Gossip! Yes, gossip is universal. In some languages, it may have an outright negative connotation but in English, it basically means 'idle talk'

When moderate and kind, 'casual talk' may serve to exchange useful information as a means of updating ones knowledge.The whole neighborhood may grow gossipy with who got married, pregnant, died, robbed et al. However, idle talk more often than not, degenerates beyond the bounds of property and good taste. Facts gets embellished, exaggerated or deliberately distorted. Humiliation is made the source of humour, privacy is violated, confidences betrayed and reputations ruined. Murmuring and fault finding are extolled.

Gossip is everywhere, even in churches. I was talking with a friend, and he said something abt his former church, i was sad, how can people gossip in the house of God. He said there was this woman in his church (she was in the choir) the pastor was a young handsome man, just got married. One sunday the woman was talking with her friend. She said "this our pastor is young and handsome, i wish i had the Chance of sleeping with him before he got married".@ the end of the service, the friend went to another sister and said" sister A said she would love to sleep with our pastor". The other sister left and told someone else " sister A is sleeping with our pastorAnd before one could say 'jack' the news was everywhere.

Gossip is not inherently evil. There is a positive side to casual talk. Knowing where to draw the line between harmless and harmful gossip is the key to avoiding victimizing others and being a victim yourself.

Those spreading false rumor on nairaland. This is the time you stop. Let's make our society a better place.
