* Hi guys, I know I haven't posted anything yet for Unwanted and Getting A Life...I'm currently working on Unwanted, but this particular story is something that just came to me now and I absolutely had to share. Do tell what you think of the prologue*

The story takes place in Lagos and is an inter-ethnic romance on trust and forgiveness. Hope you like it

PROLOGUE:

Who the hell did she think she was talking to him the way she had? She had some guts that was for sure. Nobody spoke to him like that, least of all some little, insignificant girl who would probably have been breaking stones or selling petty food items in some rackety stall in a dirty market if not for him....God, what was he thinking? That was Jaiya he was thinking of, his Jaiya. She didn't deserve that, but damn her she brought out the devil in him.

Or maybe she just asked difficult questions....no, she had no right asking him that question.

Who are you?

Who was he? He was Lanre fu'cking Coker! Business mogul extraordinaire. He ran a good part of Lagos, he needed no introductions, least of all to the girl he called his little sister. Well, not anymore. He was cutting her off, there was no way in hell he would continue feeding her if she thought she could speak to him however she pleased.

And what was his crime?

He had asked a little favor from her...just one night so he could get her out of his system once and for all. He couldn't do anything anymore, thoughts of her which were far from sisterly that he had managed to suppress all these years had re-surfaced, so he had decided to deal with it the only way he knew how.

And she had the guts to deny him. She looked him straight in his face and said "No"...there were no explanations, just a simple 'no'. And she even had the effrontery to look hurt and disappointed, like he had done some abominable thing by tabling his request. For all the years he had cared for her after the death of her family, she should have at least given his proposal a thought.

But no, that damned stubbornness of hers, she always had to make things difficult. What did she have that he hadn't had? He had slept with women far more beautiful, far more successful and intelligent than Jaiya was, women of different shapes, colours, races, so who did she think she was to deny him what he wanted?

Lanre shut his eyes and gripped the steering wheel tighter. He had thought a drive around the city would calm him, instead it seemed like he was getting even more agitated. Jaiya...Jaiya...Jaiya...S-hit!

He paid no attention to the traffic light as he made a sharp turn, only to find an on-coming SUV, before he could swerve to avoid the car, there was a head-on collision. All he saw was a bright light before he went unconscious, all the while the only name that rang in his head was Jaiya.

Chapter One

She should never have gone to his office.

Jaiyanma sat few metres away from Lanre, watching the rise and fall of his chest and listening to the beeping sound of the heart monitor. Save for those, one wouldn't know he was still alive. He was very still, but he was stable. The oxygen mask had been removed 2 days ago, that little progress had calmed her the tiniest bit- but it didn't stop her guilt.

It was all her fault. He had gotten in that accident a couple of hours after their heated exchange. She had pushed him to it, to his anger. She had made him get into his car,it was her fault. She had just stood there in the middle of his office and watched him leave, she had seen him drive out in his anger and hadn't bothered to make him stop, calm him down, to make him see reason.

If she had known...if she had gotten even the tiniest premonition that this would happen...she felt the teardrops on the back of her hand. The accident had been fatal, Lanre had gotten out with a head injury and a fracture on his right leg that would heal in a few months. The driver of the other car hadn't been so lucky. The young man had died instantly.

He hadn't had his seatbelt on and had been thrown head-first through the wind-screen. She was grateful Lanre even in his rage had had the sense to use his seat-belt. At least he was alive.

He had surfaced from his coma two days ago, she hadn't been around. It wasn't fair because she had been with him for 5 days straight and he hadn't so much as twitched, only for him to open his eyes, though briefly, when she had finally been convinced by the doctors, nurses and his parents to go home for some hours.

But this time, she would be here when he awakened again, nothing was going to make her miss this for a second time.

She reached out and took his hand in hers, instantly she missed his tight grip. It was so surreal seeing the strong, powerful Lanre Coker rendered so helpless. She couldn't remember ever seeing him like this, he was always the epitome of strength, confidence, masculinity. That was what attracted everyone to him, he had a certain aura about him that instantly put everyone in awe of him, Lanre Coker was the S-H-I-T, and damn if he didn't know that.

She grew a little sullen as she remembered what led them to were they were now. That same idea of himself, his bloated ego. Somehow, the nice, sweet boy she had looked up to in her childhood had grown into a predator. He had asked her for the impossible.

"I want one night with you."

She would never forget those words. He hadn't asked, he hadn't said it nicely. He had demanded it like he owned her, like she had no choice but to do as he wished. In that moment she had known he wasn't talking to her as his friend, he was in his business mode, he was speaking like he planned to make her his latest acquisition.

She was hurt.

She didn't know when he had gotten so unfeeling, so cold. She was aware he liked to handle his business like some Ice King, but she never thought he would transfer that attitude to her. He was like her brother., what sane minded person slept with her brother?

She could still remember every word that followed after that

"No." Her voice was solid, telling of a resolve that would not be changed come hell or high water.

He narrowed those dark eyes of his menacingly. Eyes that had looked upon her with warmth for many years were suddenly cold, "Excuse me?" He ground out.

She was taken aback by his tone, but not enough to shift ground, "Lanre, you're like my brother..."

"I am not your brother, your brother...both of your brothers are dead."

That was it for her. In blind rage, she walked up to him and hit him as hard as she could. How dare he speak those words to her? How dare he use her pain against her?

She suddenly felt his hand on her throat. He was choking her, she clawed at the object restricting the air from her lungs unsuccessfully.

He stood to his full 6ft. 2" height, his dark eyes looked down upon her smaller 5ft. 4" frame. The rage she saw in those eyes left her mortified, "Let this be the first and the last time, you will EVER raise your hand against me, are we clear?"

She nodded in panic, her hands tugging against his which failed to ease up on her throat

"ARE WE CLEAR?!" He roared.

"Yes." She gasped out, fear gripping her heart, if his hand remained on her throat any longer, she would surely die of suffocation.

Thankfully, he released her, she doubled over and went into a coughing fit. She didn't know how long she coughed before he handed her some water in a plastic cup. She grabbed it and drank it all in one gulp.

Once she felt better, she stood as straight as she could and stared at the monster that had seized control of her best friend's body. No, this man wasn't her Lanre. This wasn't the Lanre that had agreed to tell no one of her injuries as long as she let him treat them when they were younger. This wasn't the Lanre that had been to all of her graduation ceremonies from her nursery years till her University. This was another...creature, a cold beast.

Only 3 words could leave her lips after their stare down, "Who are you?"

The sound of groaning broke her out of her thoughts and she rushed to Lanre's side, forgetting their disagreement. She looked down at him with hopeful eyes as he finally opened his. For the first time in a week, she smiled.

It took a while for him to focus his eyes, she thought of calling in a nurse, but chose to be selfish and savour a few minutes alone with him before anyone else interrupted.

He narrowed his eyes at her like he was trying to place her face, she didn't notice. Instead, she stroked his defined jaw, "Lanre, thank God you're awake. I've missed you."

He looked even more puzzeled at that and studied her face before croaking out, "Lanre? Is that my name?"

The question caught her offguard for a moment, and then it hit her. The doctor had said he had amnesia

the exams aren't over yet dear. We're finishing September 3rd.

I'm through with the worst of it though, have just 2 papers left. This story just came to me this afternoon and I had to write it

Chapter Two

His eyes swept through the room, giving everyone who came for him a quick glance. Trying desperately to recognise any one of them, the doctor had said they were his family. Why couldn't he remember any one of them? The only face that stood out was that of the girl.

Her name was Jaiyanma. That was the only name that was ingrained in his head, it sounded vaguely familiar and from the way she smiled at him, even now that she knew he couldn't remember her, he could tell they had had a good relationship. It was a little unsettling that she was the one he felt most connected to.

He looked at his family, his mother, a moderately sized, light-skinned woman who was watching him with tear-stained eyes, she looked like she was trying her damned best to not lose it in his presence. When he first woke up, she was overjoyed. There was a glimmer in her beautiful eyes that had dimmed once she failed to see the recognition in his.

His eyes shifted to the other female in his family- his older sister. He was yet to be told by how many years but he didn't think it was by much. She was very pretty, he was told he had a nephew and a brother-in-law both of whom had visited while he was out. He planned to spend some time with them once he left the hospital. Since he couldn't remember having 'the talk' with his brother-in-law, he supposed he'd have it now....he couldn't remember.

Damn, that was all levels of fvcked up. The past 5 days he had been recuperating, he had been trying his hardest to remember something...anything. He couldn't. His brain was as blank as a whiteboard. At some point, he had been pissed off at himself, so pissed he had thrown a tantrum and scared off one of the nurses attending to him. The past 24 hours though had been filled with deep thoughts, realisation and acceptance.

He had amnesia. If he couldn't get back his old memories, it was best he started making new ones.

His eyes drifted to his father. He found him rather...imposing. He seemed to envelope the entire room, he wasn't huge, just tall, his expression was hard to read and he had a feeling that went for the man as a person. He didn't seem like one who was thoroughly interested in family time and there was an underlying discomfort in his stance that made Lanre think he didn't like the current situation the least bit.

"Mr. Coker, Mr. Coker."

Lanre's gaze shot to the doctor who was standing beside him once he realized he was being spoken to, the man was almost as old as his father, but he didn't look as menacing, there was a warmth in his eyes that had a calming effect on him, "Yes." He replied

The doctor smiled, "As you've been told, you're being discharged today, but make sure to visit at least 3 times for a check up. I've recommended some medications for you, you may have migraines once in a while. Make sure to not stress yourself much and of course eat healthy."

"I'll make sure of that doctor."

It was the older woman- his mother, who spoke. Lanre's eyes went to her briefly, and then shifted to the doctor again. He hoped he didn't have to stay with them, he would be very uncomfortable, especially with the big, imposing man in the room who was still giving him that look like...like he was a lost cause. It almost felt like the man was mourning years of hard work.

He watched the rest of the proceedings half-heartedly, unable to stop his eyes from constantly moving to the female who was family, but not really family. Her eyes never lost their smile. She was quite a looker, her skin was a beautiful caramel, her eyes dark but beautiful, her lips full and inviting. His eyes had lingered on them a little, she wasn't tall, about average height, she looked...appealing.

She caught him staring, she didn't give him a bashful smile, instead, her smile faltered a little before she lowered her eyes, he thought that somewhat odd. He wanted to wonder more on that, but it was time to leave.

He was wheeled out of the hospital and helped into an SUV by his sister and Jaiya, it was quite the task helping him into the SUV, he was a bit angered once he was inside the car. It wasn't a good feeling being this dependent on others...especially virtual strangers.

He was silent through most of the ride...well, the entire car was silent, everyone was engrossed in their thoughts. Lanre stared out the window at passing houses, he was told he had spent all his life in Lagos, yet as they passed the streets, business districts and a few shopping malls, he couldn't remember any of it. He looked on hoping something would come to him, there had to be something out here to jerk his memory.

"Mr. Coker, I'll stop at the next junction."

His attention was reeled back in by Jaiya's sweet voice, it was soft and soothing...and then he realised what she said. She was leaving him?

"Okay dear, are you sure you won't get home with us?" His father asked her.

"No sir, I can't, I...I have some work to do."

Her eyes flickered to him briefly as she said what he decided was a lie. Why? He had this gnawing feeling that he made her uncomfortable somewhat, and it annoyed him that he didn't know why.

"Okay then." His father replied bringing an end to the conversation.

"Can't it wait?" Lanre didn't realise he had spoken until everyone turned to him. He couldn't help himself after some minutes, he didn't want her to leave yet. She was the only one that seemed somewhat familiar and her presence soothed him.

He noticed his mother switch pleading eyes to Jaiya who looked extremely uncomfortable now. He didn't know if she would change her mind, but he was hoping so.

"I...I don't think..."

"We won't keep you long dear. Just an hour will do, George will soon come over and he'll drive you home. Just help Lanre settle in." His mother pleaded.

George, that was Moremi's husband. So he was going to meet him sooner than he expected.

"Okay." Was her simple reply. For the rest of the drive, she seemed rather enthralled with her fingers, he found that cute. He found her cute, but there were more pressing issues at hand like regaining his memory.

That was very important, maybe if he got back some of it, he would be able to make sense of all that was going on, and most especially, why Jaiya was suddenly so wary since she caught him staring at her at the hospital
