The Kebbi State Government has concluded plans to sponsor 300 couples in the third edition of its mass wedding programme.

Chairman of the Mass Wedding Committee, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists in Birnin Kebbi.

He said the beneficiaries were selected from the state’s 21 local government areas and 225 wards following a screening process.

Argungu said the programme, organised by the state government in partnership with the foundation of the governor’s wife, is open to all eligible indigenes, regardless of ethnic or religious background.

He said each groom would receive N250,000 as dowry in line with Islamic law, while all intending couples would undergo compulsory medical screening to determine their health status and compatibility.

According to him, local government committees have also been directed to verify that each groom has a reliable source of income to support his family.

The wedding ceremony will take place in Birnin Kebbi in the presence of Governor Nasir Idris, Islamic clerics and other dignitaries.

Argungu said the governor’s wife’s NANAS Foundation would provide beds, mattresses, food items and other household essentials to help the couples begin married life.

He added that a monitoring committee had been set up to monitor the welfare of the couples after the wedding and ensure the proper use of the items provided.

Of course, let's recruit more people to multiply the number of untrained, unschooled, under-parented kids in the streets.

Who do us this thing? Can a governor be so bereft of brains to setup a more useful initiative to help SMEs in the state but see sponsoring mass weddings as a state responsibility.

The governor of Kebbi state, Nasir Idris, being a former National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, should include free and compulsory education and/or vocational skill acquisition for the expected children of the sponsored couples, to stem the tide of increasing number of out-of-school children, roaming the streets.

what's the purpose of this mass wedding self if not waste of time and resources.....if they aren't useful to the society pack them and put into the army instead of creating more problems population wise.

Only thing the North understands, procreation!
The mumu couples will be happy, whereas it's an investment for the rich elites.
More out of school population of almajiris they whose population they will use to sway election numbers towards the North in the future.
Until people open their eyes and wake up from stupidity, the rich will keep getting richer.

If you mean that government should just sit down and give everyone job without any provision for what they would do in the government job, that's even worse than mass marriage, and another road to debt and more debt.

What crops do you want them to plant? How many of them would be trained to work in the farm? Who would provide the seed money, and how would the markets for the farm product be developed.

Most regions and states did the same thing, and at the end of the day, they all crashed.

This is where Boko Haram and banditry started. After the Governor's wife has provided the couples with beds, mattresses, food items, and other household essentials to help them begin married life, the couples will then give birth to children they can't take care of because they are jobless and poor. The children will first be recruited into the Almajiri system, from where some of them either become mai bara, bike riders, while the bulk of them join religious hardliners and banditry.
