How I Almost Lost My Job This Morning Because Of "Peter And Me" by Olibaba(op): 2:23pm On Aug 14
This morning started like every other workday.
I got to the office early and was discussing English grammar with a colleague before work officially began. The argument was simple:

Which is correct?

A. The book was given to Peter and me.

B. The book was given to Peter and I.

My colleague insisted it was "Peter and me." I argued passionately that it was "Peter and I." (My coconut head no dey like give up)

The discussion became interesting, and before long, another person joined us. The new person listened quietly for a few minutes and then confidently said:

"Actually, it is Peter and me."

I immediately disagreed.

"No sir, I don't think that's correct." (me no dey look face ooo)

He smiled. I explained my reasons. He explained his. I countered. He countered.

Omo this debate intensified. At some point, I was speaking with so much confidence that I forgot one important thing...

I had only recently joined the organization (Lol, me wey be sheshe dey). I didn't know all the managerial staff yet.

Suddenly, one of my colleagues sitting nearby started giving me strange signals with his eyes I ignored him. The discussion continued.

Then he signaled again. This time more aggressively, so I was confused.

Why was this guy behaving like someone trying to direct traffic at a busy junction? (Babami if you wan talk, tslk abeg)

The moment the discussion ended and the man walked away, my colleague rushed to me and said: "Are you okay?" I replied: "Why?"

He said: "Do you know who you've been arguing with for the last 15 minutes?"

I said no. Then he mentioned the man's name.

My heart skipped, fear wan kill me.

Turns out the person I had been passionately debating with was one of the top managerial staff in the organization, Jezzz.

At that moment, I started replaying the entire conversation in my head. Every sentence. Every counterargument. Every "No sir, I disagree."
Every "That's not correct." Everything.

For a few seconds, I thought my probation period had just become shorter than expected. Thankfully, the man was very calm, professional, and even laughed about the discussion before leaving.

But the experience taught me two things:

1. Always know who you're arguing with at work.
2. English grammar can start more trouble than politics.

Now here's the funny part. After all that debate, I went back to verify the answer properly...

And I discovered that many educated people actually get this particular question wrong.

So Nairalanders, help us settle it.

Which is correct?

A. The book was given to Peter and me.

B. The book was given to Peter and I.

And most importantly...

Why?

I later watched a lesson that explained the answer so simply that I wished I had seen it before nearly turning a grammar discussion into a career-limiting move.

For anyone curious, here's the lesson:

Your experience shows one should be calm always and respect whoever one communicate or argues with, since most of us very likely would never remember to request a cv before we find ourselves in argument. And it shows that communicating can enable development and growth, or at least the sharing of knowledge as you've delightfully rightfully done here.

I bet you the gods were watching. Please quote to tell what they make seen in 6 months time.

Hehe.... Egbon just conjure sweet story to drive us into watching the YouTube video 😅.

My brain still thinks "Peter and I" is correct, but if it's a real story, all of una had the same ego problem - a simple google search would have given you guys the answer and then you can discuss the rules for why which one is correct.

You disagree and debate ideologies or strategies, not concrete things like grammar.

Who knows the answer should comment below.

Imagine losing your job and then later realising that you were still wrong.

Mr man, you are very much... incorrect.

Peter and I... went to the canteen to buy food, which we bought together in a single plate. So therefore, the food is for... Peter and me.

Peter went to the canteen and... I went to the canteen.
The food is for Peter and... the food is for me.

Re: How I Almost Lost My Job This Morning Because Of "Peter And Me" by abbasajao(m): 6:45pm On Aug 14
When you follow Subject, Verb and Object rule,
Peter and me is most appropriate because they were in the position of object of the sentence.
Re: How I Almost Lost My Job This Morning Because Of "Peter And Me" by harsysky(m): 8:05pm On Aug 14
I haven't watched the video but when I'm speaking or writing and sentences like that come up, I always add "am" to it. Eg.

The book was given to Peter and I am.

It doesn't sound well as that should act as a subject.

So the answer is Peter and me

Will you say Peter gave the book to I? Of course not (except your coconut head still wants to argue that one too). You simply say Peter gave the book to me. So, why will it change because you are adding another noun object? It's simply, Peter gave the book to Peter and (to) me.

Remove "peter" from the sentence and find out which makes sense...."the book was giving to "I" or "Me"
