In Ghana he had two chances;

1.If the odd in ghana turns out too brutal that he can't handle it,he can jump to the next bus coming to Lagos without being question about "work permit " or "VISA" etc unlike in the far away europe.

Yes he was a free man in Lisbon with a enough cash until he met jennifer (a prostitute working for Madam Grace) ,then, the chase, hiding, recording of phone calls etc...infact do you know hw many hotels he rented and how he picked that money from Madam grace in that taxi and sent her to go jam Jose squad
