Casual Leave:annual Leave What Is The Difference Please by benedo(m): 2:27pm On Feb 27, 2008 |
Dear all, One funny law has just recently been made in my office to the effect that, all your casual leave will be deducted from your annual leave, now the impression i have gathered about the casual leave issue is that the Nigerian Labour Law states that you are entitled to five days of casual leave exclusive of your leave in a year. Does anyone out there have an idea of what the law states on what the general standard should be about issues like this, as i would really like to take this up with the overzealous hr in my office always trying to impresss the whiteys with so called "innovation" 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Annual leaves are earned leaves Certain amount of annual leaves can be carried forward in the next year. Casual leaves are other set of leaves that you are entitled to receive in a year which is again based on you company policies. Casual leaves lapse by the end of the year if unconsumed. Weekends are always excluded. So when you plan your holidays you ensure to work out in this manner. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Funny but i took my casual leave in october to see my dad when he was sick. Luckily, the hospital extended it to 10 days to give me more time. 2 weeks later i took my 6 weeks annual leave..lol..i just returned on Monday. In the hospital i work, you cannnot take a casual leave after your Annual leave. And its 5 working days. I think it varies everywhere. 4 Likes |

Annual leave in Civil service is the 30 working days (depending on your level) leave with leave bonus which you are entitled to. Casual leave is the 7 days leave mainly for unforseen issue which you are not entitled to. It depends solely on the discretion of the management. You can only apply for your Casual leave after you've exhausted your Annual leave. I don't know about leave in the private sector. 21 Likes |

Well, to the best of my understanding about how casual and annual leaves work, in my organization you are only entitled to apply for casual leave after you have exhausted your annual leave. You cannot go on casual leave if you still have any annual leave left. The only deductible leave from your annual leave is medical leave. And that can only happen if there happens to be an emergency where you need a medical leave after you have exhausted your annual leave. Means the number of days you spend in your medical leave would be deducted from your next year annual leave. 1 Like |

Seanne969: That's absolute callousness....unimaginable wickedness....How on earth will medical leave be a salary-deductible leave. As a matter of fact, Medical leave is even more important than the annual leave. It's only when you are healthy that you can work. So long the medical conditions are true, then medical leave should be highly regarded. 2 Likes |

In my opinion and experience, casual leave is any leave other than sick, emergency, compassionate and maternity leave that is less than 5 days. Casual leaves are deductible from your total 28 leave days in a year. In the same vein, annual leaves are leaves above 5 days. |

Casual leave is taking permission to be absent from work when you aren't due, according to organisation rules. You take this leave if you have eventualities you have to take care of,for example, your relative has health issues and you have travel, and so on Annual leave on the other hand is the leave you are entitled to every year, according to the organisation's rule. If for example, your annual leave starts from October 10th to 17th every year, you aren't expected to be absent from work except those days. If you take a casual leave on September 1-7th to attend to a private matter, it will be deducted from your annual leave. There is also "maternity leave" for members of staff who give birth. This can be taken just before one is due to give birth. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Casual leave becomes necessary when you have exhausted your annual leave and something comes up that requires your attention. You can be denied casual leave but can't be denied annual leave without compensation |

Simply read your organization's "Conditions Of Service" If your employers are reputable, they should have it. If they don't have one, then you better listen to your HR. 2 Likes

Compassionate leave from my own perspective, is this type of leave you apply for after you might have exhausted all your annual leave. ( For public servants only)However, this type does not exceed seven days. Or this type of leave is exclusive for emergency or pressing issues that need urgency. Note that is not a right but a privilege. Casual (civil) leave is this type of leave that does not exceed seven days probably the person who apply for this type of leave is having an emergency to attend to then it could be considered. Normally, outside your annual leave depends on the head of the organization. Note that is not a right but a privilege. Thanks and remain blessed. |

I am HR. Every staff is entitle to casual leave but only confirmed staff or those who have spent up to one year in the company are entitled to annual leave. Now casual leave in a year is usually 3-5 days in a year depending on the policy of the company. casual leave is a non deductible leave except if the staff has exceeded the number of days in the year. Other leaves that are non deductible are Compassionate leave, sick leave ( based on doctor's genuine medical report) and examination leave. For control purpose, a company can decide to make casual leave and any non -deductible leave to deductible leave if there is abuse by staff. 3 Likes |
