My driver once took me to his mechanic to help us check the alternator... The mechanic checked it by bridging something and I saw a spark.. Then he said the Alternator was bad.. I said to him but I saw a spark how come is bad. I decided to take it to an electrician who confirmed to me and the driver that the Alternator was working perfect.. He simply used a meter tester to test it..... Notice the difference.. Mechanic caused a spark while electrician used tester..

Depending on the fault always take your ride to the right specialist.. That way you will save unnecessary spending...

That is exactly what I do too, just that sometimes, you spend the whole saturday wt the mech guy. They have a way of delaying your work, roaming aimlessly looking for 10 spanner so you can go,then they will lose something new in your car, replace it with their old one, then ask you to bring money. Then, they will refix that your old one as the newly bought one. Just like your experience wt your mechanic,na their trademark oooo.

Whenever I go to the mechanic,I don't leave the vehicle there,in fact, I call them the guy ahead like some 2 - 3days ahead to book an appointment .

Generally, these handwork guys, most of them are liars,be it a tailor, bricklayers, mechanic, plumbers, carpenter, electrician, painter, panel beater, rewire, generator repairer etc. If you are dealing with them, you need to be very smart, forget some of them that claim to be pastors ooo, all na story. By the time they finish with you, your pocket will not be the same again...

Years back, my first car had issues with the clutch. The mechanic said he was going to rub it the disc, while I disagreed with him and opted for total replacement. He vehemently objected to the idea threatening that it would fail only after a week or two and that he could not be held responsible if it did. He said if he did the rubit, he would give me a warranty of two years on the disc. Being a novice, I succumbed. Big mistake!

He fixed it and billed me exhorbitantly and I paid. Fast forward exactly two weeks later and less than 200km, the same clutch fell again. I called him and guess his response...'oga na so clutch dey do na, ask anybody. E fit fail you anytime.' That day I wished that I was renta ghost. I would have disappeared to his location and given him a good beat down. That was the first time and the last he ever touched my car.

Two years later, I invited him to an accident scene involving my friend's car. He was very hopeful and after messing his entire day up for him, we just called another mechanic to fix the car. He had already started throwing figures up and down hoping to make a killing, till we dashed his hopes. Till date, Whenever he sees me, he beefs me and I just ignore him like he doesn't exist. Now I have a mechanic that is a rare breed. Very good at his job and honest. Been working for me for 4 years now, no rip offs. Just time management is his issue.
you really dealt with hm"nicely"...thumbs up

Beware of the mechanic that preaches the word, and even invites you to his church....

Doomsday is around the corner
I already learnt my lesson; trust no mechanik! He will always put his interest first b4 yours. As a rule I keep no less than two mechanics n find out their opinions on every matter independently. The variances in their submissions makes me see why its nit good to rely on just one;hwever I get an assurance when all of them point in a similar direction. I also have guys in d spareparts marKet I cal to confirm the. Price of parts. that way I defuse ruse costs of parts speculated by my mechanic. And when they know yu have a fair idea of things , they straighten up because they wdnt want to loose their customer(You)

My mechanic didn't play me but I saw him play someone eelse and since then I stay while he fix my car.
He finds it irritable but if he doesn't like my presence, he work on my car faster so I leave. My steering locked and I sent the car to him. He said my power steering is bad and he needs to change something I can't remember now and service the car. When he was going to buy the things he felt I have power steering fluid according to him and didn't add it. So when he finished fixing there was no fluid. I called someone to get me money at the mechanic, the guy said I shouldnt worry. Within 5mins I noticed he entered another car that just pulled in and took the woman's fluid! I asked him, he asked me whether I am a pastor's wife. The worse part was that he almost emptied her fluid in my car and took the rest inside his workshop. I felt so bad the whole evening knowing the man must have been doing this to me too!

It pays to have at least two spare parts vendors' contacts. Always call them and buy your parts from them. Do not allow your mechanic to buy parts for you at least till you know the kind of person he is. If he is not comfortable with you buying parts and he threatens fire and brimstone, have him go to your dealers by himself BUT don't give him money. Ask your dealer for quality assurance guarantees and have them deliver the parts to you if possible. If your dealer knows his business well, the mechanic cannot reject a good part when delivered to him. If he does, simply switch mechanics.

It pays to have tools and learn a little about your car. My mechanic knows that I am adventurous so he can't play pranks. I fix certain car issues myself. I have not even been to a rewire's shop for 3 years now, I have forgotten what they look like. grin

Some may ask you to change certain parts not because they want to fleece you off of some money, but because they have made wrong diagnosis unintentionally. This happens in almost every profession. Always try to stick around when your car is at the mechanic's. Always inspect retrieved parts and store them at home, you will be shocked at how many of them are still good. I have three very functional alternators at home. Watch him closely without making it obvious, it gives him room for slip ups as he thinks you are not paying full attention.

Recognize when they are trying to distract you. Take an inventory of your tools and fluids before leaving the mechanic's place.

Every once in a while, be a sport and let him have some victory. Give him some changed parts to sell and keep the money, pay him more than he has charged or simply don't haggle over the price sometimes. Just when he starts thinking you are an ATM, underpay him. Just learn the dynamics involved and remain unpredictable, and if he is reliable and honest to a certain degree, obtain his loyalty by involving his family every once in a while. Send him money for child's birthday or something of that nature and believe me, you will get a lot of special concessions and free jobs. He is also human too, you know, so stoke those emotions to your advatange.

But in all, limit your trust and never give the impression that you trust him fully, humans can fail at anytime.

I had a similar problem with my Honda civic which i sold off few months ago. The possible problem might be with ur coils. They have to be tested, and the one giving the problem replaced. In my case, all the mechanic did was to run a tape round the coils, and that solved the problem till i sold the car. Goodluck

my mechanic did something that got me upset last week so i thought i should share it with you all. i travelled to Abuja and while driving around the city, my car developed a fault. i took it to a nearby mechanic workshop where it got fixed. the bearing of my car was changed!...now here is the bombshell...when i got back to where i reside, lagos, i decided to take my car to my personal mechanic for servicing. i left the car at his workshop for a whole day. the next day when i came to get my car he told me my bearing(the same bearing i just bought) are worn out and needs to be replaced. i doubted it knowing i just changed it of recent, so i asked him to bring it so i could see for my self...lo and behold, it was a different bearing entirely he showed me. i know this cos i know the brand i bought in Abuja and it is definitely not it...so i just played along. i asked him how much a new one costs, he told me. i gave him the money but i also instructed him to let me see it before installing it. later, when i came back, he brought it to me. i checked it and discovered it was the same bearing i bought in Abuja. i asked him to bring the pack and nylon, he said he had disposed them....i laughed at his folly.he coupled my car and i left.
I don't think u acted wisely by laughing it off and creating a hole in ur pocket. I think u should have scolded him and make it clear to him dat he is a cheat. The advantage of that is dat he will not try it with another person and even if u go to him again will not try that pranks with u.

Well, as a life policy, I dont really trust anyone ....but my pastor/mechanic has actually proved himself.....the guy actually insists I go with him to the market when parts are needed Even though experienced, he knows the limits of his expertise and refers me whem necessary
lol,U never know this ppl.
Do U know they sometimes make an arrangement wt parts dealers to inflate the prices and they will only take U to d shops of d ppl who they have such a working relationship wt?
The most important thing is to be conversant wt Ur car,its parts and then independently source for d parts sometimes so U get to have a fair knowledge of d price ranges.

I told my mechanic last year that I was going to buy a 2003 corolla but the guy advised me against buying the ride. His reasons were that the car is not so strong coupled with the fact that the parts are expensive. Anyway I didn't listen to him as I went ahead and bought it having studied the car very well.
I have used the car for more that a year, going to two and now understands why mechanics will not advise you to buy it. Apart from normal servicing, I have never visited the mechanic for any other fault. The other day I saw my mechanic and he was lamenting that he has not seen me this year, 'abi you wan make hunger kill me' . Who is ever happy visiting a mechanic, doctor or police.
The miles per gallon of the corolla is very much okay and I must say that it is the best car I have ever used.
