Odd.
I don't believe Nigeria has the capacity to produce enough turkey/chicken to serve these festive season.
Besides, these are people's capital they poured down the drain.
Is there any mass turkey production farm in the country?

That's sure, there's no way Customs will make such seizure without some of those officers looting some cartons for their families, especially@this festive period, bunch of corrupt officers

My major problem with this "destruction" policy is the sheer wastage it represents. I mean, wouldn't it be better if they confiscated such products and distribute them to the various prisons across the country where we have starving inmates??
the waste is disgusting, prisons, orphanages, auction etc.

nigerians are just innately stubborn! I read a news here on nairaland where the federal government was warning against importing frozen chicken and turkey meat due to the outbreak of ebola across the globe.A lot of countries have taken stringent measures to curtail agricultural produce being imported into their land. But here, people are lambasting the government for doing their work! even though they said the meat might be dangerous to the public hence its destruction. you nigerians are like the proverbial isrealites in the wilderness, stubborn, headstrong and outright ungrateful..you want a government that works, but in the same vein attack them for doing the right thing. .twa!

Thanks! Frozen turkey is very injurious and hopelessly tasteless. They should now go from shops to shops, pack everything and take them to fish food production companies. Smh!

Do we have enough domestic production for consumption? We too do for out country as though no be imported Turkey dem dey serve for our government official quarters. Imagine how some business men/women capital is destroyed.

I like your reasoning , critical , realistic and the truth , Before confiscating & destroying imported items , do we have the capacity to produce ? A very wise man said a bird in hand is better than 20 on the fence , we can't produce enough Turkey for our own consumption but those who bring they destroy it ,after looting to their own shops that is...

Why won't Turkey be expensive , nothing wrong with buying for less than 3k in Nigeria , but those whose goods were burnt without insurance to pay will increase the price to recover losses

The same goes for rice , in Indonesia or is it China hardly would you see a swamp that isn't rice plantation , Nigeria does not have any rice processing plant , does not have world class plantation , despite the vast land we have , yet they ban import of rice

How many functioning /government supported textile factories do we have ? Yet they seize and burn textiles imported at loss to importers

Meanwhile Guns are getting to boko haram from Niger republic , and other African counties , immigration and customs don't apprehend them , is it because weapons are not consumables ?

Food for thought

Oh and somebody said chemicals and preservatives is why they banned importation of turkey. Let me ask you , Did any organization or institution carry out tests on the imports ? Was it a open test or the ones they conducted after envelopes changed hands ?

The dried fish and crayfish you buy do you know how they are preserved , Eja panla to stubborn , Yoruba/Oyo people get the picture I'm trying to paint here , the fish is mostly hard as rock , big sizes , bony , you go fear jaws of that fish . do you know how they were caught / preserved ?

Taritari or gamalin is usually used to catch those fishes in large quantities and they are sun dried , but Nafdac can't do anything about that can they ? Neither can federal government.

A country where not everyone has pure portable water at their disposal. People still drink from streams even in rural areas

A country where there's no public sewer , even that well water you are drinking is contagious , so what's all the fuss about Turkey ?

Cotonou sells what they consume in their country to Nigeria ,once they offload from ships they don't add more preservatives why ban or destroy the consignment

Food for thought

Is not healthy consuming cos of chemical preservatives, so sharing it hasn't prevented anything.

You Nigerians should be happy about this news. You have no idea of how or where these poultry products come from or are packaged, or how long they have been kept for. All some of you know is to chop turkey.

Why do you think that there is a sudden upsurge in organ failure among Nigerians? Like hunters say: it is not every meat that the trap catches that is meat.

Your point is taken....but Nigeria too has to be cautious that food being imported into the country is not substandard and unhealthy.

Can you please make reference to one death case recorded in Nigeria as a result of eating frozen turkey or chicken?

Its like the government want Nigerians to start eating turkey in their dream since its out of reach for most Nigerians due to the cost.

As old as i am i have only bought life turkey once and i can imagine how many people would be able to cough out 15/25k to buy just one life turkey even if i believe frozen chicken shoud be avoided since we can get cheap ones for 1k but for turkey i dont support the ban.

These countries exporting it here are not evil hence will never export any contaminated product but when you hear of spoilt ones been brought in what really happens is that customs must have seized them and maybe released them days after and because these traders will want to recoup their money will still bring them in.

The excuse of the bad preservation chemical you believe?
80% of the frozen turkey sold in Lagos are similar to the impounded and destroyed ones.
