How Much Is Reasonable Monthly Feeding Money For Retired Parents In Nigeria? by iz2much(op): 5:07am On Aug 11
How much is reasonable to send retired parents monthly for food in Nigeria?

For those of you supporting your parents back home, how much do you normally send them every month specifically for feeding?

My mum and dad are both retired and receive their pensions. They live in their own house in Ilorin, so no rent involved. Thankfully, no sickness or regular medication expenses either.

I’m mainly trying to work out a realistic monthly amount for food for just the two of them — normal groceries, rice, beans, meat, fish, vegetables, cooking ingredients etc.

With the current prices of food in Nigeria, what would you consider reasonable for two retired people per month?

₦100k? ₦150k? ₦200k? More?

I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’d like to hear from people who actually support their parents or know what two people currently spend on feeding in Nigeria.

From your explanation 200K is fine, but if your is ok , you can still add something.

Because apart from feeding they want other need which they won't tell you , like fuel, cooking gas, transport to visit relations or helping relations that may ask for assistance , money for Two bottles of beer and pepper soup for Papa grin

Your mum will always want the lion's share of the money. Why is this always the case, despite the fact that your dad made so many sacrifices to improve your life?

Best is 200k, that would cover fitness and other health bills. It's good for old people to eat fruits

If it's just your parent living alone without any family member or house help, N200k is reasonable.

Make sure whatever amount to intend to start sending is sustainable within the first 5 years without burden on your own finances or that of your own family (wife and kids) make them no begin blame your innocent wife when things begin tight and you begin reduce your hand . Since they receive pension; and you have the intention of sending 200k, half it in 3rd , 25k to Mom and 25k to pops every 2 weeks of every month, reinvest the remaining 150k in a mutual fund, eventually if they begin to complain it isn't enough, improve it gradually by 10k.meanwhile, the money you put in mutual funds will be multiplying, that extras , you withdraw and lavish it on them during anniversary or festivities. Rinse and repeat. Abi how you see m?

When considering what to send, Consider:
1. Electric bills,
2. If they have special Diets due to age,
3. Health and Medical requirements too.
finally Pappy need pocket money too even though it still goes back to Mammy.
Plan with your siblings, so everybody chips in.

Monitor the monthly spending pattern and simply draw up a budget.
Re: How Much Is Reasonable Monthly Feeding Money For Retired Parents In Nigeria? by Stephen0mozzy: 6:42am On Aug 15
Una don start again. What you can give depends on what you earn.

The best thing you can do for your retired parents is to ensure this decision about ehat amount to assist them with is a collective purse with all your siblings.

And they should never know who is contributing what, just that it's from all the children (unless you're an only child).

Now the amounts you stated there is unfair. Are you suggesting that people who earn minimum wage can possibly Support their parents meaningfully?

No pressure yourself. Give what you can afford without diminishing your own family commitment (if you're married) or savings for the future.

Chai! Children are becoming wicked to their parents these days after so much sacrifice.

He should suffer them with paltry N25,000 each when he has capacity and time to take good care of them..just because of future and blamming of the wfehuh

And when they are very old and pass away, celeberation will start with parties and many cows. A lot of a diasporian children won't be able to come home but will send big money for a 'befitting' burial.

Op, please spend on your parents as much as you have. Don't worry too much about tomorrow. Tomorrow will take care of itself so far you know what you are doing

What is the percentage of people earning 200k in this country

And why should the elderly need 200k from a child

So 3 children giving 200k is 600k

Una dey try with this una fake life

Are you for real,25k every 2weeks for what, how often are pension paid in Nigeria, can 25k make a pot of stew and soup for them...may be your parents didn't do enough for you while you were a child.
You dont invest with the money which is meant for their upkeep, you invest with your money while balancing your immediate family needs and that of your parents.
You seem like the type whom would prefer to squander millions in their burial when they are gone and give the impression that you so much loved them, meanwhile they were hungry before their death.

A minimum of N300k will tide them over monthly. N400k will put their minds at rest financially. N500k will elicit copious prayer from them to God in your behalf and your children will do better for you in Jesus name!

Don't use what people say to measure how you support your parents...they did not ask how much is reasonable food to give you when they were nurturing you. Nobody has lived in your family house with you except you and your family.

Will you come and ask us if your girlfriend wants you to pay her rent , buy her phone, pay her school fees or take her shopping? E reach your parents, you open thread.

If they still stay together 150k is fine. 100k for mum, 50k for Dad. However, most importantly, get someone close like a caregiver who can check temperature and blood pressure. Also, clean the house and ensure their meals are good.

That way, they're not just eating but living healthy.

You obviously don't value your parents and the sacrifices they made for you to come here for the public to decide their welfare package...Some of you always think you are smart but end up exposing you ignorance in public forums.

Re: How Much Is Reasonable Monthly Feeding Money For Retired Parents In Nigeria? by Auxtan(m): 7:21am On Aug 15
₦25,000 to ₦50,000 is very okay. It all depends on if you're the only child and the cost of living of where your parents live. If your parents are pensioners, adding that to what they are paid monthly will give them a good quiet life as expected at that age.
Re: How Much Is Reasonable Monthly Feeding Money For Retired Parents In Nigeria? by Image123(m): 7:24am On Aug 15
It actually depends also if they'll get it. In many cases, you're funding some middle person close to them, or living with them. No one answer fit.

What health bills will 200k cover along with fitness?how much is medication for the average elderly person these days?
Xfordge 10/320 is N60k (28 pills) blood pressure
Lipitor 20mg is N29,600(cholesterol)
Gavus met N54,800 (blood sugar)
Cardide N9500( blood pressure)
Accuchek N18,760(blood suger test strip)
Colchicine N9750 (to prevent gout)
Zarelto 34k(15tablets) ie N68k for 30days(to prevent blood clots)
Allopurinol N4000 (uric acid)
Total N254,250 for basic drugs as prescribed by her doctor.
Mounjaro for the past 2 months 790k for 5mg for 1st month, this month 900k for 7.5mg, next month another 900k.
That is the cost of basic drugs monthly for mama as popsi don kpai.
Note that this is aside eye medication and visits every 2-3 weeks at skipper eye clinic ilupeju or VI.
The truth of the matter is that 200k cannot cover proper health care of an elderly person in naija today, we only manage and skip important tests and treatments, most use prayers and agbo while getting just basic care. Some other use health insurance, but can insurance cover cost of expensive drugs?

The OP is out of the country and spending 200k est $140 for the people that nurtured him should not be a big deal.
From your moniker, your side never really had the value of parents for love and respect so the opinion is not surprising.

My dad earns 44k as pension, while my mum earns 60k as pension.

I and my brothers and sisters have made it a family doctrine that, every one of us will be sending home 50k (max) monthly into the family account or if possible that any of us can bring food stuff's, that will be good also.

Omo na survive we dy survive for this country o, not living.

One must plan for tomorrow because tomorrow doesn't take care of itself in ones favour.

I support the notion to start with what is within your capacity to give them parents since they still earn pension.

So quit with the guilt tripping.
