When I was in secondary school, I use to here the notion, "Shorter day, longer night," and the vice versal. My question is: has it been scientifically proven, or it's just another rumor common in secondary school.

The answer lies in the fact that you have not travelled much. Go to Europe Australia and so many other parts of the world and you'll never doubt the phenomenon. The further you move from the equator, the more glaring the phenomenon. Even people in Places like Borno in Nigeria experience it to a greater degree that the southern parts of the country.

Pack your bags, see the world, expand you view.

Goodluck

No one has rily answered ur question. Its not a matter of travelling out, as not everyone can afford to. Now to answer u in simple terms, it gets to a certain tym when the days seem longer and the night seem short. When d day seem longer @ times like 8pm, the sky will still be bright and d night will seem short cos when its 5am or there about the sky is bright. When u have we have shorter days and longer nIghts, the sky becomes dark early and @ tyms like 6am the sky is still dark making u think its still night. Capish? Dat simple

like diceman1 said, you won't observe the phenomenon well because you are close to the equator (centre of the earth).

Lemme try to break down the technical explanation behind it. I hope it will be easy for me to explain and easy for you to comprehend.

Firstly, the earth -just like every other planet- revolves round the sun on a "route" called orbit.

thirdly, the earth is slightly tilted on its orbit (at an angle of 23.5 I guess) such that not all parts of it is equally exposed to the sun and gets equal sunshine at every point in time.

Secondly, the earth can be divided into two equal halves called (the North South hemispheres)
This tilting is the reason for the difference in sunshine (daylight) and shade (night). the area tilted towards the sun gets greater sunshine and thus longer days. The area tilted away from the sun gets lesser sunlight and thus more night.

But because we are close to the centre of the earth, the effect of the tilting will affect us less. but as you move towards any of the two poles (north or south) you will experience it more.

So, it will be more pronounced in the US or Russia than Nigeria because they are closer to one of the two poles than Nigeria.

Once you understand this a little it will be easy to understand two dates or events or phenomena related to this tilting. The two occur every year.

They are the solstices, equinoxes.

The equinox is the time when all parts of the earth receive equal sunshine. This implies equal day and equal night all around the earth.
It occurs twice a year, around 21st March and 23rd September.

The solstice is when one of the two "tips or ends" of the earth called north and south poles of the earth receive complete sunshine and no shade meaning 24hrs of daylight.
Interesting enough, when the North Pole is having it's complete daylight, the South Pole will be having it's complete night time or darkness and vice versa.

The days are 21st of December (winter solstice) and 21st of June (summer solstice).

The South Pole experiences complete daylight and no sunset during the winter solstice, by implication the North Pole enjoys complete night and no sunset at the same time.
The opposite occurs during the summer solstice.

Because Nigeria is below the equator i.e In the southern hemisphere, it will experience longer day December when the South Pole will be having it's complete day and no night.
So also we will have our shortest days during the June period.
