No fewer than 10 persons lost their lives, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road crash involving a truck and a commercial bus at Sapade Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun Sector Command, disclosed that the fatal crash occurred at about 8:05 p.m. and involved a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) Dangote truck with an unknown registration number and a white Toyota Hiace bus marked EKY 290 YM.

According to a statement issued by the Public Education Officer of the Ogun Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, on behalf of the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, and made available to journalists by the command's spokesperson, a total of 18 persons were involved in the crash.

Odunsi stated that the victims comprised 15 adult males, two adult females and one male child.
He said 10 persons, including nine adult males and one male child, died in the crash, while six others comprising four adult males and two adult females sustained injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt.

The FRSC spokesperson attributed the crash to excessive speed, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.

According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the truck driver allegedly reversed on the highway after missing his route, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to manoeuvre through the limited space and rammed into the truck.

"The crash was caused by speed violation, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving. The truck driver reportedly reversed on the highway after missing his direction, while the bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to pass through the available space and collided with the truck," he said.

Odunsi disclosed that FRSC rescue teams responded promptly by evacuating the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

He added that officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ishara Division had taken custody of the crashed vehicles, while arrangements had been concluded for their evacuation from the scene. He noted that normal traffic had since been restored along the route.

The spokesperson quoted the Sector Commander, Ogunjobi, as commiserating with the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

He also cautioned motorists, particularly commercial drivers and truck operators, against reversing on highways, speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic violations capable of causing avoidable loss of lives.

The FRSC urged road users to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and make use of designated turning points whenever they miss their routes, stressing that strict adherence to traffic rules remains the surest way to prevent road crashes.

The stupidity of just one person, a product of our collective carelessness and impunity, led to the death of 10 people. The sad story of a crawling nation that simply refused to stand up and walk 66 years after independence.

Today, being the only day in a long time that I have not heard news of bandits and terrorists killing and kidnapping, what is this one again?

Nigerian roads and lack of functioning street lights. Yet they budget billions and trillions of naira for these road constructions. No road markings, nothing at all.

Trailers and parking on the fast lanes of the road and caring less about other road users.

We have so many unintelligent people living in this country.

That truck driver is likely to have survived the accident. He must be arrested and sent to jail. Why on earth would you reverse on a high way. Knowing other drivers would be coming behind you at full speed.

Condolences to their loved ones. Most of these articulated vehicles don't have light. They parked indiscriminately, but Road safety will do nothing.

Why always this road.. this could be caused by most drivers who takes sachets hot drinks, with agbo and kponmo before hitting the road with their red eyes and overspeeding

The Federal Government should install radar-enforced average speed cameras on all these new Tinubu/Umahi roads. Any smooth road surface is an invitation to speed. It is up to the owners of the road to implement every possible prevention to make them safe for all. This should maintain itself from the accrued fines, hence cost-neutral to the State

Trucks and commercial vehicles should also undergo rigorous safety checks every 6 months.

These are the sort of measures that a responsible and caring government implements everywhere in the world.

It should not be different here.

In all fairness, motorways are usually do not have lights. You said street lights and not expressways lights. Except when it runs through a city or highly dence urban areas
