Let’s be completely honest with ourselves. If you are a married professional with a spouse and two or three kids, the current exchange rate has likely ruined your immigration plans. You lie awake at midnight calculating the Proof of Funds (POF) for Canada Express Entry or a UK route, and you realize that showing ₦25 million to ₦35 million cash in a bank account is either impossible, or it will require you to sell your only house, your car, and completely empty your life savings. But here is the mistake that will cost you millions: out of desperation, people copy a single guy's pathway or buy a random "student package" from an agent, only to arrive abroad and find out their spouse cannot legally work, or childcare costs more than their single salary. If you are moving with a family in this September 2026 reality, stop asking "Which country is easiest?" The question that will save your family from structural disaster is: "Which skilled pathway allows my specific professional profile to override these impossible upfront cash pools?" The rules are completely different across these 9 countries. Some routes don't require you to show a single Kobo in a bank account if you target the right skilled employment pathway. Let's look at the raw data and the hidden catches for each destination. 1. CANADA Canada has several economic immigration routes where eligible family members can be included. • Express Entry: A highly competitive selection system for eligible economic immigration programs. • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Allows provinces and territories to nominate candidates according to their own local immigration priorities. • Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP): This is employer-driven and focused specifically on the Atlantic provinces. The POF Reality: For Express Entry, proof of funds is currently required for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program unless an exemption applies. The current minimum liquid settlement funds are heavy: • 1 person: CAD $15,263 • 2 people: CAD $19,001 • 3 people: CAD $23,360 • 4 people: CAD $28,362 • 5 people: CAD $32,168 • 6 people: CAD $36,280 • 7 people: CAD $40,392 For AIP, the cash required upfront is significantly lower: • 1 person: CAD $3,815 • 2 people: CAD $4,750 • 3 people: CAD $5,840 • 4 people: CAD $7,090 • 5 people: CAD $8,042 • 6 people: CAD $9,070 • 7 people: CAD $10,098 The Catch: AIP is NOT simply a low-POF option or a cheap shortcut. You need an eligible job offer from a designated Atlantic employer and must satisfy the programme requirements. AIP applicants already working in Canada with a valid work permit do not need to show settlement funds. 2. AUSTRALIA Australia uses skilled migration routes based on factors such as occupation, age, qualifications, English, and skilled employment. • Skilled Independent visa 189: An independent points-tested route. • Skilled Nominated visa 190: Requires nomination by an Australian state or territory. • Employer Nomination Scheme 186: An employer-sponsored permanent residence route. The POF Reality: There is no single, fixed settlement-fund amount for the 189 and 190 visas comparable to Canada's Express Entry table. However, do not deceive yourself. You still need to budget heavily for application charges, skills assessment, English testing where applicable, health checks, police certificates, travel, and immediate settlement costs for your dependents. The Catch: Meeting the minimum points requirement does not automatically guarantee an invitation. You can sit in the pool for months while your age points drop. 3. GERMANY Germany runs employment-based residence routes for qualified professionals. • EU Blue Card: Aimed at highly qualified professionals who meet strict qualification, employment, and salary requirements. • Skilled Worker residence routes: Applies to people with recognised vocational or academic qualifications and qualifying employment. The POF Reality: There is no single fixed settlement-fund figure for everyone using a qualifying employment route because your employment and salary demonstrate that your livelihood is covered. Other accepted forms of financial evidence may apply depending on the particular route. The Catch: Qualification recognition and hitting the salary thresholds are the actual barriers. For the 2026 EU Blue Card, the standard salary threshold is €50,700 gross/year (or €45,934.20 gross/year for certain high-demand categories). If your German job offer doesn't hit these numbers, moving with your family becomes a different structural ballgame. 4. UNITED KINGDOM For skilled workers, the main option is the Skilled Worker visa. You need an eligible job with an approved sponsor and must meet the salary and skill criteria. The POF Reality: • Main applicant: £1,270 • Partner: £285 • First child: £315 • Each additional child: £200 You must hold these funds for 28 consecutive days unless your sponsor certifies maintenance on your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). The Catch: Following recent UK policy updates affecting care and medium-skilled roles, not every occupation currently allows you to bring dependants. Do not rely on outdated 2024 information. If your job code falls under the restricted list, you might relocate alone and find out your family is legally barred from joining you. 5. NEW ZEALAND New Zealand offers direct skilled pathways focused tightly on your employment status. • Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa: A points-based residence system. • Green List Straight to Residence: Immediate residency for specific high-demand roles. • Green List Work to Residence: A pathway to residency after working in a designated role for a set period. The POF Reality: There is no fixed, generic bank statement table like Canada's Express Entry. Instead, the focus is almost entirely on your job contract, your hourly or annual pay rate, and meeting the specific accredited employer conditions. The Catch: Eligible partners and dependent children aged 24 or younger can be included. However, having a standard degree does not cut it. Everything depends on your specific occupation code matching an accredited employer job offer. 6. PORTUGAL Portugal provides standard pathways for qualified non-EU professionals via the Residence visa for subordinate employment. The POF Reality: You must demonstrate sufficient means of subsistence relative to the national minimum wage. For family reunification, the legal reference structure is: • First adult: 100% • Second adult: 50% • Each child/minor: 30% The Catch: The documentation requirements for independent or contract workers are highly specific. Do not rely on old social media numbers or arbitrary figures quoted by random travel groups. The consulate evaluates your actual contract stability. 7. FRANCE France targets international professional talent through the highly structured Talent residence routes, which includes their specific EU Blue Card category. The POF Reality: There is no single universal bank balance required upfront for these professional routes. Your qualifying employment, employment contract tier, and gross annual salary are what demonstrate that your family's livelihood is fully covered. The Catch: The French professional framework is highly technical. If your degree evaluation or your specific contract tier does not align precisely with the "Talent" sub-class criteria, processing your family's files concurrently becomes difficult. 8. SWEDEN Sweden runs work-permit options for non-EU nationals through their standard Work permit for employees. The POF Reality: There is no fixed liquid bank statement required for the main applicant. However, if your family is joining you, you must meet a strict maintenance requirement. After your monthly housing/rent costs are deducted, your remaining net income must cover these exact thresholds: • Single adult: SEK 6,243 • Couple: SEK 10,314 • Child 0 to 6: SEK 3,336 • Child 7 to 10: SEK 4,004 • Child 11 to 14: SEK 4,672 • Child 15+: SEK 5,339 The Catch: The system evaluates your family's maintenance completely separately from your basic work permit eligibility. If your salary pays your rent but falls short of these household thresholds by even a small margin, your spouse and children's visas will be rejected. 9. NETHERLANDS The Netherlands runs a streamlined pathway for international experts via the Highly Skilled Migrant residence permit. The POF Reality: There is no general liquid bank balance requirement for the main worker. The financial criteria are entirely met by securing a contract with an IND-recognized employer that meets the strict, non-negotiable monthly gross income thresholds for your age bracket. The "Hidden" Professional Trap Most Married Nigerians Fall For Let me drop one final raw truth that travel agents will never tell you because they want to sell you a generic admission package. Your immigration destination should never be chosen because your friend went there. It must be chosen based on how that specific country’s immigration law evaluates your exact daily job duties, not just your job title. For example, you might be a Senior Manager or a highly skilled supervisor in Nigeria, but when you evaluate your profile against Canada’s TEER categories, Australia’s ANZSCO codes, or Germany’s strict qualification framework, you might discover that your specific role either requires a local professional license you don't have, or it doesn't meet the minimum salary threshold required to bring dependents. Worse still, some countries will grant you a worker visa but legally restrict your spouse from getting an Open Work Permit unless your job hits a specific high-tier skill classification. Imagine selling your properties, landing abroad, and realizing your spouse is forced to sit at home for two years doing nothing because you copied a single person's route. Immigration is purely an individual mathematical and legal equation. Your specific combination of age, exact qualifications, family size, and available capital means there is exactly ONE country out of these nine where your probability of success is highest and your financial risk is lowest. If you guess wrongly, you waste millions on credential evaluations and non-refundable visa fees before you even pack a single bag. I will be online to reply to general questions below. Drop your thoughts or share your current relocation challenges, and let's discuss them organically in the thread. |

To add to what I posted above, let me share a quick reality check for those in banking, administration, and HR: Many of you have great degrees and solid experience, but you often struggle with standard points-based systems like Express Entry because your professions are highly saturated globally. Meanwhile, countries in continental Europe are quietly looking for your exact skills under specific employer-driven tracks provided you know how to map your local experience to their regional framework. Don't let the fear of a language barrier or an exchange rate stop you. If you have a solid 5 to 10 years of professional experience, you already have a strong foundation. You just need to figure out which exact country values that specific foundation the most. I'll be checking this thread periodically over the next few days to answer general questions. If you are facing a specific roadblock with your family's profile or currency calculation, just drop a comment or feel free to look at my profile details to get in touch. Let's make sure nobody wastes their hard-earned millions this year. |

₦30M IS NOT THE REAL PROBLEM. CHOOSING THE WRONG ROUTE IS. 🚨 Let me add this because this is where many people get it wrong. If you have ₦20M, ₦25M or ₦30M and you're relocating with a wife/husband + children, please don't start by asking “Which country can I enter?” Start with: “Which pathway actually works for MY family?” Because two people can have the same ₦30M and have completely different options. One person's profession may fit an employer-sponsored route. Another person's qualification may require recognition or licensing first. Another person may discover that the route they were planning doesn't allow their spouse or children to come under the same conditions. And someone else may spend millions on a route that looked attractive online, only to discover later that the numbers don't work for their actual family. This is why “my friend did it” is one of the most dangerous ways to plan relocation. 😂 Your friend's age is not your age. Your friend's occupation is not your occupation. Your friend's family size is not your family size. And their immigration status may not even be the same route you're considering. ₦30M should be enough to make you plan carefully, not gamble carelessly. If you're currently planning to relocate with your family, drop just these 5 things: Age | Profession | Highest qualification | Years of experience | Family size Let's see how different the picture becomes when we stop talking about “japa” generally and start talking about actual profiles. 👀 |

xyrexzmanto:I will advise you to stay put in Nigeria, you can do alot with your 30M in Nigeria, which may be too little to relocate a family of 5 to any comfortable country in the West where a significant numbers of our people are just wasting away. Even though Nigeria may be tough and challenging, crossing to the West does not automatically transforms to a better life. Inspite of the astronomical inflation, the purchasing power of the Nigerian population still remains high because the people are hustling, reason why foreigners from Asia are flooding into Nigeria. |

For Nigerians planning to study abroad, what is the one thing you wish you understood before starting your application? Not the usual “which country is cheapest?” question. I'm talking about the things people only discover after they've already spent money, submitted applications or received an admission. For example: • choosing a course before checking the actual entry requirements • assuming every “fully funded” scholarship covers everything • overlooking qualification differences between countries • applying to universities without checking whether the degree is recognised for the career you want • underestimating document and application requirements • waiting until the last minute to prepare academic documents There are probably many more. What caught you by surprise when you started researching study abroad? If you've already gone through the process, whether you got admission, a scholarship, a rejection or simply abandoned an application, share the one thing you wish someone had told you earlier. Even if you haven't applied yet, what part of the process do you currently find most confusing? |

Thanks for sharing the details. At 36, with 7 years in IT/Instrumentation Engineering, a BSc (Ed), and a family of 3, I wouldn't pick a country for you based on the ₦30M alone. The part I'd want to check properly is how your actual IT/Instrumentation work maps to the occupation codes and qualification requirements of the skilled/employer routes available to you. That can change the options considerably. So before spending money on applications, I'd first narrow down the routes that actually fit your profile and family situation. If you want, send me your exact job role/duties and whether your wife is working, and I can tell you what part of the profile needs checking first. jworos: |

Look for remote work first. N30m for a family of five is too small in this current economic climate. That would have been reasonable 10-15 years ago when the exchange rate was better. It's better you upgrade your skills (IT, coding etc) ,acquire relevant certifications and look for a remote job overseas. You can then relocate via that route. You could use that money and double it in Nigeria. Japa is not for the faint-hearted. Think carefully. As an immigration lawyer, I would advise you to visit one of these countries on your own and study the environment. xyrexzmanto: |
| Re: ₦30m To Japa With Wife And Children? How Are People Doing It? by Globalscholar1(op): 2:41pm On Sep 30 |
One thing I want people to understand from this thread: Having ₦30M does NOT automatically mean you should be looking at the same immigration routes as someone else with ₦30M. Here’s a simple example. A family of 5 may have enough money for a particular route on paper, but if the principal applicant’s occupation is not eligible, the qualification does not match the occupation, the required licence/registration is missing, or the spouse cannot work under that route, the ₦30M doesn't solve the actual problem. And this is where people lose money. They check: “Country A requires this much.” “Country B requires that much.” Then they choose the one whose financial requirement looks easiest. That is backwards. Before paying an agent, school or visa consultant, check these 6 things against YOUR profile: 1. Does my actual occupation match an eligible occupation/code? 2. Does my qualification meet that route's requirement? 3. Does my work experience count as relevant experience? 4. Can my spouse legally accompany me and work? 5. Can my children accompany me under the same route? 6. After application and relocation costs, how much of my savings will actually remain? If you cannot answer all six, you don't yet know whether a route is affordable. You only know that you have the money. This is why I keep saying: DON'T START WITH THE COUNTRY. START WITH THE PROFILE. If you want to know what this looks like for your own situation, send me your age, occupation, highest qualification, years of experience, family size and approximate budget through my profile. I can tell you what needs to be checked before you start throwing money at applications. |

Honestly, if I could raise the millions people spend on 'Japa' visas and proof of funds, I’d turn it into heavy capital right here. With the current exchange rate and inflation, Nigeria is a goldmine for anyone who can solve local problems. Instead of taking millions to the UK or Canada to work minimum-wage shifts and live like a second-class citizen, that exact money could start a lucrative agro-processing, logistics, or tech setup here that makes you a boss. But I get it—if our basic systems like electricity, security, and steady policies actually worked, nobody would leave their comfort zone to struggle in the cold. Another there's another twist to this, people look at the ₦20 million to ₦50 million spent on relocation and say, 'You could have built a kingdom in Nigeria with that'. But in today’s reality, you can have ₦100 million in your account and still be one bad government policy, one medical emergency, or one security incident away from losing it all. People aren't just fleeing poverty anymore; they are buying peace of mind, working public infrastructure, and a predictable future for their kids. It's tragic because if Nigeria offered even the bare minimum of steady light, safety, and a stable currency, nobody would gladly choose to start from scratch as an outsider in someone else's country. God save Nigeria. I know Nigeria would be OK... |

Very crude mentality. Maybe they did so in the name of the so-called love. Last October, I visited my age-,long coursemate. He lives in Scarborough area of Toronto. He told me to meet him at the STC. On getting there, I was expecting him to talk about his wife but he kept quiet. After he entertained me, we headed for his house. I now asked him, where's madam. He said baba, na long story. His wife had left him. He said as a pastor he's not had any intimate encounter with any woman years after she left him, even in the face of temptations.hes planning to remarry now. He said the greatest mistake he made was bring her to Canada. Truthfully, he said she was well behaved and without issues while in Nigeria. He said she was influenced by the so-called influencers the moment they secured their PR. I met a lady too, she said, any man who intends to bring his wife and family to Canada must rethink because once she gets in, won maa fęę do pa. Only if she truly loves him would such not happen cos temptations are much over there, same with usa and the UK. We've heard cases of a married man and a married woman run tinz while at work and they got caught. The above is one scenario, another scenario is the economic balancing. In 2016, I took my childhood friend and a close relation to the US. I told my manufacturer there that 2 of my staff would be coming with me and they sent both of them an invitation each. Their visa was approved and we headed for NY, upstate together. After the training I came back while they stayed back One of them got his green card in 4 years, 10 years validity. Before he got it, he had started building his house at egbeda area, 1 year, after securing his green card, he was able to complete it. He's almost finishing his hotel now at fagba area, very massive. My friend works all randa, nobody to distract him, even doing security work join. His family is in Nigeria, doing very fine, he comes home every December. Meanwhile, the other guy got a link a year after his arrival in the US and his wife and children went with him. Though schooling is free for kids, there are some inevitable fees you will still pay. 2 years ago, having tried to secure his green card but failed interview twice, him and his wife went into mortgage. Last year, he lost his job as AI had been deployed to do most of their jobs. Now, he's struggling to meet up with mortgage. His wife has started acting funny lately. I keep telling him to take things easy with her. As a couple, except you're really sure of landing a great job over there on arrival with securing papers along with it, don't try relocating all at a time.Get your footings firmly before relocating with him. Starting a life abroad as a 2nd class citizen is very hard. You may not enjoy yourself and your freedom till you're old. You'll work your heart out. |

Not in the japa line .... but find this thread very interesting and informative. Anyone interested should simply clear their brain and start planning afresh following the advice given by OP. Following Japan threads on NL .. so often we read of so many that were successful... left the country.. see photos of the arrival .. the first few days .. then when reality sets in ... nothing. The advice given here I don't see as a guarantee of success ... but greatless reduces the risk of failure. |
