I wonder why someone would talk down on 500k as if it were 50k just to appear rich online. I see that as childishness.

People push wheelbarrows and work on construction sites in Nigeria, earning peanuts, yet they still manage to survive. Not to talk of someone earning 500k.

Abi the person wan dey buy Azul every day after work?

Directors in some states don't receive up to 500k in a month yet they are doing well. It depends on your own definition of comfortable. In fact 70 to 80 percent of Nigerians don't see up to that amount in a month. You need to draw a line between luxury living and living comfortably
dey play, those directors have side gigs and office runs that is more than their basic salary

Any Nigerian earning such an amount and not living in comfort is clearly punching far above his financial weight.

That's an income over 70% of working Nigerians can only fantasize about.

Many of you just come online to pretend and needlessly grandstand.

I agree a lot of people pretend online, but let’s we realistic, that amount can’t sustain you in this economy. To have a job that pays 500k, think of the location. It’s most likely Lagos or Abuja. Anyone who lives in Lagos will tell you for free, 500k no carry u anywhere.
My transportation to work monthly alone is 140k, not uber o, I mean Danfo and keke. I stock up kitchen monthly with more than 250k, cus eating out is expensive. Rent is there, you’ll have to save for medical expenses cus you can’t be leaving home daily for whole month and remain completely healthy. Family support too go need come out inside ur 500k. Omo e long jare.

Those who cannot afford to pay ₦500k should pay hourly wages and employ people on part-time basis. This will enable people to hold multiple jobs and earn living wages. It is evil to have people doing 9-5 jobs, 5days a week and 22 days a month only to be paid peanuts at the end of the month.
Do you run a business sir?

Gbadugbakun:
You're either not living in Nigeria or living in the past. Not in today's reality.

A one bedroom flat in places like Lagos is about 2m. That's about 4 months salary. So you have just 8 months salary left with you.

When you factor in bills, light, gas, basic stuffs, Internet, and other things, then you add your transportation money to work and feeding, plus family black tax, you would find yourself struggling and even borrowing to survive.

Then you should know that you won't remain single forever. You'll one day find a spouse, plan and get married. That's more financial responsibility. And your income is still 500k. You can't even fully stock your kitchen with that amount as a married man.

Did I forget to mention that your landlord would be waiting for the end of the year so that he can add 500k to the 2m you're already paying. Which means you'd have to dig deeper into your savings by sacrificing another month so you can pay your rent. Which would make you poorer than you were.
I am an anti-Tinubu campaigner but then, we must be realistic with some things.

A single unmarried guy or lady doesn't need a house of 2 million per annum unless he is working with a blue chip company with job security that pay him 2million and above monthly. He doesn't need to live in Lekki or VGC or other highbrow areas in Lagos. He can make do with a room self content since he is single and unmarried, and I am sure there are cool self content apartments he can get for 500k to 750k per annum.

He just needs to be realistic and frugal with his expenditures, and if he is a guy, he must avoid unhealthy relationships with inconsiderate ladies that have senseless, unrealistic expectations from guys.

The golden rule of life is that your one month salary or income or profit as an entrepreneur as the case may be, must be able to pay your annual house rent, or at most your two to three months income. Anything more than that is disaster.

70% is too much sef.
According to the NBS, only about 5% of Nigerians have 500k and above in their accounts.

Take into account that there are over 200 million people in this country. NBS is a government institution, so there's a possibility that the real numbers might even be worse.
My brother thank you

You should have written the above in Capital letters and also bold it so that they could read this your comment clearly.

This same report have been like this since Jonathan to Buhari and now Tinubu regime. They was a time (2010-2012) that it was revealed that 90% of Nigerian does not live above $1 per day and dollar to Naira then was just 150 Naira. grin grin grin

Many Nigerians living in Nigeria are being sustained by their relatives or close friend living abroad or earning very well in Nigeria and you won't know.

Some of these married people with kids you think are living well with a salary of 300k per month are partially depending on their abroad based relatives and some high income earner relatives and friends in Nigeria; they help pay their children school fees, some help pay their house rents or contribute part, some get monthly stipends from relatives abroad and those doing very well in Naija. Some get free clothings, cars, and errands from abroad based relatives and buoyant relatives and friends in Nigeria that help them raise extra income that you don't know about.

Others are into one or two shady business deals at their workplaces that they make extra money from that you may never know until you are very close to them, some engage in all manner of office corruption and kickbacks. So they are not surviving by their meager salary that you know of.

While some are just existing and pushing life as it comes, eating unhealthy, unbalanced diets, compromising healthcare, their children education and just managing everything to stay alive but to you they are doing well whereas in reality all is not well with them

I’ve come to realization that the more money you earn, more responsibilities and tastes comes your way. It’s a natural phenomenon

When I was earning about 680k monthly around 2014, I ensured I kept my monthly expenses to around 300k and saved the rest.

But men as person don Dey earn eight figures monthly, tastes and wants don increase.

It takes a discipline person to be frugal when he or she is earning lot of money.

Yet I still feel the sense of brokenness every week

I don't doubt that there are people who spend 500k monthly on tissue alone in Nigeria. The thing is people live different realities, but the fact remains that the overwhelming majority of Nigerians are extremely poor.

The lifestyle being displayed on social media by few shouldn't distort that fact. And most of the lifestyle online are even fake, or sponsored by means that are not deemed legal or morally appropriate.

The price of drugs and other commodities will not skyrocket if necessary measures are taken to control all the other factors that could lead to such price increases.

Stephen0mozzy:
The reality of most Nigerians is #70,000 a month or less.

Note: Comfortably and Expensive are not necessarily the same.

Make una give me work make I for dey earn this o... God when. I live in Benin, here's how that kind of earning can be spent COMFORTABLY

- Rent + Utility Bills: #60,000 monthly (POP Room/Parlor Self-Contain)
- Food - #80,000 (I sabi cook)
- Transportation - #30,000
- Data - #25,000 (Airtel Unlimited)
- Family responsibilities - #50,000
- Unexpected expenses - #40,000
- Dates and Random enjoyment - #30,000

Total: #315,000
Savings: #185,000

Hehe.... How are those factors going to be controlled? The price of any product is determined by the cost of production, administration and distribution, if minimum wage is pegged and enforced at 500k, then the cost of production will definitely shoot... And then 500k will even be more useless than 70k is today because Panadol will cost 1,500 per tablet.

Government can never truly enforce minimum wage in the informal sector which is the employer of more than 70% of the work force.... The most they can do is to make the economy balanced such that people have options, when there's more demand for labor than there are supply, wage will naturally increase AND WILL STILL REFLECT IN PRICE.
