Group Captain Samuel Mbidon Ethnan (4 October 1954 – 3 April 2001) was a distinguished Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officer and reformer celebrated for transforming the Nigerian Air Force Base in Ikeja.

Early Life and Education
-1). Birth: Born on 4 October 1954 in Numan, Adamawa State (of Bachama descent).

-2). Education: Attended the Nigerian Military School in Zaria.

-3). Military Training: Joined the Nigerian Air Force on 7 January 1974 as a member of the Regular Combatant Commission Course 15 at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

-4). Specialized Training: Trained at the Royal Air Force Shawbury in the United Kingdom, completed courses at the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, and qualified as an Air Traffic Control Officer and Fighter Controller.

Key Military Career & Appointments
-1).Commandant: Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano

-2). Diplomatic Role: Deputy Defence Attaché to India (1989)

-3). Administrative Roles: Deputy Director of Air Traffic Services at NAF Headquarters and Commander of NAF Headquarters Camp, Lagos
-4). Base Command: Commander of the Base Service Organization (later Base Services Group) at NAF Base Ikeja.

Legacy and Impact at Ikeja Base
-1). Sweeping Reforms: Appointed base commander, he turned the neglected Ikeja base into a clean, well-landscaped, and highly disciplined military model known for strict sanitation, infrastructure renewal, and personnel welfare.

-2). Death: He died on active service on 3 April 2001 after suffering chest pains at his office.

-3). Immortalization: Shortly after his death, the NAF Base in Ikeja was officially renamed the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in his honor by then-Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Isaac Alfa.

Adamawa(Old Gongola) and Plateau states have really produced many Nigerian Air Force officers. However, today they are the hot bed of the widespread insecurity plaguing the Nigerian nation.

Some of us dey dey drive pass this are everyday but doesn't knq anything about this SAM ETHNAN. I have a friend in this barrack in the late 90.This barrack is so neat.

I remember then in the barracks, this man will go from house to house to check if ur house is clean, and if your house is dirty, he will give you quick notice to pack out.

He introduce compulsory barracks cleaning and sanitation, ordered planting flowers and greeneries.

Hecwas a disciplinary, he reduced crime in the base by givinout strict punishment to culprits.

He introduced waste bag for packing wastes,

He ordered the removal of domestic animals, poultry from the barracks, before, goat, sheep's, fowl were reared in the base

He did lots of things that transformed the barracks to what it is today .

This was in the early 2000s, around 2001, i was still in primary sch then.

His death shocked everyone

Julie later married another Naf general, they have 4 kids now and they're living in calabar

Probably the cleanest military establishment one will step into in Nigeria. As at 3 years ago, the last time I visited there, they are still maintaining the ambience and strict military discipline there. There is one air force base or naval base on Murtala Mohammed road in Ilorin too, very clean as well

Nope. That's Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre. That place is also clean and well regimented.
Make I give you one update. There is a clean, nice hotel there and it's considerably cheaper than what you get outside
