What Does First Body Actually Mean In The Nigerian Car Market? by Carmadesimpe(op): 11:17am On Oct 19
If you have been searching for a used car in Nigeria, you have probably seen sellers advertise vehicles as first body.

Some buyers consider it a major advantage, but what exactly does the expression mean?

In everyday Nigerian car-market language, “first body” generally suggests that the vehicle retains its original body panels or paintwork, although sellers do not always use the term consistently.

The important thing to understand is that first body does not automatically mean first-class mechanical condition.

A car can have original paint but a worn gearbox, engine problems, weak suspension, or a history of poor maintenance.

Likewise, a vehicle that has been professionally repainted after minor scratches is not automatically a bad purchase.

Imagine two cars.

Car A has original paint but slips when changing gears.

Car B has been repainted after cosmetic damage, but its mechanical condition is good and its documents check out.

Which would you rather buy?

I would investigate the condition and history of both vehicles instead of allowing the phrase first body to make the decision for me.

An experienced inspector can check for repainting, filler, panel replacement, and possible structural repairs. Even then, paint condition alone cannot establish the complete accident history.

My question: When a Nigerian seller says first body, what do you understand it to mean? Do you consider it a deciding factor when buying a car?

Na scam

Some car dealers deliberately go painting their cars with cheap paint or deliberately wear down the paint so that when it quickly fades, they can call the car first body

If not, how can there be 1st body of a 2003 Corolla in Nigeria?...Does it mean that the car's factory paint since 2003 remained and even is still shiny 23 years later?

It means no accident, paint work and buffing means var was used roughly and has been involved in several or major accident that requires panel beating and painting.

There is nothing poor about it...first body men's that the car carries it original factory paint which is an assurance that it has never been in a accident before

It is very possible to find 2003 Corolla in Nigeria with first body.

I know because I drive one!
Re: What Does First Body Actually Mean In The Nigerian Car Market? by Chukwudi4naija(m): 7:36pm On Oct 20
Original body from date of manufacture and not necessarily original paint. Mostly stated with an intent to deceive, especially Nigeria used cars that one can never be careful enough to drive safely without being hit by careless drivers, particularly mini-bus drivers or keke riders. Even Tokumbo cars are squeezed in a container and panel-beated after arrival.
Re: What Does First Body Actually Mean In The Nigerian Car Market? by oglalasioux(m): 7:37pm On Oct 20
First body is one of the most important things to check while buying a car. Underneath rust or poor chassis alignment after accident can make you spend money for the rest of your life on the legs and tyres.

An accident and underneath rust free car is the best thing to consider while buying a second hand car. You can change engine and gearbox. But how on earth can you change a misaligned chassis?
Re: What Does First Body Actually Mean In The Nigerian Car Market? by fabolouz1(m): 7:44pm On Oct 20
In simple terms it means one that has never been sprayed before.

Did you buy it brand new?

If you didn't, it ain't first body

That you don't know if it has been repainted doesn't mean it hasn't

first body does not concern mechanical aspect of the vehicle, it simply means a car that has the original body panels and has not been panel beated or touched with filler, magnets can still stick on the body

A larger %tage of tokunbo cars imported into Nigeria are accident-damaged, with bodywork repairs carried out on certain parts before they are sold.

First body is often just a sales tactic used to negotiate the price down when middlemen is helping you sell a car. There are better ways to check car body than relying on first body talk.

There is a technique I have seen used used by some Arab car dealers which involves tapping different sections of the car body with a tool to identify differences in sound that may suggest body filler or previous repairs.

dont mind them, let them keep deceiving themselves. it pains me when Nigerians just choose to be foolish to talk about this first body rubbish when they are talking about the body paints. If they were referring to the body panel been changed then i will understand. With this our harsh sun / weather condition and you expect car owners not to respray their cars because the want to main the paint that was painted oversea. that's jow gullible Nigerians are.

I guess you are the one who does not know what first body is. first body has nothing to do with the paint of the car.

Not necessarily. In Nigeria's used-car market, “first body” generally means the car retains its original body panels, but it does not always mean the car has never been repainted.
Na so them take dey sell old recketty cars give una with the lie of first body. So i will not paint my car again because i want to retain first body. Me that likes painting my car like every year.
