unsuitable in the sense of not considered good enough because of some qualities beyond your control eg background, ethnicity etc.

ok, since nobody seems to have experienced this type of thing (either its too embarassing or I'm the only one in this situation), then I'll continue.

Were they prevented from or were they not interested in befriending you because you're not suitable?

How did you cope with the rejection?
well, one of my main policies is , if it doesnt seem to be happening then perhaps its not meant to be.

coping with <<perceived>> rejection is easier when you dont have unrealistic expectations or outlook.

you really dont want to be a square peg in a round hole anyway, very uncomfortable for all involved. If its not a good fit then it simply isnt, and you shouldnt push it.

This hurt my feelings, see how you're blowing hot and cold, darn.
You never strike me as one that had feelings...

I've never been considered unsuitable as a friend, but I've considered a lot of people unsuitable as friend. I do not need a list to remember them. The moment i see/interact with such a person, i'll know for sure and if my actions cannot spell it out then I'll have to convey the message verbally.

The question has nothing to do with people's behaviour, but rather their background.

Posters should please stop pretending to miss this important point. I know yall get it but are feigning ignorance.

I think it's too early to jump into conclusion.

I once had a friend who thought I dressed in a certain a way and had to change. She eventually started dressing like me though. People should accept people for who they are. Friendship is important but not the kind of friends that talks thrash behind your back. Or the kinds that runs for cover when you need them. The kind of friends that protects you in front of people even when you are wrong but chastise you when you guys get to your personal space.

Many are just friends of the moment. If you know them as such, treat them as such. Personally I don't go where I'm not appreciated. If someone Has issues with me for Whatever reason, it's his/her loss! I can be a good friend and a bad friend, depends on who's on the other side.
The adage that says that the goat that befriends a dog will eat poo doesn't apply to me. Grass and shiit, ain't the same.

Personally, I don't even consider all that, I just immediately remove them from my mind and move on.

I notice the expected reaction is what you posted, its not that way for me at all.
