What majority of them want is just to join politics, nothing else. They have the population to dominate everywhere, but you find them in just politics and military. The few that set apart are doing well tho. It is a mentality thing

u know politics is not merit driven, especially in Nigeria where it is usually heavily rigged. I wont count that as a thing. Everything is rigged, from population to local govt, etc. The foundation was designed by the British. I really want Northerners to compete in Merit driven societies like in Europe or in their Saudi and break global records in medicine, science, tech, marine, etc.

Majority of the kids born in 2000’s in Nigeria, are bearing western names. Some add it when they get to high school. It is very common now

It is even crazy that an ethnic group like Igbos who lost everything in civil war, started afresh, extremely maginalized, still rose to this level in human development, this beats my imagination for an ethnic group from the northern part of Nigeria to not become very competitive after ruling and dominating the entire politics of this country. I really think if u remove north from Nigeria, the country may really grow for real judging from verse human development they have attained in the field of merit and competency.

you are right. You know what is funny, their ladies now take education more serious than the men. Most of the young men in the North just want to make money, and marry plenty wives. I see some of them, I ask questions, and then I found out it is a problem of their demography. Their environment influence their decisions, thinking and prospects to life in general.

The surnames being Western may be a coincidence.

Many Southerners have Western names for various reasons. Like the Brazilians and Sierra Leoneans/Saros/Creoles of Lagos. Remember people like Femi Pedro, Pinheiro, Ajayi Crowther, Mobolaji Johnson, Adeniyi Jones, Herbert Macaulay, Da Costa, etc. Even Gomez is a popular Lagos family. In fact, many changed their surnames to Yoruba over time, otherwise there would be more Western names.

You may remember the royal branch of the Owa Obokun, the Haastrup, currently the Oba of Ijesha in Osun State. The history from prince to slave to Oba is quite well-known. Haastrup upon return from slavery established a large kola nut farm in a part of Lagos to become known as Igbobi. You have the Orthopaedic Hospital there today.

In Igbo land, due to Catholicism, many people are named after saints, popes, doctors of the church, etc. Like Anacletus/Cletus, Boniface, Gregory, Benedict, Innocent, John, Clement, etc.

In Niger Delta, Europeans wrote down native names the way it would be easy for them to pronounce or relate to. A name like Horsfall. If a local ruler was under another king, they wrote down his name as Duke, being a ruler lesser than a king. With baptism, people got fancy English names too. Soon, local traditional names were being given in English equivalent like Fineface, Strongbone, Godsgift, Government, Company, Manager, Wiseman (like a king's or duke's adviser), Soldier, Happy, Patience, Warrior, etc. Imagine writing Akin, Balogun, Akogun and others in English.

Even Oba Dosunmu in Lagos was written as Docemo in the British-Lagos agreement ceding Lagos to Queen Victoria in mid-19th century. There is Docemo Street in Lagos till today.

Rhodes-Vivour came under focus due to politics in recent years.

Our interactions with Europeans have left lasting marks on us, including family history and names.

The quarter system instead of helping them, destroyed them by creating a sense of entitlement. You can't go to any private sector and see northern presence. You only find such in government. That's why they're so afraid of anything that will break this country, when they speak of unity it's not because they love Nigeria so much but because it's a place where they gather to eat free meal. And I'm talking about northern elites not the entire north
