In Nigeria, VAT is a centralized consumption tax. Companies collect and remit it to the tax authorities, but revenues are pooled at the national level and distributed to the three tiers of government.
Following recent tax reforms by the Tinubu government, the Federal Government portion of total distributable VAT was reduced to 10%.

How Remittances Work

1. Collection by FIRS/NRS: Registered businesses collect 7.5% VAT on taxable goods and services and remit it to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

2. Once the gross VAT is collected and statutory deductions (like the cost of collection) are made, the net distributable VAT is shared among the 3 tiers of government at the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Under the revised tax sharing formula:

Federal Government: Receives 10%
State Governments (including the FCT): Receive 55%
Local Government Councils: Receive 35%
Re: VAT Generated By Nigeria’s States And The FCT In H1 2026 - The Cable by leanonme82(op):
VAT is increasingly making up a significant portion of the nations FAAC.

Value Added Tax (VAT) typically makes up roughly 25% to 35% of the total distributable Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue in Nigeria.

For example, in the June 2026 FAAC distribution, VAT accounted for about 29% of the total shared pool, generating ₦740.72 billion out of a total distributable revenue of ₦2.550 trillion.

Abia ranks last in VAT generation among the 36 states + FCT? Meanwhile, war-ravaged Borno generates more VAT than Anambra and Enugu combined and even surpasses the combined total of Imo, Enugu and Abia.

Some figures have a way of exposing narratives more effectively than arguments ever could. I'll leave it there, because the moment I dissect these VAT numbers, one overzealous mod will ban me and it will appear as if it is bot.

VAT from Abia the least out of 36 states + FCT? And worn-torn Borno raking in more than Anambra and Enugu combined? And indeed, more than Imo, Enugu and Abia combined?
There's hardly any production in the SE .

That place is dead .

Did you notice that Oyo State alone generates almost three times the VAT of the entire SE? It's fascinating how numbers can quietly dismantle the loudest narratives. Facts have no emotions, no loyalties and no political affiliations, they simply exist. Lagos is not even in this league.

I've noticed that the use of the word "parasites" to describe some states and regions has diminished remarkably. Could it be because figures are not cooperating with that narrative? Statistics have an inconvenient habit of exposing lies.

There's hardly any real production going on in the SE

If north can develop a support agri industry that will add value to their raw agricultural output, then every single northern state will dwarf the entire SE combined.

There's nothing in the SE.

Its good to see Awolowos industrial estates in ibadan and ikeja, which attracted big industries & companies to those states, set a good industrial foundation for Lagos and Oyo states.

That is legacy.

VAT is not an achievement.

If i tax Dangote 5 naira for a cup of garri, = VAT N5
If i tax Dangote 1 naira for a cup of garri, = VAT N1

It does not mean that Dangote or the environment has become richer or poorer.

The figures could be very real, because Southeast states tax low. Obi is famous for reducing all taxes in Anambra and still having surplus.

VAT is the same everywhere. Its federal. States cant tax low.
It just means you don't have many production/service companies in the SE.

If VAT is not an achievement, having crude oil is far worse niyen and US will be where Abia state is today.

2 Things Need To Be Done:

1. Ensure VAT is paid at the point of consumption which means businesses pay VAT in the various states they’re located.

2. Share VAT at the same formula with oil and gas revenue sharing formula.

This makes it fair for everyone until a time when Nigeria is ready to review formula for all revenue distribution

Who told you obi reduced VAT in Anambra state?
Which state governor has the power to reduce VAT?
Obi didn't reduce VAT, he was only unable to generate enough taxes during his tenure as governor.

If there is no enabling environment for people to do business, government will struggle to make money through VAT

You can't make much money by taxing shops, you make more money by taxing business and companies.

In the proposed regional integration governments. SW, SS, would be leading in economy. Igbos should see how to stop developing other' s regions. The North should invest more on manpower to drive their economy rather than producing jihadists. The regions will implode by the time their youths see others developing, they will be asking questions.
Ekiti should buckle up. I see Awolowo's programme awakening up to SW. SS and their oil could be a problem to them. Oil is supposed to be a blessing but most oil rich countries relax and depend on oil. For instance, Dubai is not depending on oil, in fact, oil contributes less than 1% of her GDP. Middle Belt is a bouyant zone if Islam would not further destroy it with corruption.

VAT and production related directly?
Typical of Tinubu supporter
The location of VAT collected at the point of production instead of consumption can not be accurately determined, hence, the data you are seeing here

"Hunger is the most honest measure of economic performance because it cannot be manipulated not VAT paper statistics. Until fewer Nigerians go to bed hungry, until poverty begins to fall instead of rise, and until every Nigerian family especially in the alleged highly VAT collected states can once again afford three decent meals a day and stop the embarrassing public begging and constituting nuisance, every claim of economic success through high VAT collection will remain unrecognisable to the people whose lives those statistics are supposed to improve,”

Epitome of ignorance.

VAT is consumption tax, not production tax.

A wise man knows that a region that is the poorest will consume less products than others.

There is no real list of VAT collection by states in Nigeria because most of the VAT are not collected at point of sale.

By your own definition of VAT as a measure of consumption and not production, which is correct, and using the emboldened, you've confirmed that Oyo is three times richer than the entire SE. By the same logic, Abia ranks as Nigeria's poorest state, while Borno surpasses Anambra and Enugu combined, and even outperforms Imo, Enugu, and Abia together.

In Nigeria, VAT is collected at source of production and not at point of sale.

This is what the Tinubu tax reform bill was to address but you all rejected it.

Now admire your own ignorance by looking in the mirror.

Production companies are even exempted from paying VAT, VAT only applies at consumers level. Luckily for them the less it's being collected from your state, the lesser you get.
