MTN Nigeria CEO Appeals for Calm Amid South Africa Xenophobia Backlash

MTN Nigeria's CEO has urged Nigerians not to direct their anger at the company over renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The appeal comes as public frustration grows over reports involving African migrants, including Nigerians. The company says it should not be held responsible for actions outside its control and is calling for understanding during a period of heightened tensions.

The development has sparked widespread debate over business responsibility, diplomacy, and regional unity.

Xenophobia: MTN Nigeria belongs to Nigerians, not South Africa alone — Toriola

Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has declared that MTN Nigeria is “a Nigerian company through and through,” stressing that the telecom giant belongs as much to Nigerians as it does to its global investors, with over 11 million Nigerians indirectly owning stakes in the company through pension fund investments.

Focusing on MTN Nigeria, Toriola said the company has become deeply rooted in the country’s economy.
“MTN Nigeria is a Nigerian company through and through. We are domiciled in Nigeria. We are listed on the Nigerian Exchange. We pay all the taxes, duties and levies expected of us, and we are run by Nigerians.

“I am Nigerian. Apart from one executive, every member of our executive committee is Nigerian, while our entire expatriate workforce in Nigeria is just four people.

“We have over 201,000 retail investors, while about 11 million Nigerians own MTN shares indirectly through pension funds. We are very proud of our Nigerian identity,” he stated.

Corruption in Nigeria is not worst than anywhere else. If you are not aware, many countries around the world are trying to insult Nigeria and this your talk is not helping. The days of blindly insulting ourselves is over.

Anyone saying Nigeria should take over MTN and nationalise it or force the sale of the company to a Nigerian should not forget that we have a purely Nigerian company in the Telecoms sector as well. A company that prefers spending money on celebrities than improving its quality of service. That company is Glo. Can we confidently say Glo can be as reliable as MTN?

We are not heartless like some of your people. Pun intended

South Africans are already reaping the consequences of their actions. Those local shops are mostly operated by the African migrants. Would you go to a big mall or mart to buy ordinary a salt, milk or Sugar ?

MTN is a privately-owned business. How can it be held accountable for the wrongdoing of the Citizens of a nation it is linked to ?

This is crude and no different to demanding innocent children be punished and jailed for the sins of their parents.

It is the Nigerian Government that must take the lead and cut off trade ties with South Africa if they are serious and not about playing to the gallery alone and empty sabre rattling.

In as much as I do not like what those south Africans are doing to nigerians and other blacks

Going against MTN may not be good for us...how many Nigerian telcom companies compete and provide services comparable to what mtn is providing.
The massive corruption in the country would not let nationalising it to work

We can work against DSTV because those ones have not hidden their exploitative tendencies from the beginning

But for me, leave mtn alone

I had a glo line and I had to drop it because service was poor. Instead of improving services, they would rather pay influences to advertise. A good brand speaks for itself

So would you rather I do not get value for money with it affecting my life negatively in the name of growing naija?

Your submission is not valid sad
Chelsea FC was owned by individual who eventually got punished by the UK government just because he's a Russian.

Corruption in Nigeria is worse and witchcrafty...

Your kind who failed to call out leaders for what they are, are the ones enabling them and their corruption - possibly because you are feeding from the crumbs.

You don't need to worry, Nigerians can never be united enough to boycott your products and services.
South Africans are not different from Nigerians. We've seen countless times when Nigerians will tell other Nigerians to go back to their states, we've seen Nigerians stop other Nigerians from voting in elections.
We've seen government officials shamelessly engage in tribal bigotry.

South Africans are even better than Nigerians cos they target foreigners while Nigerians target their follow country men and women

He is right. People shoukd not destroy great company like MTN because of some irrational devious of black South Africans.

The best possible is for government to nationalise MTN. And that will be a very far reaching decision.

You are calling him part of the problem, what about Glo network that can frustrate business with ease??.
