I was shocked last week when in a taxi taking me to Slaughter from Artillery. Knowing that the pseudo hold-up at Rumuobioakani Roundabout was caused by men from Mini-Okoro Police Station (my guess) was not pleasant when we discovered it. When the policeman got to us, he shamefully came to the side of the car, at the driver's side and said "oya!". The driver grudgingly gave him money. I sat in front and so I saw clearly how much he handed the crook. I waited for him to return a change, but he waved us on. We left without Taxi driver collecting his change. Thereafter, I queried him why he would leave his change for the thief and he said they pay N100 now. Wow! "Why you no give am N50?" I asked him. "If you pay N50, them go search your booth only. But if you no pay at all, them go park you" he explained. I shook my head, considering the fact that he was only conveying five passengers who paid him N50 each. It meant that he earned N250 and paid out N100 to police men, and N30 or so to the [i]agberos[i/]. That man would likely get to slaughter with only N120. It was appauling. It beats me how people manage to survive sometimes. The Nigerian police makes life more horrible for the citizenry, instead of assuaging their sufferings. Nigerian police 'Bribe collection' is responding to inflation. I wonder when this would stop, if at all it will ever. |

jumu:Lol! I hope you are not referring to my president. If yes, please leave him out. Blame the IG. On several occassions I've heard them announce that police should stop setting up roadblocks. But till date, such directive is only obeyed for fews day. |
