My wife drives a Saturn Vue 2008 hybrid and I must confess, it is very fuel efficient. It switches to electric when the system is balanced and running at a steady speed or when in traffic jam. We spend less fuel on it and it serves well. Hybrids are the way to go.

There are more cons than pros.

In Nigeria, there is no luxury of AAA. And every mechanical or electrical equipment is bound to malfunction at one point
in its lifetime. In buying a car for use in Nigeria, the most important decision should be based on what will happen
when the car breaks down....that's when you will know whether the purchase was a good decision or not.

When you drive a Hybrid Vehicle in Nigeria, chance is that at a point you will be left at the
mercy of "any" mechanic to get you out of a situation. And once this gentleman pops your hood/bonnet, it
is goodbye. That is to say, your problems have just started.

Personal example: People wonder why I still drive manual in Nigeria. My response is that as someone who is scared of
flying around in Nigeria, manual gearbox is the only one I can drive comfortably without fear of the unknown.
From PH-FCT-Lagos-Enugu-Owerri-Yenogoa....my car has been the shiznit!

For some reasons, when I use new cars technology and Nigeria mechanics in one sentence, it scares the living
be-Jesus out of me.

Well said InvertedHammer but how many new cars will you find having manual gearbox these days? Automatic is still good provided you make use of the recommended gear oil and not the fake sold in shops to avoid issues of transmission failure even though i personally love the manual for long distance trips but you find more auto than manual these days.

Pros:
-fuel efficient (at low speeds, the electric motor kicks in while the regular petrol system kicks in at higher speeds. Since the latter system is more efficient at higher than lower speeds, the hybrid system will use less fuel than a regular car in a place like Lagos where the traffic could be demonic)
- Never worry about charging batteries as the batteries charge while the vehicle runs. A poster had already explained the idea of saving kinetic energy during braking
- When the battery charge is low, the vehicle switches to petrol mode at least until the battery is charged again
- good for the environment (but not something to worry about in present day Nigeria)

Cons:
- more expensive to buy than the non-hybrid model
- complex enough to give the roadside mechanic headache
- maintenance requires technical competence plus use of OEM parts (both costly)
- you are on your own when you need to replace the battery as you would need to order it for USD xxxx.

So far, think that's it...
