Picture 1 - Some of the first set of NAF flight cadets after a class session at Uetersen Air Base, Germany in April 1964.

Starting from the 2nd to the left is Group Captain RO Okafor, Air Marshall Ibrahim Alfa (Former Chief of Air Staff 1984-1990), AVM W Ozah, Mr Emma Ogosi, Capt D Aiyelagbe. At the rear in-between Okafor and Alfa is AVM U Muazu.

In-between Alfa and Ozah is AVM Mukhtar Mohammed. In between Ogosi and Aiyelagbe is AVM CU Ugah and in-between Aiyelagbe and German instructor is Air Commodore BN Banfa.The cadet at the end is Group Captain HZ Aziz.

A 1971 picture of the first set of pilots trained in Nigeria. They were the first pilots who were trained from initial phase flying Piaggio P.149D to flying the L-29 jet trainer.
Standing from the left is : late AVM Emmanuel Edem, late Air Marshall Nsikak Edouk (former CAS), after the white man is late Wing Commander Ben Ekele, late Air Commodore O Agbebi

Wing Commander John Uku, AVM Emmanuel Ombu, late AVM Idi Musa.

If you like train on the moon, as long as the army functions for a clique thats tribal at the apex, it is hogwash.

Germany was instrumental in the early formations and training days of the NAF just as India and British played in the case of the Nigerian Army and Navy respectively.

I am dead sure that after the programmes, the officers would be rushing back to Nigeria because of how good and comfortable life was then in the country.

If this happens again in this generation, their case will be worse than those Ethiopian footballers who absconded

Ben was a Bad ass fighter pilot, never knew he married, since he was the only child of his parents. A great Man from Inye, Kogi state. Growing up we heard tales of his legendary exploits. He remains de only pilot who flew under Makurdi bridge with his jet, was told that whenever he flew past his father's compound in the village, he executed a perfect formation roll maneuver 8times! Kai! IBB killed a legendary pilot. We will never have another Ben Ekele.

He was the best fighter pilot Nigeria had at that time. He went to Russia when they were inspecting a jet, and he flew the jet and did a manoeuvre that even the Russian pilots were unable to execute.
