I do not think you are painting a fair picture. Government securities over the last 10 years have paid 12-22% on average yearly. While it hasn’t exactly beat inflation, it has worked better than keeping your money idle. Saving in usd has its disadvantages too which include the fact that your local currency can also become stronger. A example is those who bought dollar at 1800 Naira believing it was going to 3,000 Naira. Dollar is currently 1364 and dropping today so what say you? Dollar backed investments can also ruin you. People loose on the us stock exchange daily. People take large financial hits on the foreign market that they never recover from too.

If you got substantial funds in treasury bills, you wouldn’t say you lost 100% of your value, that is an exaggeration. I have saved in treasury bills in the last 13 years and while i agree that it doesn’t always beat inflation, it also doesn’t loose 100% value that fast. You live in Naira, you earn in Naira, you spend in Naira. There will always be inflation, you just try to beat it.

Every investment has its perks and disadvantages. People have real estate they have been trying to sell for years with all the attendant issues of bad infrastructure and bad tenants and poor liquidity. But to each his own. Let’s create a balanced analysis.

People who have 500 million in treasury bills currently make 75 million a year which is more than enough to take care of even a large family. The issue with treasury bills is that you need to put in a large Amount of money to live off its dividends.
You're right.. dollar show me pepper, bought above 1800, still holding for 2years now, waiting to see if 2027 election will push it up a little bit, if not, I'll still sell. I have held for too long.

You better count your loses

Naira will continue to get better with all the things in place now, though it may takes time.

He has a point , but timing is everything. You must learn to read the times and be diversified across asset class

If you look at investment in foreign currency vs treasury or mm or fd during the period 2019 to 2023 fc was better due to devaluation and inflation , the reverse is the case from 2024 to date

It’s has been obvious over the last 2 /3 years naira assets will do better with all the reforms , so investment should be skewed more in naira ,things might change again later but always good to be diversified across all asset class, Money market , FD , treasury , stocks local and foreign, FC , real estate, crypto , whatever you are comfortable with and understand the risk , have no idea why people buy assets at the top and complain later when it crashes , I have dollar holdings mostly at 200 to 360 rate and i have fds running at 22/23 amongst other assets classes

How do you purchase OMO bill please? I asked two of my banks and they both said it is explicitly for foreign institutions and not retail.
CBN recently changed the rules on Last week. There’s a minimum amount threshold which I believe it’s 50million Naira.

Thanks for your submission. But I want to do this just for 1 year before using it to boost a business.

Do you think compounding effect in MMF will have any significant effect compare to 20% interest rate of fixed deposit in the same 1 year?

That 22% on their main page is just marketing strategy. The highest they can offer is 18.38%. I had pitched my tent with fairmoney. It's just a fixed deposit for 1 yr

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a revised framework via an August 12, 2026 circular titled Review of Discount Window Restrictions and Open Market Operations Participation Framework, which reopened Open Market Operations (OMO) to retail and local investors, while easing broader money market and discount window rules.Expanded OMO ParticipationEligible Investors: Participation in both primary and secondary OMO markets is now open to individuals, corporate entities, and non-bank financial institutions.Process: Retail and other eligible investors must route their bids and transactions through Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).Auction Format: Operates on a single-bid auction structure where the CBN retains full discretion over timing, volume, and tenors.Discount Window and Liquidity UpdatesSame-Day Restrictions: Banks cannot access the CBN’s discount window (Standing Lending Facility) and place bids in an OMO auction on the exact same business day.FX and Primary Markets: Previous penalties and restrictions blocking institutions that participate in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) or primary government auctions from accessing discount window facilities have been lifted.Tenored Repo Operations: The suspension on tenored repurchase agreements has ended, allowing banks to engage in repo operations with the CBN spanning 4 to 90 days.

Please how can we participate in this OMO ,someone here said that the bank is refusing to assist. I know they never want us to make it financially because of their unprofitable fixed deposit they usually introduced anytime you ask them about investment opportunities, they are never happy to process treasury bill for you, their faces is like where did this one get the info from....

Nigeria bank would prefer to lend the government money or high net individuals rather than helping small scale businesses that can improve the standard living of common man, annually they will publish bogus profits that never impact their customers lives, story for another day.

Can the investment house help regarding the OMO? Anybody that has processed his successfully should let us know how to go about it. Gracia

Interesting August bond auction result. Oversubscribed (expected). Lots of failed bids notably on the 2035 with lower stop rates and reduced amounts allotted (unexpected - N1.1trn offered, N1.73th subscribed, N805b allotted). Suggests efforts to reduce borrowing rates wink

August's FGN Bond Auction. A little short notice and quite a large offering. Will be interesting to see the rate that clears the N1.1trn offering.

Good evening my people. Pls can someone throw more light on how to access this OMO investment o.
I did secondary market tbills yesterday with GTB. When my account officer sent me the rates via Whatsapp, she without me asking told me that out of the two available rates displayed that one was tbills while the other was (in her words), "this new thing introduced by cbn". When I asked her to explain better she said even she does not understand how it works. I had to do the regular tbills I was used to. Abeg who understands how we can go about it or what to say at the bank pls.
Thanks 🙏

Good evening Chief.

FG uses tbills and Omo to mop cash/borrow from public.

The OMO is usually shorter and I am not sure if there's a calender for it unlike Bond and Tbills.

Your bank will be the best position to advice you when it comes to auction/amount to invest etc

OMO bill does not have any specific calender set date, it is subject to whenever CBN decides to mop up funds in the public.
OMO bill does not have WHT, for the person that asked. It is still new to most banks, so unless you push them further, you might not get any information.

Yes true. Like he said earlier, many people don't have idea. He need to pressure the account officer to get more info from their treasury.

Were you able to bid via your bank? I remember you raised question here also
