Can't get what you wrote but let me try to explain what I've known or heard. My cousin is the child of my uncle or aunt. My children and the children of my cousins are second cousins to themselves. Meaning that I'm a second cousin to the children of my father's cousin.
What you've heard may not be the right thing. It doesnt sound right that ur children and your cousin's children are 2nd cousins and yet you re a 2nd cousin to your cousin's children. That will be put you and your children on the same generational level. That's why they add 'once removed' to it, to show u re one generation higher than ur cousin's children. But in naija sha, everyone who is not your blood bro/sis and not ur uncle/aunty is your ''cousin bro/sis''.

Well for once I just believe my understanding of english language is accidental since its our lingua franca. This thing could have been suitable to understand if they were typed in pidgin english cos oyinbo themselves are seriously confused.
