A 19-year-old man lost his life on Sunday morning after deliberately entering a lioness enclosure at the Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park (known locally as Bica) in João Pessoa, Brazil.

Gerson de Melo Machado scaled a roughly six-metre wall and security fencing before using a tree to lower himself into the enclosure. Visitors captured the moment on video as the lioness, named Leona, approached the base of the tree. When Machado neared the ground, she attacked, pulling him down. He briefly tried to move away but was attacked again. He died from his injuries, with officials later confirming severe bleeding from wounds to the neck vessels.

Park and municipal authorities stated that Machado intentionally invaded the enclosure in a rapid and unexpected manner. Security staff attempted to intervene but could not prevent him from entering. The lioness acted on instinct, and zoo officials have confirmed she will not be euthanized. The park closed temporarily while investigations continue.

Those who knew Machado said he had long dreamed of becoming a lion tamer and had struggled with mental health challenges, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia. His child welfare counsellor described a young man whose aspirations and difficulties had shaped much of his life.

The incident has left the community and zoo staff deeply saddened. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of entering animal enclosures and the importance of mental health support. Officials have reiterated that the park follows strict safety protocols and continues to prioritise the wellbeing of both visitors and the animals in its care.

Pure suicide! At his age, he should have known what lionesses are capable of. I wonder what was running through his mind the moment the lioness approached the tree.

He even had a chance of escaping but he chose to still sllde down the tree as if he was trying to see what the lioness would do.

You don't know what it means when women guard their territory. Lionesses leave scent on the male lion after mating for territory marking. This one does not know that even lions can be sent away by the lionesses to protect their vulnerable cubs or when the male poses a direct threat to the stability and safety of the pride. Lion is the king of the jungle but what they didn't tell you is that behind that successful male lion is his herd of women.

Experience is still the best teacher, you either use others experience or self experience
Now, we have learnt from his experience, some learnt how to enter the den, while some probably learnt not to move close to a lion
