All my friends know I'm agnostic. I stopped going to church since last year, Finally told my parents religion isn't for me. My dad is an MFM pastor. My folks can't force religion on anyone, very open minded people

I'm an academic, so in my academic circles, I freely discuss about my irreligiousity and I'm notorious for shutting religious academics up in my school. To their credit, they're much easier to debate than folks on Nairaland because they are scientifically minded, and are given to reason.

Whenever I visit my parent's home though, I'm a closet atheist, not because my family will harm me, but because my mama is quite the drama queen, so I don't want to ruffle her feathers because no matter what, mummy is mummy, if you know what I mean...

I am an atheist and I am open. All my family and friends know. However, I try to avoid discussions related to religion (especially with Nigerians) because no good can come out of it. Most will see you as a lost soul and are not open to alternative views.

I shove it into peoples faces just as they me. i always enjoy the feeling of shock and disappointment and fear i get from people when i tell them i don't believe in God and add that if he were smarter than the average joe, i might even hazard the thought. I let my beliefs hang-out.. e.g I made a few t-shirts with the inscription F@#uck u GOD. I am an atheist and I wear it on weekends, especially around Shoprite Ikeja. I won't try that with Allah though, they could easily dump their human costumes to reveal the rabid animals they truly are.. so i am careful, you don't want a rabies epidermic in crowded Lagos.. sambisa forest maybe

My mum is a religious fanatic that can not be reasoned with what so ever. logic and reason when it comes to issues of religion means nothing to her(fear and irrational indoctrination is what drives her when it comes to religion), she is an end of day enthusiast(she seriously believes we are in the end of days and Jesus will return during her life time, she TRULY believes that 10000%). . .My siblings are also religious the Nigerian way. . . My friends in Nigeria don't give a damn. I move with people in the higher end of the social ladder, most aren't so religious, some of the muslims are more observant of their religious creeds than the christians but over all they don't care much.To them all we need to do is just keep making money, because that is the only real GOD in Nigeria, the rich know that very well. . . So my friends over all are not so religious but religious all the same. . .My girl friend is the only one that knows am completely irreligious in Nigeria and she doesn't care. . .She calls me a pagan (I love her to death). . .Here in Europe people don't care, even the Nigerians here aren't that religious, the very religious ones are also tolerant, if you tell them you are an atheist they just say "You sef don join them abi?" and the discussion, engagement or transaction you are engaged in with them continues, they won't avoid you or demonize you the way they will if you were in Nigeria. The are very tolerant because most of the whites around are not religious. . .They notice that even though the whites are not religious they seem morally superior to them, so that has affected how they reason or see religion as a whole. . .Life out here in general has really changed their mindset. . .I was surprised to see some muslim Nigerians living here saying that gays should be left alone and should not be imprisoned. . .Staying here really has a way of opening people's minds and making them tolerant and makes them to accommodate other people's life style that differs from theirs. . .

I second this comment. Staying in the west really open ur eyes to a lotta things and u start seeing and understanding things differently.

I'm not an atheist btw, I just don't understand many of the religious stuff, they seriously need to keep their stories straight, these days, I try so hard not to get into religious topics, they always give me the "you are doomed" look, even when I know they are planning on committing 'sin' after the discussion,so I leave them to their business.

I do go to church sometimes though .

Assemblies of God brought up, you know what I mean.


My dad is well known almost all over the Assemblies of God churches in Aba. An Organist by profession, a music tutor and a Trinity College of Music graduate, he'd be more than heart broken to learn that one of his sons(his favourite) is an agnostic.

Was born and bred in Assemblies of God here in Ibadan. My whole family knows. Both immediate and Extended. Both in Europe and America.but I don't give a hoot. Former church members. A reverend even called me not too long ago. It's their wahala sha.I got my life to live jare.

Most people who proffess beliefs in God ,studies have shown do so reflextively. In certain circumstances their faith is shaken terribly.The Godly believe dont give a hoot there is God o in his or her immediate course of action Afterwards they would quickly fall back in line dogmatically because that is the right thing to do And then blame satan. Conclusion; almost everyone, strictly speaking, is guilty at one moment or the other of atheism.

'twas not his doings . try commenting on any thread in "Islam for Muslims" section and swear allegiance to Muhammed yourself.

I wouldn’t advice any atheist in this part of the world, and at this period, to be open about it, especially if the atheist’s socio-economic and or political support structure are strongly influenced by religion, it could make getting the simplest tasks, especially those requiring cooperation, into the most complicated of challenges.

I must confess one thing though, I don’t exactly see myself as an atheist in the sense the lay man considers it to be, that is one who professes that there is no God. I’ve never made that claim anywhere before and I’m not making such a claim even now.

For one to say there is no God, I think you’d have to have prove, else do not feel offended if you’re referred to as an idiot when you make such an unverifiable claim. I however see the other side the same way too, if you say or claim there is a God somewhere out there, then you’d just have to prove it, or accept whatever ridicule you receive in response to your claim.

I don’t think the fact that I do not consider the contents of the leading holy books, especially as regards history, as non-factual, makes me an atheist, but then again maybe it does, after all, it’s all in the way you look at it, no?

Again, maybe I am, and maybe I’m not.

The truth is we’re all atheists, agnostics, theists and what have you, towards one belief or the other, no one is exempted.

A muslim is an unbeliever to a Christian, likewise a christian is an unbeliever (Kaffir) to a muslim.

An Ifa practitioner is an unbeliever to both the christian and the muslim.

This thread reminds me my days of atheism,never agreed with anyone about things of God

Never knew I had a spiritual problem which I always refuse to accept its reality whenever it occurs,always looking for a physical excuse to hold onto when ever it manifest

Till it got to a stage I could no longer disregard,I had to run for my dear life,I ran to mountain of fire for back up

The truth of this matter be say,I'll never blame any atheist because I used to be one,I only see them now as people who never had any encounter with anything spiritual,although some of them do but refuse to accept it like I used to
