soul_glo: It's never really a loss until you sell. Don't sell stocks just because the stock or the market drops. That's usually the time to buy more. Diversify, diversify, diversify. Don't put all your money in one sector and definitely not in one company stock.

And again, if one invests for cash-flow rather than capital appreciation it will be difficult to go wrong.

On the long run return on stocks of good companies is better than money market investment.

They are far less risky though. Some peoples strategy is slow and steady wins the race. It depends on your investment strategy. How do mutual funds work in Nigeria? Are there any ones worth looking into? I prefer mutual funds to stocks though I own some stocks too.

Probably the biggest intellectual problem an investor has to wrestle with is the constant barrage of noise and babble. Noise is extraneous, short-term information that is random and basically irrelevant to investment decision-making. Babble is the chatter and opinions of the well meaning, attractive talking heads who abound. The serious investor's monumental task is to distil this overwhelming mass of information and opinion into knowledge and then to extract investment meaning from it.

The stock market is not a Casino, but if you move in or out of stocks every time they move a point or two, or if you continually sell short, or deal in option and futures, the market will be your Casino. And like most gamblers, you may lose eventually or frequently.

What impresses me is how much better, long-term owners of stocks do with their portfolios than traders do with their switching of inventory. The relaxed investor is usually better informed and more understanding of values, he is more patient and less emotional, he does not incur unnecessary commissions , and he avoids too much thinking.

mister josh: I want to buy shares oo, pls ao much is d least amt one shuld expect as dividend for a share of lets say #10,000 in a healthy bank. Pls o am still a student, will d dividen b able to pay my monthly BIS subscription?
II couldn't withold a chuckle as i read ur last question. Didn't u read where Jarus said that N3,500 worth of First Bank shares bought in 1993 is now worth N90000. Lemme tell you a short shares story. N25000 worth of Standard Trust Bank shares was bought in 2003 @ N4 each in an IPO. During Soludo's recapitalization program, STB merged with UBA. The initial 25000 units was reduced to 12000 units. Fast forward to 2007, each UBA share sold for N57. Ignorant me didn't sell then cos i was waiting for it to keep going up. Then came 2008 and the crash of the stock market. Anyways now, due to bonus shares and all that, i presently own 30,000 units of UBA. The share price is about N8. I've collected about N55,000 dividend so far. Last time i collected was in 2009 sha. Hope i've been able to enlighten you a bit.

It is not during the up years that great investment track records are made, it is during the down years.

I bought tonnes of Unilever shares during the down years of 2009 and 2010 for N8, I was able to sell the shares some few months ago for more than N60

N3500 worth of FBN shares in 1993 is now worth N900k in 2013.

BONUS SHARE: This is similar to dividend but it does not involve cash payment. When a company gives bonus shares, it means every shareholder is entitled to additional free shares. N3500 used in buying 1000 units of First Bank shares in 1993 have grown to over 54,000 units valued at almost N900000 in 2013 due to bonus shares and growth of the company.

Are you okay? What the hell do you know about my financial education? You think quoting Warren Buffet makes you have a clue? What ever reason has you pissed this afternoon I will suggest you deal with it and leave me out of it. I have been investing in stocks and mutual funds since before you ever learned how to quote warren Buffet. I asked the person I asked to list funds because I have no mutual funds in Nigeria. Not because I need to be educated by you. You really have the nerve to address me when I asked you the same question and you responded with quotes from the Internet. I asked someone else that might know what he is talking about and you decide to crawl out of your hole and attack me. If you can list a fund then list it. I know how funds work and I can do my own research. If you cannot please respect yourself and jump off my balls.

Re: Why Young People Should Invest In Shares by rhames(m): 7:41pm On Nov 19, 2013
One of the biggest secrets of buying shares is not only the above listed advantages. It is one of the two greatest hedges against inflation (real estate is the second) and it is the only way to save and make money over the long term. I have been buying shares since 2003 and of course i have had some ups and downs but some shares are still worth the buy. There are three reasons why you buy shares. First is to save for posterity(buy or build a house, send kids to the best schools, start a business or other specific targets). Second is to build value over the long and short term. Third for the purpose of earning passive income in the nearest future.

Shares that fall into the first category are as follows:
FBN Holdings,Union Bank,UBA,NAHCO-Aviance,Dangote Flour,Dangote Sugar,GTB (Cheap to acquire ,regular Dividends and bonuses shares)

Shares that fall into the second category are as follows:
Nestle,Cadbury,Total,Mobil, Dangote Cement,Julius Berger.( Expensive but growth/Value focussed)

a combination of both falls into third category.

Dont buy any shares on sentiments. Its dangerous.

Another point i want to raise is get a good stock broker. If you can start with a minimum of N250,000 please do so because the best stock brokers dont come cheap. They give you advice on paper, complete analysis of stocks to buy and personalised service. Use a traditional Merchant bank or Market maker. I use FCMB stockbrokers. If you are in Lagos or Abuja walk into the HQ or CDB branch. I bought Nestle 10000 units of Nestle @ N54 then and you can imagine how much i have made on capital appreciation. I have not sold it. That was on their advise.

I am accountant by profession and that has helped me a lot with my investments. I am currently working on a website that will assist newbies in shares on how to go about things.

Good luck with your investments. Any quick questions can be sent to oryxsmeconsulting@gmail.com
