Dear Hammed,
Remain strong. You will be well Insha Allah.

Fellow Forumites,
Let's save the rhetoric and put in place concise plan of action. Time is of essence here. I suggest we have a group of say 5 Forumites to decide on the modus operandi and we follow. We've expended 36 freaking pages already on banters!
I suggest the egg-head group include:
1. @caracter: for the role played so far having the confidence of the Op.
2. At least 2 forumites with sound medical or paramedical background to decipher these chains of acronyms.
3. An enthusiastic forumite geographically close to the Op.
4. Any other member(s) highly committed to this cause.

As for me, I pledge my support and shall woo those of folks around me to the best of our capacity.

May His mercies shroud you.

which one is awojobi eruwa again? At the risk of sounding pessimistic, DJDOLA I fear for your health at the moment. already you're in a critical stage and u need very very urgent professional care with modern medical equipment and facilities which this hospital lacks. I've googled up on that Abeokuta hospital, and there's nothing reassuring there to put my mind at rest.

You and your brother are more learned than your parents.. if you're weak to do it, convince ur brother to make ur parent and uncle see reason why awojobi is not the best choice for you! this is not a regular sickness or broken bones for pete's sake!

A lot of medical professionals in the house have recommended Indian hospitals, reddington, UCH, lagoon, or EKO hospital. Whereas Your uncle is not a medic professional, he can't just recommend any hospital for you. If its because of embarrassment you've refused to go to LUTH try the other options stated above. Pls and pls ur health is very paramount right now..

In fact I'm going to call ur mum tomorrow and try my best to convince her. And maybe some pple living around him should try to visit them and convince his family.

Gosh I'm unhappy with this new decision..I've a bad feeling bout it..it refuse to go

they ought to have d department as a subdivisiin of medicine. d chempath dpart shud include plasma/Ascitis albumin ratio in d test series n it seem he will need a ventilator pending when d mass is removed or fluid drained.. i wud av also like to know his current feeding, urination and stooling patterns n how long has dis condition presented..

Hopefully they should.

He says he can only eat Pap and ogi. And apparently his stomach doubled in size at LUTH, so there's probably some malnutrition going on.

Hope he can comment further on the questions you raised as well as the questions Babyosisi raised in her last post!

@DJDOLA

I can imagine the degrading treatment and harassment you and your family were subjected to at LUTH, so I can't blame you for recoiling with horror at the thought of being sent back there.

You could get an ambulance to UCH or to the trado-medical place recommended to you by your folks.

After all has been said and done, the final decision still rests with you and we will respect your final decision. Wish you speedy recovery.

And I believe it's not about money and know your family mean well for you, otherwise they would have taken you to a N5,000k "elewe-omo" and not a Hospital where they would pay N400,000k...so don't let some people's posts get to you.

@DJBOLA, i read your last post which says that forumites should not give up on you but i am afraid that might eventually happen if you choose to follow your mum to Abeokuta. Having been warned by forumites to desist from going to Abeokuta in search of what was not lost there, How would you come back to inform them (forumites) that the Abeokuta trip was not successful? I can't imagine people sending you their hard earned money to get a better healthcare but only for you and your mum or whoever to insist on this Abeokuta jamboree trip. Trust me on this, nobody can force you to go to Abeokuta without your consent and if she is using her presence in hospital to hold you to ransom, then, we ll raise someone here, local to you to take up the responsibility.

Since your mind has been made up about how bad you were treated at Luth, would you now make your way to UCH Ibadan where you have access to all sort of specialists please?

Finally, i ll use this opportunity to inform Mod, Admin or Seun to keep your Thread on frontpage everyday, otherwise new frontpage threads would overshadow your thread as you can see now unlike yesterday when it was on top of the list.

I opened this thread yesterday among many others but only got the chance to view it this morning. I believed the OP's case right from the 1st page but just managed to read up to this 36th page now to know what had transpired and the present situation.

DJDOLA, I can help with my own tangible contribution but I'm out of decent Internet signal reach till about Friday. I promise you that I would contribute as soon as I can get access to decent internet, I have your necessary details and I would even try by tomorrow morning.

That being said, I think you should listen to the voice of reason. Many qualified medical professionals have advised that you should go to a proper specialist hospital (Government or Private) and have even started making enquires on your behalf. From their examination of your medical test results, what you have has advanced beyond elementary medical treatment. The most you might get from your Abeokuta treatment would just be an attempt to manage the symptoms. The decision is ultimately yours to take.

Thanks Nairalanders for your support.

Lastly, I wonder what kind of country we have here. Leaders go abroad for medical check-ups and treatment. I guess the ramshackle hospitals we call teaching hospitals (especially that death zone called LUTH) are not good enough for them but we the citizenry have to settle for them. Why can't we have a universal health insurance for all Nigerians, even if we have to make do with what is on offer in our country?

I hope we rise one day with the unison exhibited here and fight for a true republic of equal citizenship. Not fighting with weapons, but with our votes and firm demand of accountability from our public SERVANTS.

We have fought ourselves for too long, our anger must be directed to the political class.

Good morning to all esteemed Nairaland Members, I need some urgent help on this matter.

I just called the OP and spoke to his elder brother Wasiu, he told me that they have been to LUTH and did all the scan but yet LUTH found nothing wrong with him. So they were advice to go try a more equipped Hospital in Lagos, my questions is.

1. What is the name of that Specialist hospital where the Late Dr.Adedovoh that fought the Ebola outbreak in our country located? And do they have the capacity for such an ailment?

2. Is there any Doctor on Nairaland who can talk to me about this Man's ailment and suggest any good reputable hospital around where he lives?

Please I'm not here for any type of Political Correctness but to help this guy back on his feet, I don't indulge in blame game either. So I will advice any member who has something meaningful to contribute to do so without bashing, fighting, bullying, accusing others. Nigeria has diverse culture with diverse way of reasoning, so one man's reasoning can be another's conclusion. I'm saying this to say, we are all different and unique in our own ways of expression and communication.

Like someone said up there, N1,000 Naira times X 100 = N100,000. Please help as your spirit directs you, please help a fellow Nigerian. For me, I will help him beyond the hospital bed. But whatever you can do now will be appreciated and you will rewarded in due season. Thank you Nigerians
My dear Nairalanders, may God bless & reward all who has given 2wards dis course. I just got 2 dis page 11 & want 2 ask a quick question;
If Luth finds nothing wrong with him & is advising taking him 2 a more equipped facility, then why advocating Luth again?

We will not give up on you. My heart is crying for the state of Nigerian hospitals and the horrible attitude of doctors. I understand how badly they treated you at Luth. Try the Abeokuta place but if it doesn't work then the immediate place to go is UCH..Which ever hospital you get to ask the doctor in confidence that if it were to be his son or daughter in your condition where will he advice you to go for treatment. plead with them to tell you the truth if they can truly handle your condition or not. I totally concur with Babyosisi. We don't want them playing delay games with you if they can't cure you...God forbid.

@ojdollars, God bless you. That's where the problem lies. LUTH couldn't find anything after the scan. I've called few doctor friends I know for recommendations. Still waiting for feedback. I just pray something positive comes out. I think extensive scan is needed, hence the need for more money.
@ Caracta; May God bless u abundandantly. Pls quick question 4 u. If Luth found nothing in d scan, why take him der again?

These are small, but important things you should be doing for yourself:

1. Good rest, and eat well
2. Avoid constipation, avoid small cuts anywhere in your body, even shaving, because you will bleed a lot.
3. Tell us the results of those lab tests we saw on you hospital folder, they are called CEA and Ca19-9, because it will help us focus on pancreatic vs liver, vs biliary, vs colon cancer; especially if you want to know whether liver transplant would be an option for you.
4. Avoid acetaminophen, Tylenol or paracetamol as they call it in Nigeria, because it is broken down in you liver, and if your liver is already weak, it will simply cause you more liver damage.
5. Chose somebody in your family you trust to make good decisions for you just in case you become unable to communicate, or develop a condition called hepatic encephalopathy. In this condition, patient are confused, disoriented, and agitated initially, and then begin to breath fast, and may even die, because of ammonia accumulation in the brain.
6. We hope it will not happen, but you should buy a bottle of medicine called lactulose, and keep it by your side now. Send someone to buy it from a reputable pharmacy.
If you become weaker than normal, have a constipation, or unusually confused, take 20ml liquid by mouth every 12 hrs. You would pass a large watery stool when it begins to work, and it will instantly reduce your blood ammonia level and literary wake yo up from "sleep"

smh the OP needs an exploratory laparatomy to see exactly whats going on inside that not withstanding once it has gotten to the stage of malignant ascites its a grave prognosis a surgeon might be able to debaulk or excise the tumor if any and if it has advanced to carcinomatosis then they might leave in place a drain which in itself it is a palliative measure i feel for the op but i think the damage has been done already.

Decompensated liver disease means that the medications and treatments used to treat the cirrhosis is no longer working very well and the liver is near total failure. When symptoms can no longer
be controlled with drugs, then that means
it is decompensated. It is the very last stage of cirrhosis. Chronic means it is an ongoing problem that does not go away.

I took my time to deliberately explain this so we all know what we are dealing with. this guy needs a liver transplant and must be flown out if we cannot run that process in Nigeria.

I was accused by r231 of talking nonsense
Let them keep suggesting LUTH and SUTH and all points in between
Let us not gather here a few weeks and months and shout RIP
This is the time to prevent that from happening

The Doctor (Endocrinologist) who saw him at LUTH a&e is "querying" CLD. The diagnosis is not firm and unconfirmed, hence reason they requested he undergoes further scans...

If those tests and CT scan was all that was carried out so far, all this indicates is that the Doctor suspected a cancerous tumour/internal bleeding and tested for this...so the only clinical investigation so far only reveals Ascites.

Definitive diagnosis is only made after a biopsy and not from a scan
Those differentials listed are pretty much on the money
They don't do liver biopsy in Nigeria,at least I have never heard of it but the blood tests and symptoms can pretty much tell what the patient has.
The scans and biopsies are just further confirmatory for what they suspect
Ascites is not a diagnosis,it is a symptom

Having a scan with no further plan as to what to do with the result is a waste of money
The scan won't tell anything much different from what they already know especially if there is no plan to solve the problem
After the scan what next?

@ naijaking contrary to what we think, acetaminophen or paracetamol in reduced amounts is the safest medicine he can take for pain
I am just finishing up a manuscript on pain control in cirrhosis and I have read extensively on that recently and rehearsed my pharmacology
My greatest fear for him is encephalopathy and HRS
He mentioned earlier that he is not able to pee,I fear he may also have HRS.
We are now looking at a patient that perhaps requires dialysis in addition to get rid of toxins
This is not looking good physically speaking
