erico2k2:have you worked in a structured environment before ? what do you think experience means really ? you think it is about knowing the technical skills , man you gain managerial skills also . majority of nigerian business dont go international just because of the way it is run . I wish for my business to go international and thats why I believe I can get these skills both from an education abroad and current work in a place where I can acquire great managerial skills . my idea of a successful business man may be different from yours as you may see yourself as successful operating only in your little niche. how cxan you say what your company does cannot build on your skills .... come on , are you sure you graduated with good grades at all . I can go on and on mentioning names of Nigerians running a successful business and when you read their profile they link their skills development to companies where they have worked . Mr, if you think the only reason people work in organisations to make cash by earning salary then you should read up on that . being an employee is not just about salary man. |

I have a friend who at 17 started a technical job , while doing that he enrolled for an online diploma course , after 6 years he started his own business and also continued wth his edcation , he only had to spend 3 years in the uni . he is not on the same level with majority of his peers that got into school when he opted for the technical job.My point is, if you know your education university will not be of use , why allow it delay you. |

erico2k2:OK , to proove that your argment is wack , I will answer your questions one after the other with examples. 1. you gain business managerial skills working ... you cant deny that 2. yes passion can lead you to work for a someone , if the person or company runs their business they way you want yours to be run ..... why do people go learn trade ? am sure you havent figured this out after alomost 15 years thats it is simply to acquire skills to see their dreams come to reality 3. if it is out of my business /industry of expertise, I got the cash , yes , I got no experience in that business, but I got transferrable manageria skills ....yes .... I can contact him , help him with cash and we share profit . I am still his boss . if I take away my money , the business crashes. I have a relation whose business is not from his capital . all the money in that business is from a bank manager ... and he pays this manager 60 percent of the profit . you understand now 4 . I answered you question in the edited post why you dont have to think 5 years of university makes you educated . kindly read through again . as you have strong knowledge , you ought to have a strong builing company by now. |

majekdom2:ok let me bring more wacky Arguments, I will try and simplify what we are saying so others can contribute. point one you claim you gain Biz mgr skillz while working, let us limit it to your field Oil and gas cos it will be unfair on you if I include fields you aint familiar with. 1, you gain managerial skillz working yes but thats only through working in a management role, now are you employed in a management role? you dont speak like o ne so permit my assumption if so put me right, I know the entry point in teh Oil and gas industry is fru roustabout, even in canada and the Uk same storey,I have been there done that.(U still failed to tell us what it is you do) 2 passion. This has to do with what you wnat to do and achive plus where you want to be,if what it takes means you have to work for somebody so be it,I take myself as an example, cos of ma passion in the construction industry,I spent two years working in the construction industry,I earned great skills, mind you this is in LONDON.I have since found ways of reducing labour cost via machinery,I have up to 45 staffs in Nigeria, I try my best to train and educate them plus Im working on an exchange program for some of them in the UK God willing.(Will point out eh relevance of this in my next post) 3 In this part you where not clear enough, Im trying to figure out what you are trying or meaning to say.If you are insinuating that you have cash and I have expertise you will float my company and you become my Boss then at this point my friend you wont be a Biz man, reason is very logical,I will give you references,I don't know where you work or live, but try and go to theBBC website, check a program called Dragons Den,I believe we have same version in Nigeria but I aint seen it.its about wealthy investors who have cash interviewing people who have Ideas and want to turn them into making money. The max they bought into anyone I have seen is %45 and that's cos of risks involved, that don't make them the BOSS.Now lets look at it this way.You as an Investor ie you have the cash no expertise don't have the option of having expertise there and then cos you rely on the work man.Now the Job man(with the Expertise and no money)has loads of option, option (A) raise money via looking for Employment (B).Take a loan from the bank and start his/her factory(C) Help from friends and family(In my case, I went abroad to raise initial cash at age 22.) So tell me what option have you got as an Investor with cash but no expertise rather than depend on the JobMan?? Im going to read your point number 4 again, lets see what you come up with in my 3 answers upstairs. |

@erico2k2 .... why limit is to oil and gas ? what is business management really ? you dont need to get to a managerial position to gain managerial skills ..... relating with customers , relating with team members and colleagues , managing your team as a leader , managing business time. there are people who feel they need to acquire these skills .... not everyone can read up and practice just like it is not every one that takes the first position . to be successful in life you need to know your strength and weakness ... you dont need to get to the position of a manager before you can gain managerial skills . and yes I am not a manager and what if am a roustabout or floor man . MY making a living is what matters am doing better than the so called " business man ", those positions are for ssce holders and not graduates , sadly they are positions graduates struggle for here ... My current economic status is not hat we are debating 2. So , if someone had told you not to go into the construction industry to gain those skills then and tells you , you can start a business centre business , what would you have done ? and that is what I mean , people need jobs for different reasons .... skills aquisition being major. 3 . you have gone back to the reason we are here , which makes me wonder how you reason .... what brought about my debate with the scout60 guy is he talked down the guy who complained about the employment situation . there are many graduates with great business ideas but have got not means of employment to generate capital ,is it tyhe nigerian banks that will give loans , no family and friends ... I know graduates who sold clothes , had photocopying machines and business centres just to help them trough school . they still applied for jobs .... why becase they knew they needed more capital and better managerial skills to run their dream businesses. .... every one has got their level of contentment which may be different from yours . if you run a business centre as your business does not mean I have to run one to all in the name of starting little . different business with different risk and exposure.I actually ignored him when I found he is the regular jo you meet on here " the usuals that term whatever they do as business" . he earlier suggested truckpushing as a means of generating income for a graduate ..... is that a decent job and yes , the fact that an investor depends on the job man does not make his capital defuncty as long as he is making money. my argument is , some youth still need jobs to gain skills and generte capital .btw you said you graduated in 1999 , I would assume that was when you travelled out cause you said at 22 ..... there is no way you could have graduate at 16 . so with 15 years abroad " LONDON" you should be able to employ some graduates on the job section of this forum then. anyways thats not the argument |

@majekdom2 You like quarrel , wetin the year I travel get to do with the subject matta?anyway in other news.Im limiting it to Oil n Gas cos thats ur field, U wont ava clue in my field and i cant dive into field I got no clue about as I cant represent my arguments with facts. X Relating with customers will give you customer service skills X To manage people effectively you must be a good manager.for you as a supervisor to rise into a management role you will have to be trained to become a manager or better still trained on the Job.Im sure you must have seen this loads in your job X I must say I did not know nor read your response to scout6, however i was drawn by some of your statements hence this talk we are having X Guy let us not kid ourselves, a Business man would always be better off than an Employee X regarding the who needs who you still aint got the gist lol,Im trying to steer you to the statement which says, you as an investor needs the tradesman to accomplish you dream, the choices available to the tradesman are limitless while to the investor there are limits as he needs to go from one tradesman to the next the only option left is for him to practice the trade himself. |

erico2k2:Ok , quite obvious you got real life experience ... which eever customer service or managerial skills it is all business managing skills . I am never against being an entrepreneur , thts the best .but please we should try to correct this notion that all business men are better than employees and vice versa .... would you say a spare part dealer who has only one shop is better than an employee who is a manager in a multinational ..... the manager manages different resources plus humans while the business man manages his only shop plus say 2 shop boys. It gets annoying when you hear an incompetent business man says am " a business man " and then talks down the employee like he has got no dreams because he is an employee. my statements that you read were inferred from the previous discussions I had with the guy. and as for the trades that is why it is always advisable to invest in your area of expertise or where you got knowledge. * how I take like fight .... I only inferred rom what you said now . anyways thats not the issue being debated . as long as you are making money and blessing those around you . #cheers |
