Nigeria is a multi ethnic and multi diverse country with a population of over 140 million people and a literacy rate of less than 48%. The self acclaimed giant of Africa lead by an indecisive president. Rated among the poorest and most corrupt nations despite the abundance of invaluable natural resources. A country where nepotism, tribalism, ethnocentrism and political jingoism are the order of the day. We spent billions making and launching NIGCOMSAT1 yet it has yielded 0% to the nation building, meanwhile NIGCOMSAT2 is on is way for launch some where around 2009, funds that could arguable be described as wasted! Build and maintain a NUCLEAR POWER STATION in Nigeria? Huh? I laugh in pidgin. A country that has $60 billion foreign reserve yet people live under $1 dollar a day. $240 million daily from excess crude which cannot be accounted for. N5 million furniture allowance for nation assembly members while the teachers who play a very important role in a nation cannot have an exclusive salary structure. NTA the self acclaimed largest TV network in Africa which can barely provide news on other Africa nations……, Curtsey SABC, that’s what we always hear. Graduates waste a full year all in the name of NYSC, at the end the outcome is UNEMPLOYMENT. Listen; I was going to see a friend and something happened……… POLICE: hey stop there open that bag, I think na una dey do YAHOO! YAHOO! SELF: I cannot open my bag unless you show me your warrant of arrest or search. (other police men came and forcefully collected my bag opened it and saw my laptop and books, switched on my laptop and did some Radom searching. I think he saw nothing implicating, and all my confidential files were coded somewhere. Cheers. ) POLICE: na me u dey speak gramma for abi, which mailer u dey use? Even if u nor dey do YAHOO! I know say u get boys. My boys na multicalos them dey go, police nor dey near there. SELF: I am completely unaware of what you are talking about, you saw my book right ? I am a cisco network associate. ( he took my wallet and my phone, scrolled down my phone book, opend my wallet saw two atm cards and one master card. He smiled and said oya make we go atm go collect money N80000 otherwise na station u dey go. POLICE: were u see money take buy laptop and this kind phone? If u nor be G boy? Oya make we dey go station. SELF: how I got my laptop and phone is absolutely none of your business, we re going to the station right? I am not moved, lets GO!, conversation continued until we got almost to the station. LOL , as we approached the station he pulled over and told me to go, saying I was too storbun, as I was leaving, he called me and said abeg make I find am small thing, I looked at his miserable life and gave him N1000. And off they went chanting. I went back home without achieving anything and frustrated, rather wasting money on some bunch of miscreant and these were the people that were meant to protect lives and properties. So was I WRONG to call Nigeria a country of doom!, A country where no SYSTEM WORKS.? |

This is the normal way the country is run; the government official at the top will loot the treasury, official at the bottom will loot the masses. l doubt it if there is any Nigerian living who has never given bribe or collected one. Nothing works , nothing ever works. this country is doomed. |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by brownbonno(m): 11:12am On Jul 06, 2008 |
Kosovo, kosovo:Yes you are wrong.Giving the Police 1k after such a brilliant stand to defend your right is wrong. Nigeria have got systems that works but there is no propelling forces to make it work. |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by Don1DeMaco: 1:03pm On Jul 06, 2008 |
kosovo:Yes i guess u are wrong cos after going thru all dat stress u still decided to give them money, no be small money ooo N1000 for being right, na people like u no dey make police allow innocent people go for free. i mean u already got them, then u give N1000 so how police go take do the next guy who is equally right & stubborn but unwilling to part with money ?? and u want the country to get beta |

| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by Kobojunkie: 2:32pm On Jul 06, 2008 |
@Poster, I have to agree with @BrownBono and @Demarco here. Giving them bribe after all that only makes you yet another enabler. |

hayprof:What kind of crime is it to carry a laptop with you? When I was in Nigeria, I carry my laptop with me, although you have to carry a receipt with it all the time. But it is crazy though. ![]() |

@poster when the nigerian police do their work,we complain to the high heavens and when they dont we all call them names, what have these people done wrong now? everywhere in the world, their police force have what is called ciminal profiling, we know mostly young men are involved in this and they were nly doing their job,you dont look diffrent to the average nigerian yahoo boy and having laptops, phone and that is a smoking gun because as we all know thats what they use for their scams, yes they r wrong to have requested and collected bribes but dont forget that the policemen are average nigerians too and their actions reflect the state of the country, they are not from outer space, they eat, drink and collect roger same as the diffrent uniforms u met at the airport, the guy opening the door for you in sweet sensations expecting a tip,the lady serving you e.t.c |

The problem with Nigerians is that we are always in a rush to go where ever we are going.I have several experience with the Police and i give them all the time in the world to fool themselves. Why do you need to carry the receipt of your Laptop?Receipt issue make laugh.I was stop by the police some years ago,he requested for the Car particulars,i gave him and step out with my satellite phone to make a call(I was in GSM no service area). He looked at me and to his colleague yahoo boy. After 10min he came back for interrogations Police-Who is the owner of this car Me-My wife Police-Where did you/your wife buy car ? Me-Lagos Police-This car paper show the car was imported Me-Yes,we don;t make this type of car in Nigeria,so it was imported through Lagos Port. Police-You lied, you said you bought it in Lagos. Police-Where is your wife me-She is in Lagos Police-We will want to see here Me-OK,fine Police-Lets go to station The second police officer excused to a corner and ask me to settle to avoid big problem. I told him i don;t give bribe. After about 45 min without going to the station. The Police came back to me an request for the receipt of the car-I bust into laughter. I said i don;t have receipt for this car sorry.he said this is the biggest offence.I said OK lets go to the station and charge me. I decided to have a big mouth and spoil their day collections.later the officer in charge came to me and said i should go and forget about the matter.I finally leave there without dropping anything for them and spoil there day. |

@BrownBono and @Demarco here, its is not as easy as you think i was under pressure having witnessed what happened to a friend, he paid N10000 to bail himself AND N50000 to bail his laptop, the police didnt even give him his laptop bag and flash. though the guy didnt carry his receipt and stuff like that, no be small thing. |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by oldie(m): 9:56pm On Jul 06, 2008 |
The police intimidated you and you gave a bribe of N1,000 Then the country is doomed? Sometime I wonder, if you guys want to change this country And what offence did you commit to have bribed the police? |

Don1DeMaco:Don1 i hail you for a 100% perfect reply. I also add that we all who open our big mouths to confess negativity upon our great but yes fumbling country have have contributed one way or the other, big or small to its sad state. Mr kosovo, sad and unfortunate what yu went thru, but dude having handled it so well and then giving out 1k was totally uncool, then going ahead to call Nigeria doomed, haba, anyways, |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by Kobojunkie: 10:15pm On Jul 06, 2008 |
kosovo:I understand that you felt pressured but you are still an enabler. By the way, not all Nigerians have actually knowingly bribed the system. I completely understand what your friend may have gone through cause I too had to deal with even worse, about 10 years. I paid the price and it was a painful experience, made worse by the fact that I was labelled an idiot by others around who felt I was wrong for not paying up. Would I do it again Certainly and I hope we understand that the only way to win is to stand our ground against these people, in greater numbers. |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by kingdong(m): 10:29pm On Jul 06, 2008 |
Kobojunkie:Agreed. It can only take time but it will work when we take needed action. |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by kosovo(op): 1:51am On Jul 07, 2008 |
I'd be happy if it was as easy as that, just walk away., haven't you heard of some situation where either a bus driver or bike ridder is shot by the police just because of N20, i dont think there would really have been another option. |
| Re: Nigeria; A Country Of Doom! by Kobojunkie: 1:53am On Jul 07, 2008 |
kosovo:The more reason why we need to push harder to stop this nonsense, so those lives would not have been in vain. |

You shouldn't have given the ediots money? I remember my encounter with them when I bought a BMW car though third party without knowing I should regularize the documents within 3 months. Since I had no time to take the car immediately, I went to Lagos to pic it after the time span had elapsed. At Benin, those thieving Nigerian police stopped me and insisted I give them 5k. I resisted the bribe and they took me to their station. I asked for their boss and they all claimed there was no boss around there. Since I needed to be in Abuja that same day, I decided to part with the 5k. When I decided to give them the 5k, they insisted that I should make it 10k since I delayed and caused them to come to the station. One asked me to make statement, I did and asked him to include in the statement that they're demanding money before releasing the car. The statement writer asked why I was "behaving like this" I told the one holding my car key to give it to me that I needed to take something from the car. I took my bag and personal effects and left. Outside the station, I made inquiries about the location of the station that supervises that outpost and they directed me to another about 30 minutes drive. I went there and met the guy in charge and explained what happened. The officer asked someone to call the people holding my car to release them to enable me reach Abuja on time. I thanked him and he even asked someone to give me a ride back (not all policemen in Nigeria are crooks). When I got back, all the crooks holding my car had congregated around their van waiting. Their leader said, so you went and reported us. I asked him why I shouldn't. They gave me back my car key and asked me to find them something. I told them, "One naira, I won't give you" and left. Whenever you meet the crooked police, always target their bosses, those are mostly not willing to risk their jobs for the stupidity of their juniors. |
