Abegi ... I served (NYSC) in Bauchi State. I was staying in the Rukuba or so Barracks. Muslims should stop deceiving themselves with these outwards showing of holiness.
Youth Corpers use to do the do with these "niqua and hijab" girls. Most of them wear beads to "prevent " pregnancy.

You mean wearing veil is not part of civilization?

Do you say this when you meet a nun?
nuns leave their entire face open, not closed up like masquerade

The emergence of Obidients brought so much religious intolerance, especially towards Islam

Unfortunately, she stood out as the odd one in the midst. Actually looks like a masquerade in the midst of the other youngsters. Maybe if there were several other masked people in the picture it would have made things blend and not look odd.

It takes bravery to stand out like that. I feel for her though. Congrats to her. Her win is more important.

By the way, I won't have noticed that she had originally appeared in a mask except that you brought it here to make a topic. So you are the one who is making it a topic of discussion.
Masquerade?

That's her belief!

What can you say about some people going to worship the lord, but they must not put on footwear
What of those that mustn't use earrings

You won't say about some that dress half-baked. Some miniskirt

She's not a masquerade
Respect her belief

She's too young to be put in a niqab, her parents should have allowed her make that decision on her own when she becomes an adult.
But those who wear miniskirts are not too young?

Are the way people dress to school part of our cultural dressings in Nigeria or they were forced on us ?

I am a Muslim. You don't force people people to wear it
okrikaboi:
Let her he honest, does she enjoy wearing it or is it forced on her by her parents and a religion where she has no choice because she was born into it.

very good question, is she wearing it by choice or by family pressure
We're way you dressed in your primary till secondary schools our choices or were forced on your parents by the western people?

It's high time we also dressed the way our culture allows

I didn't call her that. I only said it looked like. And I'm not comparing appearances. Non of the others looked like the descriptions you gave. I didn't see someone on bare foot or half naked.

You sound offended. And already going off context.
I didn't mean to offend.

Nigeria should be celebrating excellence today.

Four brilliant Nigerian students represented our country at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China and returned home with the Gold Award in the Middle School category. Every Nigerian, regardless of religion or ethnicity, should be proud of this achievement.

One of these outstanding students is Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International Schools, Ilorin.

However, instead of simply celebrating her success, a disturbing issue has emerged.

The original team photograph shows Maryam wearing her niqab, as she represented Nigeria on the international stage. Yet, the image published by Vanguard appears to show a different version in which her niqab is no longer present.

If this alteration was indeed made deliberately, then several questions deserve answers.

Why alter the appearance of a young Nigerian simply because she wears a niqab?

Who authorised the alteration?

Why should a Muslim student's religious identity be digitally changed before the public can see her?

The organisers of the international competition had no issue with her appearance. She competed, excelled, and helped Nigeria win while dressed exactly as she chose. If the world could respect her identity, why should a Nigerian media organisation fail to do the same?

This is not merely about a photograph. It is about respect, representation, and the right of every Nigerian to be portrayed truthfully.

Whether one agrees with wearing the niqab or not is beside the point. Journalism is expected to report facts, not alter a person's appearance in a way that changes who they are.

If Vanguard did not make this alteration, then it should publicly explain the source of the image it used. If it did, it owes Maryam Yusuf, her family, her school, and the Nigerian public an explanation.

We should be celebrating a young girl who has made Nigeria proud, not discussing why her religious identity appears to have been edited out of a published photograph.

Congratulations to Maryam Yusuf and the entire Nigerian team for bringing honour to our country.

May truth, fairness, and respect prevail over prejudice.
Did you take your time to look at the 2 pictures closely?

Have you tried to find out why there are 2 versions of the picture?

The question you should have asked first if the face of the girl is her actual identity, if it is then you shoukd observe the 2 pictures closely, you can see the first one with the veil, her hands are folded holding the flag of Nigeria wrapped around her.

The second picture without the veil shows her hands down..

Isn't it obvious the picture was snapped twice, Vanguard may have only picked the one without the veil believing they should not do a disservice to her by picking the one her face did not show.

For her to open her face to take that picture, it meant she wanted to be seen and have a pictured memory of evidence she can keep for future.

Imagine going to such a competition that is not an everyday thing and won gold only to take picture without having your face shown and you can't even present it to future generation that you were the one behind the veil except for your name which other people can also bear, but they cannot bear your face.

Do you people really sit down to ask yourselves logical questions?

You people just look at everything from religious lens, If it is her face that is shown there, I can tell you most likely that Vanguard believed they were doing her a favour by revealing the version that showed her face to the world...

You people see everything as attack on Islam...

Thanks so much

What I mean is that, that's her belief
Some people believe not to put on footwear when going for service etc

The world didn't force her to remove it, then why did the news editor use AI to change her appearance?

How is that your little headache, why not respect her parents parenting. If you have your own, strip her naked from birth and let her dress as she wishes

You know it's funny when Muslims talk about how they don't support any naked outings?... One will think so highly of you guys, but when you look deep into your religion, you eventually realize it's all façade.

Jokes on you guys!

i think they should be a uniform of dress code when representing countries, especially one like Nigeria. so that such platforms should not be used to promote religion.
