Growing up was fun,we grew up in an area where
brothers in our street take us as their siblings in
other words all younger kids in area become their
sibling. They take us classes from yoruba
reading,follow us to inter-street match venue,they
take us after school lesson etc the whole of my area
Alakuko lagos state to be precise was a good
environment to develop as a kid though few bad
heads exist. my question is this why do such value
become eroded/become history in our society; gone are
the days where u can correct a kid and d parent will
thank u,dis days no brother to mentor all we have
now is internet where a lot of info exist but to get d
right info mentor is still inevitable.

Coach ke? I was not fortunate to have one. I grew up learning most things the hard way. I wouldn't be struggling with life now If I had such opportunity. However, I'm alive, hale and hearty.

The only person I could say touched my life in a profound way was Mr Paul from Kishi Oyo State. He was a teacher in Kwara state them. I don't know where he is now but I really pray that God pay attention to his issues.

He was a mentor in his little way.

I was my own mentor, my own inspiration. My main motivation was the fear of being average and normal.

Ok Ok.......

With God's help and infinite grace.

Yeah well, it gets like that. Especially when those you look up to haven't got time for you or worse still you don't even have anyone to do that.

At Such times, I found mine in me.

I was "un-mentorable" when I was growing up. I was eager to discover things on my own, at my own pace. Stubborn too...very stubborn. My Dad understood this and did a bit of monitoring until a certain age.

The only form of mentoring I remember is reading books and (auto) biographies. I just pick whatever lesson I want and throw the subject away. I didn't want to get attached to anybody or any figure. I just wanted to learn and grow...my own way.

Exactly. My own is that I had around me people who were capable of mentoring me but basically left me to wander aimlessly without vision. I wasted 4 years of my life making mistakes upon mistakes while they just sat by the sidelines watching me.

Nonetheless as God may have it, the lessons I learnt from those mistakes of yesteryears have now turned out to be priceless!!!

I can say my dad, that man was a genius + workaholic, the way he solved or went round unsolvable problems without stress was a beauty to behold. During his day, he was the youngest employee of the bank he worked with in the early 70s, left the banking industry in 1991 to start his own company, so yeah I looked up to him for everything.
So when he died a week after I collected my B.Eng certificate I was a wreck, cos that was when I really needed his advice most.
After that, God has been my only coach and his grace and guidance have always been present in my life.
