I am a young man trying to become a referee in the Nigerian football league (NPL). what do i need to do in order to become a ref? can someone please advice? its not going to be my first choice career but i would certainly love to be a referee.

You can make enquiries at the Nigeria Referees' Association; though I don't know where their office is or visit the National Stadium/NFA office.


Except, itz a DIE-HARD passion, I won't advice you to go there if you are trying to make a living out of it.

They face more hazardous risks while refereeing in 'fanatical venues' and their welfare package ain't good.

Its not going to be my first career job, just something i want to have as a hobby, i know Nigerian League is a crazy league where they beat up refs with little pay they earn, but my goal is not to make money from the league, its a shame that we can't even boast of having one or two Good referees whistling for Nations cup, Caf champions league, not to talk of world cup and we say we love football and that we are the papa in African football.
so i would love to know if there is any phone numbers or website i can enquire about referees. Not really sure of National stadium in Lagos

Nat'l stadium would 'widen' ur search. And i put that there 'cos I don't know where NRA's secretariat is.

Recently, the NRA sighted CAF's decision to take only 1 9ja referee as POLITICAL!

Perhaps, u might think abouth that too. I do know we gatz good coaches here.

u got to fear for ur head o.being a ref in nigeria is not a very good idea

even though u are not going to be refereeing for the money benefits, u might need to be biased to avoid beatings, even biasedness does not guarantee your safety, other than that, wish u da best, its a nice passion

well, i still can't find a website to get information on how to be a ref. the nfa does not even have a website. its obvious. i am just trying to go with my mind, i knowe nothing comes easily especially being a ref in Nigerian league huh, i wonder why i still want to be a ref in Naija, but its just a burning sensation in me.

hi, its a nice idea u trying to become a referee.
im presently a grade one referee, and i must say ive enjoyed every bit of it.
to become a referee, you must try to locate a local referee society in your area.
there is probably a referee society in your locality.
they normally have their keep fit exercise every weekend in the stadium or sports complex that is convenient.
you must first of all write an application letter to become a member .
some condition need to be met anyway
1.you must have a source of livelihood
2.you must be above 16 years
3.you must have someone to recommend you.
the letter of application should be addressed to the secretary of the referee society in your locality.
the opportunity to meet with different professional, keep fit, have free access to stadias in nigeria and abroad and have a good source of income from officiating matches are some of the numerous benefits one can derive from been a referee.
you start as a referee in training for say 2 yrsthen u sit 4 an exam. after passing d exam, u are promoted to grade 3 after 3 yrs u sit 4 another exam, if u pass u get promoted to grade 2. after another 3 yrs u sit 4 another exam, if u scale thru u get promoted to grade 1.
at that grade u no longer sit 4 any exam, but go for NRA physical fitness test which is held every yr at the national stadium abuja b4 the football season begins.

Just like what you are experiencing now, a lot of people gave a lot of words of encouragement while some did the opposite - but I didn't look back. I can say it's harder to become a football referee here - being a black man, considering the first impression people always have about black people. You wouldn't need to worry about this, all you need to show is a lot of confidence, passion and believe in yourself, just like I did. However, there is a lot to learn. Every single match appointment you get is an opportunity to learn something new and add to your process management database (you'll understand "process management" when you finally become a referee)

I wish you were here in England, it's pretty straight-forward to become a referee - simply bu going through the normal process. Written, verbal and practical exams, then you'll become a level nine and move up the ladder from there. Refereeing is a serious business, not sure how serious they take it in Nigeria. Hi,

I can only give my version. I have only been a referre for a three years in England, and can honestly say that it has gone very well for me. After taking exams and carrying out 6 games on local leagues, I was very quickly moved through the ladder as they say, and have now become eligible for officiating in the conference-thats one league away from football you see on the television.Next year, am looking forward to officiating in the football league. I have bben told that FIFA are looking to fast track black, qualified and talented referees-be they from any african country.

The best advice I can give you is to make contact with FIFA-you can get their address through Google.They will then give you the address of the Nigerian Football Association.As for the advice given earlier that it will take you nine years to reach the standard required to officiate in Nigerian matches-I cannot see that as being the norm. I my self have already been contacted to officiate in Nigeria- and I say I have only been refereeing for three years.

One word of caution though-you have to be talented-do not think that just because you are a Nigerian, that gives you automatic right to qualify-like any thing in life-ifyou are good enough ten you will ge your chance.

Good morning,

Its been ages you posted on here, i didn't really read your comment until today (7 years later), how i skipped your comment is still a wonder to me.

I finally joined a referee society close to my abode this year and i am yet to write the first exams.. i don't mind if you have one or two things to put in me so as to fasten the whole process and at the same time become better.
