

Gbamsulotey, good observation, kudos to you cool

@ Topic, l know all this street in Kano, when I was still working in Kano but I don't know if they still practice this kind of gay stuff their.

Although, all of Sabon gari or most of the streets located in Sabon gari are homes to women and men of easy virtues and also it is the most concentrated part where you see Non indegene live

Due to the series of riots in Kano, right from the Maitasini riots/ Reharnd Bonke riots, Sabon gari becomes one of the safest places to reside in Kano

The last place l lived in Kano before l left the country was very close to STATE CID in Bompai and it was a good area ooooooooo mucheche 😂

The colonial masters brought the rubbish to the Northern Nigeria.
It predates the colonial times, heck it even goes back to long before Islam came to Kano.

(Keep in mind that I am discussing history, I am not here to attack anybody's tribe or religion).

A lot of tribes in subsaharan Africa did do 'a bit of gay'. It does not mean it was acceptable...but it happened.(and it wasn't acceptable in the vast majority of tribes)

If anything, the colonial masters brought in laws that codified homo behaviour as criminal activity...our current law is descended from English laws against 'sodo..my' in the 19th century.

When you try your best to stop a habit ,instead of seeking external help, you accept the habit.
In a bid to justify the habit, you start defending it and if you are wealthy, you join humongous funds with your fellow comrades in the act to propagate this habit through schools, films and media outlets.
You also install your elements in political positions in order to drive your shameless agenda.
You even go to the point of demanding a day for such gathering and to make matters worse, you decide to insert it into sports esp soccer,in a bid to shove it down the throat of everyone!
That's the summary of LGBTQIA+
