Nigerians, Other Foreign Graduates To Get Shorter UK Work Visa From 2027 by Kingzjayzee(op): 4:54pm On Nov 01
The United Kingdom, UK has announced plans to retain its two-year post-study work visa for international students graduating from selected universities, partially reversing an earlier decision to reduce the duration of the scheme.

Under the revised policy, graduates of universities with strong immigration compliance records and employment outcomes will continue to qualify for the two-year Graduate visa, while other international graduates will receive 18 months from January 2027.

The UK government disclosed the change in its 2026 Budget, although it has yet to publish the list of qualifying universities or explain how institutions will be assessed.

The policy introduces a two-tier system in which the university attended by an international student could determine how long they can remain in Britain after completing their studies.

“The government will also increase the duration of the Graduate visa to two years for graduates from high compliance universities where there are strong labour market outcomes,” the Budget document said.

The change comes after the government announced plans to reduce the standard Graduate visa from two years to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s degree holders, effective January 1, 2027. Doctoral graduates will continue to qualify for three years.

The development could affect thousands of African students, particularly Nigerians, who constitute a significant proportion of Britain’s international student population and rely on post-study employment opportunities to gain work experience and recover the cost of their education.

Nigeria was the UK’s third-largest source of sponsored international students in the year ending June 2026, with 26,060 sponsored study visas issued to Nigerian main applicants, behind China and India.

Nigerian nationals also recorded 20,604 approvals under the Graduate route during the period, making them the third-largest nationality group to benefit from the scheme.

The Graduate visa allows eligible international students to work or search for employment in Britain without requiring immediate employer sponsorship.

However, the visa cannot be extended, and graduates seeking to remain longer must switch to another eligible immigration route, such as the Skilled Worker visa.

Students graduating before the end of 2026 can still apply for the existing two-year Graduate visa, while the reduced 18-month duration will apply to applications submitted from January 1, 2027.

After spending ₦45m on tuition for a one-year master’s degree you may never use, you will be required to return home the same month you graduate or pay an additional ₦6m for a post-study work visa that expires after 18 months. Even if you ventured into crime, saving ₦51m in the UK within two years would be almost impossible. This simply means the whole thing is academic tourism for you and big business for the British government.

About 90% of these applicants aren’t travelling solely to study; they are seeking an escape from the harsh realities of Nigeria.

No one truly thrives in a country battling a guerrilla war against poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship under heartless leaders like Ahmed Tinubu and his ilk.

I want to experience a functional Africa. I want to see a thriving Nigeria. It is POssible, and those who believe in it will be OK.

Hash realities of Nigeria yet they were able to raise 50 million Naira.

They should ask if their peers have such money abroad.

But you don't have to raise all the money before going there. You just pay a deposit and you start working at least 20hours a week after settling down. It can lead to greater opportunities in life especially with many of our graduates unemployed at home and wasting away.

I pity parents that spend as much as 20 to 30 million naira to send a child abroad to get education that may not apply to his life career at the end of the day, instead of setting that child up here in Nigeria strong and secure

Nobody spends that amount of money with a desperate attempt to remain there. No poor man can afford 45 million naira for a master's degree. Most students in the category of low income earners are in the UK on fully scholarships.

Well, it could be explained that they're afraid of competition and over saturation of labour by immigrants/Nigerians

I'm not sure you're in Nigeria living with us or you're not just in tune with reality of what is happening around you. You would surprised to know what the candidates or their parents are selling to raise money

Their heads don dey set. They will send graduates back home but will admit Iranians, Iraqis and Pakistanis in to their country without academics papers. They're gradually taking over their country. In Bradford, Asians have taken over jobs and the city centre. The Britons are living in the high hill on your way to Leeds-Bradford International Airport. Same thing in Birmingham City. London mayor is from Asia.

This is why those that don't have dual citizenship should go back to their home country and elect good leaders that will stop Nigerians from embarking on academic tourism..

Go back home and vote wisely

If your country starts working, UK and other Western countries will queue up in their home country for Nigerian Visa.... Singapore was once like Nigeria... Their story changed from one man, Nigeria can be better but not under Apc and those currently there.... They're the same people that destroyed pdp, anpp and cpc

UK too like our money sha. Their unis cannot survive without it and that's why they keep concocting new ways to finesse us off our wealth. When they're done, they start screamimg at you to go back calling you a drain on taxpayers' money. grin

You know how much these barawos make from just immigration every day?
A whopping £60m!

Very misleading title. The title is all about UK work visa while the article is only talking about post study visas
Re: Nigerians, Other Foreign Graduates To Get Shorter UK Work Visa From 2027 by epainos: 2:43pm On Nov 06
UK is always trying to balance their immigration. Lol. They will reverse it again in 6 years time. Lol. So, if you are still young, just let it slide and dont waste your time. Start watching another set of the Parliament of the UK talking about attracting international students again. Thats how they roll.

If they are truelly trying to escape from the insecurity, poverty and hardship ivory coast, Cameroun, Togo and even benin republic can protect them

Yes. A new Nigeria is POssible if we decide not to vote for challatans that have had the opportunity before, ruled and governed states before but are now justifying their failure with gibberish now.
If only there is a state in Nigeria now that people can run to instead of Britain. If only...
They are suddenly in our faces claiming sainthood. We do not need to expatiate further. Nigeria will be alright.
