At 1 Corinthians 14:27,28 the bible says; ”If anyone speaks in a tongue, two -or at the most three- should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.“

Did those verses leave anything to controversy as to the fact that what the churches of Christendom are doing is the direct opposite of what the scriptures say? In fact, if u are patient enough to read the entire chapter 14 of 1Corinthians, u'd discover clearly that what they call 'speaking in tongues' today is never what they did in the first century...

Anyways, its not expected that all would get the GLARING sense of the scriptures as 2 Corinthisns 4:4 says "the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

Only those who are HONEST at heart God draws to himself and shows these truths.

Yes, but we don't chose when and when not to speak in tongues. God can decide to impart the gift on you now for a particular purpose and when the purpose is achieved it will depart. no monopoly of gifts in the house of God. Not what we see in churches today.

lets continue reading to verse 13
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

Those that believed, the bible called them devout/pious men heard their own languages spoken but mockers who didnt believe accused them of being filled with new wine.

There's a clear difference between speaking in tongues and speaking gibberish. When one speaks in tongues, people who speak that tongue understand or someone interprets for others to understand. When someone speaks gibberish, nobody understands not even the person who's gibbering. You say it's a language of heaven? When the angels spoke to humans such as Lot in the Bible, I wonder what language they conversed in for Lot to have understood it. Is it not obvious then that when one truly speaks in tongues, someone other than the person speaking must understand it?

read ur bible well and i hope ure nt reading new world translation? ure mixing two things here. 1. speaking in tougue while praying (which happened to disciple when dey were filled wit holy spirit in upper room) and 2. act of prophecy while worshipping. it is d speaking in unknown language thru prophecy dt bible says dt d speaker shud be able to interprete himself or someone shud be beside him to interprete for him hence d msg he is giving has no meaning.
however some pple hav gift of speaking alone and paul advised dem to pray God giv dem ability to interprete. it depends on d church ure going. in my church (cac), most speakers hav gift to interprete.

" In the same way, unless you with the tongue use SPEECH THAT IS EASILY UNDERSTOOD, how will anyone know what is been said? You will, in fact, be speaking into the air" - 1cor 14:9 !!!

Lol Paul in this verse was admonishing them(us) to speak in the language that is known to all of them not in tongues that cannot be understood by the speaker or any other person for that matter.

"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God: FOR NO MAN UNDERSTANDETH HIM; howbeit in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries." 1Cor 14:2.

Speaking in this unknown tongues( not today's gibberish of course) edifies only the speaker not the church. Paul was saying that when the gather as believers, if anyone must speak in unknown tongue there must be an interpreter! and this interpretation of tongues is also a spiritual gift(1Cor 12:10).
If this unknown tongue is some language in this world, no need for the gift of interpretation then. Do you need the gift to interpret a foreign language to your tribes man?

When we want to prophesy or teach a doctrine to the church its far better we speak in the language understood by all. That way everybody will be edified.1Cor 14:3,4.
