Its we the farmers that will have to dictate the price of fish not the market women.. Lack of cooperation has been the barrier in increasing the price of fish, we need to have a voice or the united market women keep dictating the price..

@house, action time for me
i have bought 250 gallons.tank for fsh farming. i want to site it in my backyard( rented apartment). we already hv borehole whch is free of chemical treatment. how many fish can d tank contain to maturity?
The location i want to site the tank, which is farthest from d gen house , will have rain water from the zinc falling into d tank. Do you think it will affect d fish?

i know its small but i want to start off immediately and start gaining experience b4 i move to my permanent site where i will erect concrete ponds. i will be feeding withforeign feeds till 3 months or 4 months b4 i move to durante. i noticed d size of d feed differ in mm.
whats d exact size to be fed and at wat age?
what is the ideal quantity of feed to be fed a fish per day?
when feedin fish, do u feed till they stop eating?
how do u do sorting? do u use net or bucket.
can fish bite ?

plz dont laugh at d last questn. its nt dt am scared, afterall i kill chicken by myself b4 cooking it.

Must a fish pond be outside? can it be inside a house? Do u think the oxygen level inside a house will be ok for fish? i ask this question cos we have an unrented house in our compound that i know d landlord can give me if i ask him. The fish pond will also be secure in d house cos it will be under lock.

NB- I am still trying to finish reading the thread frm d 1st page.

Lolz, Sintl, now that NSE is on RED, na Catfish farming remain, while i wait for the PRO to answer your other questions, i think i can answer this, Fishes Can Bite, but catfish have a Pinlinke stuff on there head that can pierce into the skin, but with Proper handling, they wont. Am just about to start my own farm too, but am going with earthen pond

#so many questions! First and foremost, have u joined www.agricnetwork.com #plz do, if u havent.
Also, if u are interested, snd me a msg to join the FISH FARMERS' whatsapp grp : 08023000802

#secondly, the experience u will gain starting small will go a long way in acheiving success wen u do it on a larger scale.

#concerning d rain water, it wont affect ur fishes per se... But mind u, theres a disclaimer here, ur ponds/tanks will over-flow wt d slightest rain if its collecting water frm d roof. Also, dirt and other contaminants on d roof will flow straight into ur tanks.
#Feeds come in various sizes for d different sizes/stages of fish. I suggest u go through this thread to understand feed mgt. It has been dealt with extensively several times on d thread. The size of feed u give d fish will depend on the size of fish u av.
#You should feed ur fish till satiation! (dats one method of feeding and d most common method used here). U will notice dat dey are no more eating and den u stop. DON'T POLLUTE THE WATER WITH UNCONSUMMED FEED.
#For sorting, u can use nets, sieve, buckets, bowls etc. It all depends on how easy u want ur work to be. The essence is dat at d end of d day u dnt over stress d fishes and dey av been arranged in various sizes!
DONT WORRY, DEY WONT 'BITE' U IF U ENTER THE POND WEN D WATER IS DRAINED. They dnt even av teeth.
Fishes will attempt to 'come' for ur finger/hand if u put it in d water especially wen dey havent been fed. Its natural, dey tink its food.
I wont advice u enter a pond dats full of water and stocked with fishes bcoz u might panic and drown since u seem apprehensive abt d fishes biting. Be cautious and know ur limitations.
#just saying, are u sure u kill ur chicken urself? cheesy Lol
#The pond can be inside a house/shed.

#below is a pix of me inside my pond trying to sort my fishes. As u can see, dey are not biting me! cheesy grin used a net to pack d fishes.

Sales is good in Ikorodu especially if you have at least one or two regular "fish buyers". But what is common is indirect links but that is good also.
Plus melange sells faster around here at about 390-400naira per kilo.
I'll post this in agricnetwork too. wink

bitl, nse didnt send me to agric section. one needs to have many streams of income and be employer of labour. That has always been my dream even while an undergraduate. I have even spent more time in paid employment than i planned to. i plan to have an integrated farm which will include fishery. I will acheive that by Gods grace even iit takes 7 yrs to get there.,This thread has so much info and well meaning Nigerians.

@Belexy, thanks so much. will check out agric network shortly.

My dad once told me sumtin when i was in primary sch. He said, 'anything u put ur mind in, u can acheive it.' That has been my driving force. Together we will all acheive this. We will learn, share experience, re-learn and also share experience.

Having read up to this page i can say that i have completed my Fishery 101 and thanks must be giving to the gurus in the house who make this discussion robust, educative and informative, thanks to Robonski 15, Exellecorfarm, Abx 1, Juve farm, Phemmy, Ayosat and other gurus in the house.

This has led me into going into next stage by seeking practical consultation within my area in Abuja to know the viability of the business, this led me to a consultant with a degree in Fishery who express his reservation on fish farming in this part of the country for following reasons:
According to him,

1. Fish business is more viable in the south compare to north
2. Earthen pond is better than concrete pond because of its ability to absorb wastes and less usage of water
3. The cost of foreign feeds has increased from N2500 to over N5000 in the last 10years without the correspondent increase in the cost of fish
4. The profit after the cost of feed does not measure with the input and labour
5. The same amount of input would generate more returns when ventured into poultry

Although most his concerned have been discussed in the post above, yet the different in location south/north could make a big different in success or failure of catfish business. While i believe there exist different means of maximising profit among fish farmers in the south by the usage of local and formulated feed to reduce the expenses and increase the profit because of the availability of the components in different parts of the south, the same cannot be said about fish farmers in Abuja who largely depend on foreign feeds from inception to maturity.

How can a farmer in Abuja make profit despite the huge cost of foreign feed and non availability of local component to formulate local feeds that are less expensive?

Please i need answered to the questions from the farmers in Abuja and environs and other gurus i.e. Robonski, Exellecorfirm, Abx 1 and others who have been genuinely impacting, educating and sharing their knowledge free of charge on this forum

I intend rearing learning hatching to get my seed to be stocked in 2 10X10 concrete ponds beginning from January

Also when digging a borehole what should be the needed water level for catfish rearing, i heard of something like [neutral] dont really understand it

Also what is the cost effect of flow through system over concrete pond that uses aerator to supply the needed oxygen

My brother, u will learn as it goes by but my advice is never shock them(by that I mean, a sudden change in temp. PH etc), maintain good water management and feed properly(better to underfeed than overfeed), funny enough, let the fishes tell U what to do(what I mean here is with ur knowledge already, observe them and flow with them) above all pray hard cos borrowing to start hatching is a risk cos it evn fails profs.
Still a novice so I stand to be corrected

Your opinion on the above question is welcome

i think abix1 stays n abuja.. to reduce d cost of feeding, u can introduce local feed after 2months or 1and half months. U can see hw to make local feed in d link i commended . The video was very elaborate.. u can also check abix posts on formulating loca feed. u can replace soya bean with bambara nut (okpa seed) if soya is expensive.

My advise is start small and test for urself. it wil help u get firsthand info . u can divide ur fish into two, introduce local feed to one set after one and half months and introduce local feed to the other set after 3 or 4 months. write down every expense u make on each of the set . After harvest check the return on investment on each of the group, This will help u to know which one is better.

For those living in warri, i heard govt has ponds which they lease out at very small fee. They provide water as well as security. There are lots of farmers occupying diff ponds. They pick diff dates which they sell their fish and no 2 ppl sell on the same day. During the harvest days, traders come to the farm and buy. I think they have fixed price for each measurement/ weight of fish.

A friend gave me the info above and told me dts what the inlaw (marrying the younger sis) do.
The guy was so impressed with the return that he is planning to venture into same.
