Nigeria’s Single-Motherhood Pattern: What the 2021 Data Shows — and Why No South-East State Appears in the Top 12

A 2021 data graphic attributed to StatiSense, based on Nigeria’s Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), highlights substantial differences among states in the proportion of children aged 0–17 living with their mother alone while their father is still alive. The underlying UNICEF/Nigeria MICS data examines children's living arrangements at state level.

The 12 states with the highest percentages

Rank State Percentage

1 Bayelsa 19.0%
2 Cross River 14.4%
3 Edo 14.3%
4 Ekiti 13.7%
5 Ondo 13.5%
6 Delta 12.8%
7 Osun 11.7%
8 Akwa Ibom 10.5%
9 Oyo 9.9%
10 Kogi 9.7%
11 Rivers 9.4%
12 Ogun 8.5%

The striking feature is the regional concentration: six of the 12 states are in the South-South, five are in the South-West, and one is in the North-Central. No South-East state appears in the top 12.

Why is the South-East absent?

The first point is important: the graphic does not prove that South-Eastern states have no single mothers. It only shows that none of the five South-East states made this particular top-12 ranking.

There are several possible explanations, but they should be treated as hypotheses rather than established causes without additional research.

1. Stronger extended-family involvement

One possible factor is the traditional importance of extended-family structures in many South-Eastern communities. Where a father does not live continuously with the mother and children, grandparents, uncles, aunts and other relatives may provide support or accommodation. Consequently, a child may not necessarily be classified as living with the mother alone.

2. Migration and household arrangements

Economic migration can separate parents and children geographically. The MICS data itself demonstrates that children's living arrangements are affected by parents living elsewhere, rather than simply by whether parents are married or divorced.

3. Marriage and family norms

Differences in marriage patterns, family expectations and social attitudes could also influence the proportion of children living with only their mothers. However, it would be inappropriate to conclude from this table alone that one region has "better" families or that another has more irresponsible fathers.

4. The statistic is narrower than the phrase "single mother" suggests

This is perhaps the most important caveat.

The statistic shown is essentially about children living with their mother alone when the father is alive. That is not identical to measuring all single mothers, unmarried mothers, divorced women, widows or separated women.

For example, a child whose father is alive but lives elsewhere may fall into a particular living-arrangement category, while a child whose father has died represents a different category. UNICEF's MICS tables explicitly distinguish these circumstances.

A particularly interesting regional observation

The data becomes more intriguing when viewed geographically.

South-South:
Bayelsa 19%, Cross River 14.4%, Delta 12.8%, Akwa Ibom 10.5%, Rivers 9.4%

South-West:
Edo 14.3%, Ekiti 13.7%, Ondo 13.5%, Osun 11.7%, Oyo 9.9%, Ogun 8.5%

North-Central:
Kogi 9.7%

South-East:
No state in the top 12.

That concentration raises a legitimate sociological question: what distinguishes family and household structures in the South-East from those in the states appearing at the top of this particular indicator?

But the answer cannot responsibly be reduced to culture alone. Household composition is influenced by migration, employment, marriage patterns, economic circumstances, parental residence and extended-family arrangements, among other factors.

One important warning about interpreting the graphic

The image circulating online should not be interpreted as a ranking of "bad mothers," "irresponsible fathers," or the morality of different regions. It is a child living-arrangement statistic.

Indeed, UNICEF's national MICS results show that children's living arrangements vary considerably by factors such as age, urban/rural residence and household characteristics.

The more interesting story is therefore not simply "which state has the most single mothers?" but why children's living arrangements differ so markedly across Nigeria.

Bottom line: Bayelsa stands out at 19%, considerably above the 12th-ranked Ogun at 8.5%. The absence of all five South-East states from the top 12 is notable, but the available table alone cannot establish why. It provides a strong basis for further investigation—not a definitive verdict on regional family culture.

In the South East, it is seen as a proof of irresponsibility to have a child outside wedlock or without proper marriage. In most cases it's a shame for a lady to get pregnant with the dowry not yet paid. That's one of the major reasons why the cases of abandoned babies are very much rampant in the eastern part of Nigeria.

Met a single mother last year, she's from Anambra. She came down here to hustle.
She told me all kind of stories, they were all lies. Anyway, it's the nature of the night hustle

Does Nigeria have good data keeping records if we are to tell the truth? Let’s look at our government institutions which is the yardstick for measuring stability of a country. INEC accepted a secondary school certificate that was of a non existent secondary school from tinubu but today the certificate is no more. Our judiciary ruled in 2023 that not winning Abuja and 2/3 does not matter and shouldn’t stop tinubu including forgery something that had been the law under constitution since 1960 until 2023. WAEC went into their website and failed students from a particular region while upgrading scores of the region of their current benefactor, same thing students from a region being excluded from their so called student loans etc Is it such a government’s’ data ☝️ you are relying on?

Op you did not capture the main reason why Southeast didn't make the top list and I will tell you why.

Southwest have a more liberal approach towards girl child having children in her parents house, they don't see it like a taboo or a big deal, so Southwest ladies don't put in efforts to avoid being single mothers cos there is no stigma attached to having a child in your father's house or being a single mother unlike in Southeast where it is highly frowned at and considered as a serious dent on the girl's family and reputation.

Another thing is culture. In Southwest and maybe SouthSouth, they don't see girl child's as strangers who should get married and leave their father's house, in fact, female children even share their father's ancestral inheritance equally with their brothers, this give Southwest ladies so much freedom and empowerment not to bother about being single mothers unlike in Southeast where it's considered as a taboo for a girl child to remain forever in her father's house when she comes of age and where it is not also allowed for female children to get equal share in their father's inheritance including ancestral land.

I believe these things played key role

I don't know how rubbish is this statisense these days. In every 10 women out there, 1 is a single parent. Where are they even getting their useless stats from?
They will just interview less than 30 over time and will conclude their senseless statistics. Nigeria that doesn't have a data base of anything.
These days, young guys are afraid of responsibilities, and once you are not married and you carry your bum bum go give them and anything happens, you are automatically baby mama enroute single mother. It's everywhere these days.

I guess the OP was particular about SE , well in SE , if you born a bascard , its the husband child , therefore , single parenting has less effects . I know a poor Anambra girl that is on fourth husband with children for each . This is not bigotry but diffrent tribes have different values when it comes to marriage .

There are many single mothers in the SE. The thing is that according to their traditions, such children born out of wedlock bear the surname of their moms until the man pays what he needs to pay on the marriage list unlike other tribes that allow the child bear his or her father's name. Everything in the SE na business even marriage and childbearing

They press your mu² button and you respond typically of your likes. Una no dey disappoint for this kind self-importance things.

They said top 12 states not all states and states of residence not state of indigen but no you'll not say igbos are everywhere in Nigeria, not in Port Harcourt or any of those states mentioned because apart from the lame reason you gave above this is the time in your tribalist mind that igbos live only in the south east states only and that is why their name is not on the list altogether grin

Na wa for una oooh olorun chai

Maybe it is because south east is the only area where baby factory is being operated that's why they are not there in the list after all when you get pregnant with the sole aim of selling the baby as an infant then a survey of children living with their mothers alone cannot be found in the area as they would have sold the child before survoyers come grin are you happy now?

Some Southerners lay emphasis on early marriage in the North while neglecting the menace of single child mothers in the South. But are despicable. Children must be protected and supported to meet their full potentials.

I knew Cross River will get a ranking spot. Akwa Ibom supposed to be number 3.
The stigma/taboo of giving birth outside wedlock and claiming ownership of such child in the SE contributed to their low statistics.

It is still an indication of irresponsible fathers by states

I still want to believe that Igbo men are well travelled than their Bayelsa counterpart, either for work or any other thing

The tendency for an Igbo man to take his family to Lagos where he stays is higher than for other tribes

Also, it is more likely to see a Bayelsa man living in Bayelsa but his children are not living with him in same roof.

figures rarely lie
