It's rainy season, the water level at kainji dam is bigger now; consequently, the generators are producing power.

By February, March, April the reverse occurs, then you start seeing:
1. Thermal stations are not getting paid
2. Gas supply is not enough.
Etc..

Electricity is always improve the way they share it during raining season compared to the dry season.. am not surprised at all

Because when dry season comes again, many areas will suffer again. Until this continues during the dry season, only then can I say oh electricity has improved

This is raining season! Electricity is always good at this time. Wait till when the dam dries again and come back to this your post

In my Area in port Harcourt, it moves from slightly average to worst. Now we can stay for days without light and no any explanation from PHED

Wait till the rain season is over. You'll create another thread crying about the epileptic power supply in your area.

Na today?
This idea that power supply is more stable or increases during the rainy season is ancient thinking. Most of our power comes from gas not hydro. If anything you are more likely to experience power cuts in the rainy season especially in Lagos where sometimes it is deliberately switched off during heavy rain to prevent damage to their equipment.

1. On the thermal stations not getting paid, the problem is government is not paying the subsidy it is supposed to be paying, and the discos cannot raise enough money from the consumer because of crippling subsides and price controls that force them to operate at a loss

2. Gas companies refuse therefore to supply enough gas.

1. Electricity supply is worse in my area.
2. ELectrricity is not going to get better in nigeria until we stop lying to ourselves, and force the government to remove subsidy and charge a cost reflective tarrif.

Right now, discos are collecting money from 82% of consumers. Keep that in mind.

In April this year, discos were supposed to distribute 330 billion naira of electrcity. To pay for that, they could only raise 206 billion naira from consumers.

IN May this year, they were supposed to distribute electricity worth 328 billion niara, and to pay for that they could only raise 208 billion naira from consumers

Which is what you expect when most consumers are paying subsidised bills that are way below what the discos need to maintain a profitable enough state to stay afloat and pay for electricity they distribute.

But with figures like the above, discos are

1. Forced to underpay gencos
2. Forced to reject power from gencos
3. There is no money to invest in improving generation and distribution...who go invest in a sector that is forced by government policy to sell at a loss.
4. The result is that discos and gencos cannot improve power supply.
5. Forget about the Siemenes project, it's meant to reduce losses on the grid. At best it can get us up to 13000 mw , which still is not enough.

What nigeria needs now is
1. 32000MW to power everyone on the grid.
2. 88000 or more MW to give EVERY HOUSEHOLD...Light 24/7. in nigeria.

You cannot do that without charging cost reflective tarrifs. Anything else na wishful thinking.

AM sorry, but until government meters everyone, allows the discos set the price, meaning we all pay at least 250 naira per kwh, get everyone metered, and get the government to punish power theft (yes, I know, effed up, yes, corruption, yes, Tinubu is like Satan and must be removed by Angel Jubril tomorrow at 10 am , yes black man knows how to oppress other black man, and we are deficient compared to the whites).....to guarantee eventual increased investment, increased generation, better transmission and distribution, and to stop spending money on generator and solar panels...and so forth. And to eventually spend less on power.

Band A is just an exercise in self deceit. 20% of consumers paying cost reflective tarrifs cannot yield enough revenue to pay for the rest of the country.

Yes, there is corruption in the sector. I do not deny it. But remove subsidy to day, allow cost reflective tarrifs, and all those power companues would not be corrupt because they would be forced to work for every kobo , and every naira, to improve service and attract investment.

Abusing me and calling me tinubu supporter shows that you believe that government should set the prices of businesses and producers to help NIgerians. That's a wack type of business thinking, and one which leads to more and more debt.
What has Discos collecting 80% of their money from customers got to do with the government or subsidy? Should the government help discos to collect their own money? Is it the responsibility of the government to meter everybody?Have discos been able to meet up with the minimum 20hrs of electricity daily to those that are already paying cost reflective tariffs? Your electricity related post are always lop sided and irritating.

Nobody is buying this bullshit, the same optics every year... you better go get something doing. na the same arrangement every year right from Jonathan era... get used to the pattern from April to October the light is better, from November to March it becomes worse.

April to October: Raining season period, water level rises... Our Dam is more functional during this period, so it is complementing the Gas Plant turbine used for generation. This period you tend to witness more power generation

November to March: Dry Season and Harmattan period, water level has dropped... Dam is less functional during this period, focus is mainly on Gas plant turbine, this period you witness less power generation which result to Power shedding. Na there you go they hear say Power Grid don collapse due to disturbance. Take note, the power shedding sometimes causes the grid collapse.

If we do not build gas turbine power plants for electricity generation in every state and aggressively develop our gas reserves, we will never get power generation right. I don't even want to delve into nuclear energy—Nigeria as a country is simply not ripe for that.
The fact is, we cannot build more gas turbine plants and so forth because discos are not allowed to operate profitably by charging cost reflective tarrifs for everyone.

Money no dey grow on trees, it comes from profits. A situation where discos raise 208 billon naira from bills and are supposed to pay for electricity worth 328 billion naira (all for one month) is not going to make power supply improve or create profits.

How many times will zone Bees be enlightened that electricity generally improves during the rainy season because the dams work at full capacity to stabilise the grid and thus less reliance on the gas fired turbines?
By November to January your minister will come and explain to you why you're not having electricity don't worry

Skydiv:
What has Discos collecting 80% of their money from customers got to do with the government or subsidy?
Discos revenue is separate from government subsidy payments.

Discos collect monies from 80% of consumers. 20% of these are band A. Bands B-E pay much lower , with government supposed to pay 67% of the actual amount they would have paid if they were band A consumers. But government doesn;t do that

Result is the disaster seen below

The figures show that between April 2025 and April 2026, electricity distribution companies (DisCos) were issued invoices worth N3.16 trillion. Of this amount, the federal government was expected to shoulder N1.86 trillion, representing 58.84 per cent of the total invoices, under the electricity tariff shortfall arrangement.

However, only N76.95 billion was released during the period, translating to a payment rate of just 4.14 per cent, leaving an unpaid subsidy bill of N1.782 trillion
See the wahala.

Add the fact that in May, for example, discos collected 208 billion naira from consumers nationwide. GENCOS GAVE them 328billion naira woth of electricity to distribute naitonwide. NO way discos can pay for that, and pay for all their other costs, including salaries, wages, and maintenance and improvement

TO sum it up

DisCo Financial & Operating Metrics for May 2026
Energy Received: Valued at ₦328.95 billion (an 8.58% increase from April).
Energy Billed: ₦252.87 billion, reflecting a billing efficiency of 76.87% (down 6.45 percentage points month-on-month)
.Revenue Collected: ₦208.15 billion, reflecting a collection efficiency of 82.32% (up 1.66 percentage points).
Tariff Realization: DisCos collected an actual average of ₦96.16/kWh against an allowed average tariff of ₦124.39/kWh.
So, discos underpay. Because they are not able to raise enough money thanks to government forcing them not to do so. I mean you get electricity of 328 billion naira, and somehow you can only raise 208 billion naira which is enough to pay for only part. And the same figures have been repeated month after month.

The same thing happened for the month of April. And this is, note apart from government subsidy obligations

Also, see the average tarrif? It is not up to half of what the actual cost reflective tarrif is.

Add the above 2, see the wahala. Unless discos and gencos have a magic money tree, there is no way they can give optimal service. It's even, again, a miracle they can give some service.

Should the government help discos to collect their own money? Is it the responsibility of the government to meter everybody? Have discos been able to meet up with the minimum 20hrs of electricity daily to those that are already paying cost reflective tariffs?
THe above is why discos and gencos cannot meet up with all that.

Again, you have a situation where price controls means discos cannot pay genco bills in full, and a situaiton where government is paying less than 5% of the subsidy costs it owes in a year.

Under such conditions it would be virtually impossible for any disco or genco to meet customer demand. It's a miracle they are able to do so somehow...even then, bad condtions.

Your electricity related post are always lop sided and irritating.
Well, Ive explained it clearer to you.

But this government encourages looting, since Tinubu became president, which past or present government official has EFCC sent to jail or prosecuted to the very end.

Read this and quickly get off my mention.

Egypt achieved modern power generation reliability through a dramatic transition from severe mid-2010s blackouts to becoming an energy hub. By investing billions to update its infrastructure, the government built three massive 4,800 MW combined-cycle gas plants, while simultaneously incentivizing large-scale solar and wind projects to diversify its energy mix.

I don't think anywhere in my comment expressed support for tinubu looting or tinubu stealing money. I even want APC out, and have never voted for them.

By investing billions to update its infrastructure, the government built three massive 4,800 MW combined-cycle gas plants, while simultaneously incentivizing large-scale solar and wind projects to diversify its energy mix.
FOr NIgeria to do the same we would have to borrow at least N15 trillion naira annually every year for the next ten years. We are not a diversified economy as Egypt is. The problem with your governments is they steal and then they do not raise more money.

Also, Egypt has something we do not have, a diversifed economy, and they are moving to cost reflective tarrifs, because the debt incurred doing all those things you say is a lot , and has to be paid.

(Egypt is also a corrupt country, and has a lot of poor people.).

Also, Egypt had to invest about 19billion dollars over 10 years. Nigeria needs to invest 10-12 billion dollars every year for the next ten to twenty years.

(Egypt has 120 million people to our 237 million tho.)

Also, for your Egypt, I raise you Ivory Coast. They implemented a cost reflective tarrif in 1993, with some mild control by government, but one that does not charge below the cost of production. Result...power supply improved, and things got better

Plus, we should listen to our expoerts like Prof Barth Nnaji

Bart Nnaji, former power minister and chairman Geometric Power, called for more cost-reflective electricity tariff, stressing that the current pricing structure fails to cover the operational and maintenance costs of Power Generation Companies (GenCos), particularly as many critical inputs are imported.
You can abuse Prof now.

Household energy demand generally falls during the rainy season. People use less of thier Airconditioners. Wait till the heat wave comes, without rainfall and peak energy demand and see whether you will see those 20 hours energy supply again.
