Rates will go down gradually as new funds enter or older investments they made matures.

Obviously, the criminals APC bandits are doing some manipulation.
There's going to be crazy inflation by December.

How Does a Rate Cut Affect Your Investments?

When there is a rate cut, or an increase in interest rates, it will eventually affect virtually every form of investment. However, the effect is not always immediate, particularly with money market investments such as MMFs

The reason is simple: an MMF invests in underlying assets, mainly TBills and CPs, and the existing investments continue to earn the rates applicable when they were purchased.

Therefore, following a rate cut, you may not immediately see a significant reduction in the return of an MMF. The impact becomes more noticeable as the fund manager begins to invest in new instruments issued at the lower prevailing rates. As the older, higher-yielding instruments mature and are replaced with lower-yielding ones, the fund's overall yield gradually adjusts.

The same principle applies when rates increase, the impact on an MMF may take some time to fully reflect because existing investments may still be earning the previously lower rates.

However, the impact of a rate cut depends on the type of mutual fund.

For example, in a rate cut environment, equity funds and balanced funds may benefit because lower yields on fixed-income instruments can make equities relatively more attractive to investors. As funds and investors move more money toward the stock market, increased demand for equities can contribute to a bullish market environment, all things being equal.
This can benefit mutual funds that have equities as part of their underlying investments.

So, there is no manipulation involved in this process. What investors are observing is largely the normal transmission of monetary-policy changes through different asset classes.

Apart from the above normal investment and economic interpretation of the effect of rate change, the investors themselves may behave differently and you can see a completely different scenarios, for example investors can still remain positive towards fixed income instruments despite rate cut.

The key lesson: don't expect every investment to react to a rate change at exactly the same time or by the same magnitude. The underlying assets, maturity profile and investment strategy of each fund determine how quickly and how strongly the effect is transmitted.

HEAVY OVER-SUBSCRIPTION AT Q3 FINAL TREASURY BILLS AUCTION

Following the recent MPR cut by 350bps to 23% from 26.5%, investors have gone bullish, rushing to lock in before they fall further. At the September 23 T-Bills auction, stop rates crashed as follows:

91-day 15.50% (down 80bps from 16.30%)
182-day 15.80% (down 70bps from 16.50%)
364-day 15.89% (down 73bps from 16.62%)

Interestingly, most of the demand went to the 1-year bill. As against an offer of N400 billion, the 364-day bill recorded N4.09 trillion in total bids.

A N500K INVESTMENT IN PRESCO IN 2014 IS WORTH N29M IN 2026

A close study of the financial markets taught me how the rich build wealth: not jittery, myopic trading of stocks, but with "good" patience. Real investing is rarely short-term. It's long-term. They risk little to make much, simply by waiting.

We also see this clearly in Berkshire Hathaway's investment in Coca Cola in the 1980s, securing a fortune for its investors, for generations to come. This was at a time when many thought so little about it. Warren Buffett bought a boring product everyone drinks, and never sold. Today, that investment generates $850m in annual dividends.

Now, let's talk about Presco- our own local lesson!

Presco is one of Nigeria's most valuable stocks. The biggest agric stock by far- valued at N2.68 trillion in Q2 2026.

In 2014, Presco was trading around N32- N48. Today, Presco is N2,045.30 per share. At an average share price of N35, a N500k investment would be worth 14,285 shares (500÷35= 14,285).

At the current price, this will be 14,285×2,045.30= N29,217,110, in 2026; not adding the dividends received over a 12-year period!

They say Rome wasn't built in a day. There's a life lesson here, not just a finance lesson: Patience pays.

Abeg, those of you that like to ask questions such as, which is the best mmf platform? there by getting responses promoting some platforms should stop it. Whatever info put out here is used behind the scene by people.

I recently joined First Ally from the promotion the company got here about two weeks ago as the best but the high blood pressure the system gave yesterday fit kpai someone lol.

First, l tried to check my investment, they said my password was incorrect, l checked the password carefully and tried to login again but got same incorrect password replied. I tried the 3rd times, they banned me for about 3 hours. At this point, l said they have finally got me again.

I rushed to this thread to see if others are experiencing same, l got a bit of relief when l learnt the system was under maintenance. I started praying and counting down to 7:55pm when l was told to login again. @8pm, l tried login in with same password l have been using for 3 more times and my account was locked again and l was asked to try again at 10:44pm. At this point, l said maybe l have been ran street by the platform. I came back to this thread again, this time, l started reading comments on password resetting.

I said today na today, na night vigil l go do like this so. But l slept off, woke up around 2am. The saying in the bible that, where a man treasure is, there his heart will be is a confirmed truth/fact. The moment l was awake, l rushed to first Ally, tried to login the 1st time, got incorrect password or email reply, l hit the forgot password button and was told a password recovery/resetting code has been sent to my registered email, got the code and entered and was asked to enter a new password and to re-enter it after which l gained access to my account.

The most annoying part is, l didn't even change the password. I entered the old password as new one and the system accepted it still. My question now is, is this what old clients have been going through and those of us just joining will be encountering each time first Ally is going to do maintenance?

Trustbank via cowrie, since l joined in January, not even for once did l encounter any hitch login into my account. I will conclude by saying, no MMF platform is the best. They all have comparative advantages over one another. Thanks for reading and attention to this matter

Well I understand your frustrations as I'm also new to First Ally too and didn't like the extended maintenance period, though I didn't allow it disturb my sleep lol.

I know periodic maintenance is not out of place for any app/system, but the comment someone made here yesterday that such is common with the first Ally app isn't sitting well with me. So I've decided to go back to ARMOne cos at least their firm managed my pension for years until recently when I just requested for a balance en-bloc payment.

So I'm used to their operations, even if they don't update earnings during the weekends. Besides their rate is very fair. I don't want to be carried away by very high interest and be facing such incessant maintenance downtimes. I'm new to all this and I don't want to here story.

@Coolis, I understand your experience, and I agree that experiences like this can understandably influence how someone compares fund managers or investment platforms.

However, most of the time, when people ask, “Which is the best MMF platform?” the responses they get are often influenced by personal experiences. Someone may have had a very smooth experience with one platform, while another person may have experienced downtime, login issues, delayed transactions, or other challenges with the same platform. So, in that sense, what is considered “best” is often relative and depends on the factors being considered.

When it comes to the safety and structure of a Money Market Fund, however, I would be careful about using the app or platform experience alone to determine which fund is safer.

The important thing to understand is that your investment capital is not sitting inside the investment app.MMF is not like MDBs. The app is essentially a window through which you view your investment, initiate transactions and monitor your holdings and there are other alternative ways of doing this as well. The actual fund assets are held through the fund's structure, with the underlying investments managed by the fund manager and the cash/assets held with the appropriate custodian, subject to the applicable regulatory framework.

So, if an app is temporarily unavailable, undergoing maintenance, or giving you difficulty logging in, it can certainly be stressful, especially when you want to confirm that your money is there. But the inability to log into the app does not, by itself, mean that your investment has disappeared or that the underlying fund assets are affected.

For me, from experience, when comparing MMFs, I would rather look at the fund structure, fund manager, custodian, trustee, regulatory oversight, underlying assets, historical performance, fees, liquidity/redemption terms and other relevant factors, rather than simply asking which app gives the best user experience.

So I agree with your final point: there is no universally “best” MMF platform. Different funds and platforms have comparative advantages, and what one investor considers best may not be the same for another.

The key is to understand where your money actually sits and how the fund is structured, rather than judging the safety of the investment solely by the performance of the app.

Again, it's always good to ask questions, especially from the customer service center, to avoid unnecessary stress.
It was just an unavoidable maintenance/upgrade, and it's a one-off.

keep investing and keep learning.

If we’re being honest, first ally’s handling of this downtime is frankly embarrassing. Investors shouldn’t have to rely on Nairaland to discover that a simple password reset is what restores access to their accounts…just because the company itself failed to communicate the solution. If you weren’t on Nairaland, you could still be locked out of your own investment today.

Yes, the regulatory design of MMFs gives some assurance of safety of investment, but that doesn’t excuse an operational failure of this magnitude. We all know downtime isn’t necessarily a big deal, but leaving customers in the cold to sort themselves out is a massive red flag. It’s doesn’t show seriousness at all. And I’m highly disappointed to say the least.

Operational failure of what magnitude?
They shouldn't carry out system maintenance? Was there no notice system was under maintenance? There was notice of maintenance. I don't know what these noise is all about when it was clearly stated the system is under maintenance.

Your submission is noted.

Though I’m not trying to hold brief for them or excuse any lapses, the truth is that they actually communicated the upgrade and provided both a phone number and an email address in case customers encountered any issues.

Also, the restoration of access after the upgrade was not necessarily tied to a password reset. Some investors did not need to reset their passwords at all. For some, simply confirming their device with an OTP was enough to regain access without changing their password.

However, I had already reached out to my go-to person earlier this morning regarding the need for clearer communication, particularly around the process for customers to restore access after the upgrade.

Interestingly, yesterday’s experience with the First Ally app truly confirmed the saying that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

I’m also very impressed by the level of engagement and the expectations investors now have of fund managers and financial institutions. This kind of feedback and engagement can help institutions identify gaps, improve their systems, and ultimately provide better services to their customers.

At the end of the day, investors are becoming more informed and more demanding of good service, and I believe that is a positive development for the industry.

Wishing you all happy investing week ahead and good returns for your portfolio.

Maintenance is not limited to first ally, every system carry out maintenance. I use cryptto exchanges alot & they carry out maintenance from time to time, that is how they improve. When there is system maintenance, services are disrupted. When they carry out system maintenance, new features are added. You should worry more if u are using a platform & it doesn't carry out periodic maintenance. It be speaks there is no growth.

If you were on trustbanc via cowrywise, why are you joining first ally? Becuase of the cowrywise block on topping up? Or just diversifying?

To diversify actually, @Emmasoft is most vast/knowledgeable on investment than most of us here. I codedly adhered to his advice to have/maintain at least 2 MMF platforms. While one should serve long term vision the other for short term. The last time l made a withdrawal from trustbank via cowrie, it took 24hr. While withdrawal from First Ally will be completed in few minutes. Trustbank will serve long-term while First Ally day to day activities due to flexibility in withdrawal

Isn't this enough reason to port or diversify?

Diversifying is okay. I have quite a few MMFs myself. Just wanted to be sure he knows he can invest directly with Trustbanc via their own app Prime Pro.

How seamless is Prime Pro ? Do you use it ?

There have been complaints in the past and people not knowing which is which.

Confusing it with the scam prime whatever.

And seems the app isn't smooth too.

I am considering options since I can't top up.

Can you share their MMF rate for today?

Why not invest directly with Trustbanc? I have a dedicated personal account officer there, and I typically submit my withdrawal and top-up requests via email — every single process is completed within just five minutes.

If I get a dedicated personal account officer then I will.

I don't want bottlenecks.

I want to stop dealing with them via Cowrywise.
