Depends.

1. Are they on a State Pension themselves? Mum/Dad?

2. Do they have a house of their own or rented Apartments?

3. Health Challenges If any? Drugs more expensive than food.

4. Are they still living in the Cities or they moved back to the Towns/villages?

5. What is your own capacity to maintain a regular stipend (remember once you commit, you have to somehow keep up with it!)

You can think up their particular situations and let it inform your decision.

Things are expensive now, my mum stays with our first born since popsy is late, I and my other sister drop 100k each 4 her upkeep.

Your mum will always want the lion's share of the money. Why is this always the case, despite the fact that your dad made so many sacrifices to improve your life?
That's woman for you, just the way your wife wants the largest share (chops the largest share of your labour), it's natural.
Man is here to labour. May the Lord help us

Life is not fair. Treat your kids well and they will do all they can to make sure you are comfortable in your later life.

Do not expect a child who you were not involved in their growth to one day help you.

But na WA for una oh, once some of you begin they earn small money above 1m, una go just think say na so e be or suppose be for everybody forgetting that more than 60% of Nigerians earn far far less than that not to talk of giving their parents up to 200k a month??.. Haba.. Except you are saying combinationally coming from all the kids and you are asking for recommendations based on what you specifically earn which must be around or above 1m a month.. Becos using this as an expected benchmark would be strange considering the reality that some people still earn 30k in a whole month with kids oh. Nahim make our leaders no they ever believe say we poor becos if you can afford to give your parents 200k per individual in this current economy then it's a giveaway to that misconception by our leaders that Nigerians are generally alright. And in all honesty, sometimes when you see the way Nigerians behave and act, you may be forced to believe we aren't really a poverty stricken nation

Why not get an investment account for them?

One that would let you take something out for them every month?

With you leaving something small to reinvest every month?

At least I find it hard to believe you're earning enough and you can't get them foodstuffs

The investment account would take care of their pocket money.

Just 10m and their monthly pocket money should never be ya problem.

For those wey no geh Papa, only mama. The reinvested osusu go compound like say tomorrow no dey.

Make sure whatever amount to intend to start sending is sustainable within the first 5 years without burden on your own finances or that of your own family (wife and kids) make them no begin blame your innocent wife when things begin tight and you begin reduce your hand . Since they receive pension; and you have the intention of sending 200k, half it in 3rd , 25k to Mom and 25k to pops every 2 weeks of every month, reinvest the remaining 150k in a mutual fund, eventually if they begin to complain it isn't enough, improve it gradually by 10k.meanwhile, the money you put in mutual funds will be multiplying, that extras , you withdraw and lavish it on them during anniversary or festivities. From your explanation 200K is fine, but if your is ok , you can still add something.

Because apart from feeding they want other need which they won't tell you , like fuel, cooking gas, transport to visit relations or helping relations that may ask for assistance , money for Two bottles of beer and pepper soup for Papa grin
Let's be sincere and leave social media clout off it. Unless the guy is earning 1m per month that's when 200k might be easy on him to dish out. We are talking of lived reality and I believe as a young man, you ain't just after paying bills. You're also trying to create and plan a living and engagements like this can lay a kibosh.

As for me, my dad is late and my mum is my queen. I don't give her a fixed amount, I send her enough every quarterly to fill up the house with foodstuffs and the stuffs she likes even fruits. Atleast something that can last a long time like a bag of rice etc and I bear in mind half of this might go for charity.

I also fill her car up but not every month and I send her 50k atimes, 70 atimes 100 other times. Atimes sef, Na she go send me 100k. She's semi retired though if that makes a difference.

Chai! Children are becoming wicked to their parents these days after so much sacrifice.

He should suffer them with paltry N25,000 each when he has capacity and time to take good care of them..just because of future and blamming of the wfehuh

And when they are very old and pass away, celeberation will start with parties and many cows. A lot of a diasporian children won't be able to come home but will send big money for a 'befitting' burial.

Op, please spend on your parents as much as you have. Don't worry too much about tomorrow. Tomorrow will take care of itself so far you know what you are doing
You definitely lack simple mathematical understanding.. 25k every two weeks for both parent equals 50k per parents and that's 200k every month.. It's even more than what the was proposing to pay his parents.. Make una dey read to understand not to reply

So for me;

None of my siblings lived with my parents when growing up. Which means all he earned as a salary was for him alone. He has numerous houses and has even gone ahead to bury his sisters and parents in them.

He retired and got his gratuity, but he never told anyone. Instead, he bought a bus and gave it to someone. The bus finally died and is now parked in front of the compound.

Our education and wellbeing was never a burden on him because my mum took care of it all singlehandedly.

My mum was a trader so she brought food stuff home and we know so well, he hardly brought money for food items because my mum took care of all that.

Some will ask, why did you not live with your parents, this is because the family house was abit a hostile environment and my mom wanted the best for all of us.

Personally for me, when I started my japa journey, I approached my dad and begged for assistance, he told me all he had or has for me was prayers.

Remember the failed bus business, he asked me to find someone to buy the carcas and use that to do what I want. This is someone who had houses.

My siblings and I were struggling, he had the means but refused to help.

Fast forward to now, I was able to get to a better country, not so bad, but earn enough to cater for my family and save.

My Dad will only call me when he is out of money, he does not know what I do, he does not ask about my welfare or how I am faring in life.

I have been sending him and my mom 100k monthly and in one of those times, my mom contacted him and asked if I also sent money to my Dad, I said yes. My mom went to my Dad and asked for some money as a test to buy food stuff and he denied having any money.

At times when I send him money, he denies receiving it until I mention contacting my bank, then he makes a U-turn claiming oh, there must have been some delays.

Wait, but my Dad has houses, he receives rent from those occupying it, I and my siblings are struggling.

It was recently I learnt that my father actually has a girl who he is spending these monies on.

I have a niece living with him and the niece confided in US that when the girl needs money, my dad will even go to tenants requesting for rent for the future.

Now knowing all of these, am I a bad person for stopping these payments? Because I feel I am pouring into a big hole that has no end.
Check well

Maybe you and your siblings are not his kids

I send 200£ to my parents monthly. The two are retired. Dad was paid off and mum was in business but not anymore. My other sister sends 150£. Atleast they get over 600k but they have grandchildren with them.
They always say Things are so expensive in Nigeria. That money covers food, light bills etc

How much is reasonable to send retired parents monthly for food in Nigeria?

For those of you supporting your parents back home, how much do you normally send them every month specifically for feeding?

My mum and dad are both retired and receive their pensions. They live in their own house in Ilorin, so no rent involved. Thankfully, no sickness or regular medication expenses either.

I’m mainly trying to work out a realistic monthly amount for food for just the two of them — normal groceries, rice, beans, meat, fish, vegetables, cooking ingredients etc.

With the current prices of food in Nigeria, what would you consider reasonable for two retired people per month?

₦100k? ₦150k? ₦200k? More?

I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’d like to hear from people who actually support their parents or know what two people currently spend on feeding in Nigeria.
Fill the gas, buy foodstuffs, buy fuel for the generator, and give them around 40,000 in cash. cool
Re: How Much Is Reasonable Monthly Feeding Money For Retired Parents In Nigeria? by Originalsly: 9:14am On Aug 15
How much can you afford to send monthly?... comfortably? ... without having to make adjustments to your normal spendings? ... without having to give up or cut back on anything?.. and based on your base salary ... not inclusive of overtime /bonuses/commissions? You must be able to send that amount consistently... regardless of circumstances. Whatever you start with ... they will be expecting that amount minimum .. and will up their lifestyle to match that income level. Should you fail to maintain ... they will not be hearing any excuse ... excuse .. not explanation you will be offering. They will be mad with you ... but will not say ... they'll see it as you build them up ... then droop them down. My suggestion will be if you can afford $150 ... send them $100 max ( put the extra 50 in a mutual fund as WantsandMore advised) ... with instructions to split it 50/50 ... let them figure out what each will add to general expenses. Whatever is left... each can spend as they please without accusation of wasting by the other. Send them too much... will have them wanting to live large .. not comfortably ... live large ... Moms will be planning to go shop in Dubai ... Pops will be checking on getting a Benz ... and be going after women he couldn't get at because his money was below level. Just send enough to make them live comfortable .... and never forget .... the love of money is the root of all evill .... don't make them fall in love with it.

baba I will say 200k , it's a cool one.they can use the pension for nepa and other little little bills.aside the two of them, they have other relatives they may want to be squeezing like 5/10/15k .Eno too really easy for Nigeria now.make we just dey show ourselves love especially those abroad.
The pension alot of retired civil servants are getting monthly in Nigeria can not feed them alone let alone the other people who may be under them. I learnt yesterday a retired civil servant that finished on level 15 or 17 take home is between 125/150k monthly cry
I just weak and that same money pool they are paying them from if it was given to them once immediately they retired , they can use it to plan their life post retirement

What health bills will 200k cover along with fitness?how much is medication for the average elderly person these days?
Xfordge 10/320 is N60k (28 pills) blood pressure
Lipitor 20mg is N29,600(cholesterol)
Gavus met N54,800
Cardide N9500( blood pressure)
Accuchek N18,760(blood suger strip)
Colchicine N9750 (to prevent gout)
Zarelto 34k(15tablets) ie N68k for 30days(to prevent blood clots)
Total N250,250 for basic drugs as prescribed by her doctor.
Mounjaro for the past 2 months 790k for 5mg for 1st month, this month 900k for 7.5mg, next month another 900k.
That is the cost of basic drugs monthly for mama as popsi don kpai.
Note that this is aside eye medication and visits every 2-3 weeks at skipper eye clinic ilupeju or VI.
The truth of the matter is that 200k cannot cover proper health care of an elderly person in naija today, we only manage and skip important tests and treatments, most use prayers and agbo while getting just basic care. Some other use health insurance, but can insurance cover cost of expensive drugs?
Wow 😲

Give them as much as you can . There shouldn't be a limit. Any month you feel you can afford more, give them, any month you can afford less give what you can afford .

10K or no more than 5% of your salary should be plenty because they are still able to harvest food from kitchen garden or the farm and be doing a little hustling to make some cash.
Don't be stressing yourself too much. Your other siblings should also do what they can.

If they still stay together 150k is fine. 100k for mum, 50k for Dad. However, most importantly, get someone close like a caregiver who can check temperature and blood pressure. Also, clean the house and ensure their meals are good.

That way, they're not just eating but living healthy.
